Work Text:

The furisode was green with a sharp pattern of yagasuri arrow feathers. It was a beautiful garment that her mother had chosen.

It was January 11th, Sayu had looked forward to this exact day for months, today was Coming of Age Day. It was a threshold into adulthood yet standing before the mirror she felt nothing but a strange feeling of emptiness. It had been barely a month since her father had passed away and the grief still tasted like ash in her mouth.

The memory came rushing back, a few hours after dad's death, two police officers had stood outside the front door. One of the officers held a sealed document.
"Soichiro Yagami died during a duty operation. We're sorry for your loss." The words fell like a lead, Sayu heard a deafening silence. That silence only lasted for an instant; behind her, mom stayed quiet for a few agonizing seconds before she started silently crying. Sayu didn't turn around back then. Her heart was too heavy and she simply didn't have the strength to look, she was still sitting in a wheelchair.
While her mother was weeping, the first officer continued to speak. He explained that her mother would receive a lump-sum compensation, 25,000,000 yen to be transferred upon final approval. While Sayu couldn't even see the officer's face, his voice remained painfully monotone.

"Sayu!"

Sayu instantly snapped back to earth and turned around, blinking against the brightness of the room. There she saw her mother with a smile on her face, standing by the doorway, holding the car keys. Her mother wanted only the best for her and Light, especially for Sayu after the trauma of her kidnapping. She knew how much her mother missed her husband. She missed him too. Sayu wasn't naive; her father had been the head of the Kira Task Force and she knew with absolute certainty that he had died during the investigation. Connecting the dots was agonizingly easy. Lost in thought once again, she followed her mother to the car in silence.
