Animorphs: The Quiet

Summary:

Animorphs 41, The Familiar, shows us an alternate future in which the Yeerks won. It briefly hints at what life is like for children on the conquered planet. We are told, in dialogue, of the host-farms of a Yeerk-controlled world:

"When children are born, they enter one of the wamps, or warehouses, where they are held from birth to age fifteen. Their lives are controlled though their brains are left uninfested. Children are seen as weak and unworthy host bodies. During this captivity, they're pumped full of vitamin supplements so the host bodies will grow strong. They're run on treadmills so they'll be fit to fight. When instinct leads them to indulge in moments of uncontrolled, regular childhood, they are punished. If they try to educate themselves, they are punished. Yeerks want minds as powerless as possible. So they raise children in a joyless, lifeless world where they wait for the day of infestation. The EF fights to free them."

Then the book looks away. I am not sure canon went far enough.

They burned the host-farm and saved eleven children. They seized a Yeerk data-drive, and on it, flagged as a model for the other farms: the complete assessment of a girl they were a rotation too late to save...

Work Text:

The drive is Yeerk-make, palm-sized, still warm from a console that is not warm anymore. Most of the wamp is not warm anymore. We did that.

Eleven kids walked out behind us into the dark and the cold and the enormous unroofed everything, and not one of them had a word for any of it, and we did not have time to teach them. We pointed them at the trees. That was all there was time for. Somewhere a younger Yeerk than the ones who built this place is already deciding what it costs the Empire to come and find us, and the answer will be: not much, and soon. Fine. Eleven. We saved eleven. That is still not none. Every mind matters. You do not get to keep a larger number than the one you earned, and we earned eleven, and I would do the doomed math again tomorrow for eleven, for one.

The drive is full of files. Compliance metrics. Vitamin schedules. Cohort yields, quarter over quarter, going back further than I want to think about.

And one assessment, flagged by the wamp's own administration as exemplary. Recommended for circulation. A model. They wanted the other wamps to read it and learn.

So I am going to read it. Somebody free should read it before the Empire does. Somebody who will be sorry.

She was in the cohort before the one we pulled out. We missed her by a rotation. By one turn of a wheel that does not care how close anyone came.

Here is what the Empire wanted the other wamps to learn from her.

Woke before the bell.

This is not permitted and is also not wrong, because the body that wakes early is the body that is Ready, and Readiness is the whole of the work. Lay still in the dark and did not move and counted the breathing of the row. Long-fingers, two down, breathes in fours. The one who hums does not hum when she sleeps, only after the bell, only when the treadmills start, low, where staff do not hear. Sister-on-the-left breathes against the back of Unit 1538-C's neck, has breathed there for twelve years, and the warm of it is —

There is no word. Leave it. The warm of it is the warm of it.

The bell.

Up, and onto the floor, which is cold the good way, the way that means morning, the way that means the day has a shape and the shape has already started. Feet in the line. Eyes down. The staff walk the rows with their faces that do not move, and a face that does not move is a face that has a Partner, is a face that has gone Quiet inside and let something steady take the holding of it, and one day — soon, soon, the number is small now — Unit 1538-C will have a face like that. Will not have to hold its own face up anymore. Something will hold it.

The number is small now. Forty-five days. Forty-five days is nothing. Forty-five days is a held breath.

To the treadmills.

The running is good. The running is the body becoming worth the giving. A weak body is a poor gift and Unit 1538-C will not be a poor gift, so the running is good, the burn in the legs is good, the staff who watch the speed-counts are not unkind exactly, they are correct, and correctness is a kind of care, the only kind that is real, the kind that does not waste itself on a body that is only going to be emptied of its weakness anyway. Ran. Ran. The number on the wall went up and that is the body getting better and the body getting better is the only thing the body is for.

The one who hums hummed.

Two rows over, low, under the belt-noise. She should not. Humming is the body indulging itself, is the body insisting on a sound that is only the body's own, with no use in it, and that is the kind of thing that is corrected, and it is right that it is corrected, because the body that hums is the body still clinging to its own small noise instead of going Quiet, instead of getting Ready, instead of becoming the kind of still clean vessel that a Partner can —

But the humming is.

No.

The humming is corrected. That is the end of the humming. Ran, and looked at the wall, and did not listen to the place two rows over where the humming had been and then was not, and felt the clean thing, the proud thing, the right thing, because the one who hums is loved and a loved thing should be corrected before its Day so it arrives clean. Unit 1538-C wants her clean. Unit 1538-C wants her Ready. That is what the wanting is for.

That is what the wanting is for.

Humming is small. Humming is corrected with a word and a small weight and it is over.

There are bigger things.

There was a day, not long ago, a body in the eating-place — one of the younger ones, too young to be Ready, too young to know better — who did a thing Unit 1538-C has no word for and will not reach for the word, because reaching for it is the start of the thing itself. The young body was given its food and it took the food and then it did not eat it. It made a tower of it. Stacked the hard bricks of it one on the next, careful, the small hands very careful, and when the tower fell the young body made a sound, and the sound was —

the sound was the worst sound, worse than humming, worse than the open sound, because the open sound is only want and this was not want, this was the body delighting, the body finding a thing good for no reason, good for nothing, good only to itself — and the delight spread. That is the danger of it, the thing the young one could not know: a row of bodies turned, and some of the small faces near it began to do the thing the young face was doing, the thing that is like the mouth opening only worse because there is gladness pushing it open from inside, and for one moment the eating-place was a room full of bodies catching the delight off each other the way the treadmills catch the heat, and Unit 1538-C felt it reach across the tables, felt it pull at the corners of the own mouth, the body wanting to join the spreading thing —

and the staff came.

Fast. Many of them, more than humming brings, because a spreading thing must be stopped at the spreading and not after. They took the young one. Not the way they take the Unready, quiet, in the night — they took it then, in the eating-place, in front of the rows, so the rows would see, and the taking was not gentle, and the young one made every wrong sound there is, the delight gone all to the other thing, and the rows watched, and the rows learned, and the room went still and clean again.

The young body came back, after. Days after. It eats its food now. It does not stack it. It does not make the sound. Its face is the right kind of still, the still that is almost the still of the Joined though it has no Partner yet, the still of a body that has had a thing taken out of it that will not grow back, and that is good, Unit 1538-C knows it is good, the young one is closer to Ready now than it ever was before, the danger swept out of it, the room safe. Unit 1538-C is glad for it. Unit 1538-C is glad the staff were fast. The delight had almost reached the own mouth, and the own mouth is forty-five days from its Day and must arrive clean, and a thing that spreads like that is a thing that could have followed Unit 1538-C all the way to the water, and the staff burned it out before it could, and that is care, that is the only care there is.

Did not finish reaching for the word. Let it go. There is no word for what the young one did. There is only the correction, and the correction worked, and the young one is better now.

Assessment note, appended: Cohort 41-C, Unit 1538-C. Conditioning integrity at forty-five-day mark: exemplary. Subject demonstrates spontaneous pre-bell waking, voluntary correction-affirmation, and unprompted peer-conditioning behaviors. No staff intervention required to produce these results. Recommend protocol unchanged. This host is performing above cohort baseline and may be used as a reference case.

Sister-on-the-left has slept against the back of Unit 1538-C's neck for twelve years.

This is not a thing Unit 1538-C chose. You do not choose the row. The row is the row, assigned, and the body sleeps where the body is put, and the body that has been put for twelve years in the same place wakes for twelve years to the same breathing at the same place on its neck, in fours and then slower, slower toward morning. That is all it is. A fact of the row. The warm of her there is a fact of the row.

But.

There is a but and the but is not permitted and Unit 1538-C does not look at it directly, the way you do not look at the wet bright pieces directly. The but is this: when the loud dark is worst, in the seconds after waking before the day takes its shape, when the Noise is up and churning and there is no Partner yet, not yet, forty-four more days, the breathing on the neck is the thing. The breathing on the neck is the thing that the churning quiets toward. Not the Quiet — the Quiet is the Partner, the Quiet is coming, the Quiet is the real and only thing — but a small near-quiet, a poor wamp-made quiet, the warm of her breathing in fours, and the churning goes toward it the way the body goes toward the cold-good floor in the morning. Toward the shape. Toward the thing that has a shape.

Unit 1538-C does not have a word for what sister-on-the-left is. There is no descriptor that fits. The one who hums hums; long-fingers has the fingers; sister-on-the-left is only where she is, the left, the neck, the twelve years — a place, not a person, a direction the warm comes from. And that is correct. That is right. She does not need a word. A word would be —

Leave it.

Last night, in the loud dark, sister-on-the-left turned. Turned over, which she does not do, which breaks the twelve years of fours-against-the-neck, and her face came near in the dark, and her breath was not in fours, it was quick, it was wrong, it was the breath of a body with the Noise full up in it, and she said — so low, lower than the one who hums hums, low enough that only the neck it was aimed at could catch it —

Do you ever want —

And stopped.

There was no end to it. The sentence had no end in it. There was do you ever want and then the held wrong breathing and nothing, no object, no thing-wanted, because there is no permitted thing to want and so the wanting had nowhere to go, it just came up out of her like water and stood there in the dark with no shape, want, bare, the engine in full malfunction, the loudest Noise there is wearing the shape of a question and aimed at Unit 1538-C's neck.

And Unit 1538-C —

Here is the thing Unit 1538-C did. Here is the correct thing, the loving thing, the only thing.

Did not turn. Did not give the face back. Kept the neck still and the breathing in fours, slow, a model of fours, be like this, breathe like this, come back to the shape — and said nothing, because there is nothing to say to want, there is only the correction, and the correction is not words, the correction is be Ready beside her so she remembers how. Lay there and was Ready, hard, with the whole body, the way you would hold a lamp up in a dark place so someone lost could see the walls. Held the Readiness up. You are not alone in the loud dark. I am here being Ready. Be Ready with me. Your Partner is coming, forty-four days, hold on, do not let the Noise have you this close to the Day, do not arrive impure, I want you clean, I want you Held, I want —

— the right things. Wanted the right things. That is the difference and Unit 1538-C knows the difference.

After a while the wrong breathing slowed. Went back toward fours. Sister-on-the-left turned again, away, the neck got its place back, the warm came back to where the warm goes. And Unit 1538-C lay in the dark holding the Readiness up until the bell, proud, and frightened, and proud, the chest tight and full both at once and the difference between them very hard to find, and found it, found it, by the story: this is Readiness. This is love. This is a loved thing being helped toward her Day.

Did not sleep again. Did not need to. Held the lamp up.

Sister-on-the-left was not at the bell four mornings later.

The row was the row. The bodies came up onto the cold-good floor in their places and there was a place with no body coming up out of it, on the left, where the neck's warm comes from, and the place was only floor.

The words sister-on-the-left had said were loud enough for the security recordings to hear.

The Unready are taken to try again. This is known. This is one of the gathered bright things, turned and turned: a body that is not Ready by its Day is not wasted, is not lost, is taken somewhere — somewhere kind, somewhere patient — and given more time, more days, another chance to come clean and Ready and worthy of the gift. So she is somewhere being given more time. So she is held, still, somewhere, by patient hands, getting Ready. That is what the empty place on the left means. It means sister-on-the-left was not Ready and is being helped, the way Unit 1538-C tried to help her, only better, by hands that do it correctly.

That is what it means.

Unit 1538-C lay that night in the loud dark with the churning full up and no fours on the neck, no warm where the warm goes, just the cold edge of the row and the enormous loud nothing, and the chest was tight, only tight, not full, tight all the way through, and something in the body wanted to make the open sound, the worst sound, the I want, give her back, the warm goes there, give it back — and Unit 1538-C corrected it. Corrected it fully. Held the Readiness up in the empty dark for no one, for the empty place, until the tight went quiet.

The grief is not for the taking. There is no taking. The grief — and it is not even grief, grief is a Noise-word, it is concern, it is correct concern — the concern is that sister-on-the-left was not Ready. That she let the want come up so close to her Day. That she turned over, and broke the fours, and aimed the bare wanting at a neck instead of holding it down and being Ready. Unit 1538-C is concerned for her. Unit 1538-C hopes the patient hands are kind. Unit 1538-C hopes she comes clean, and Ready, and gets her Day after all, and is Held somewhere, soon.

Forty days.

The place on the left stayed floor. A smaller body was moved into it the next week, too young yet to breathe in fours, and Unit 1538-C did not learn where the warm came from now. Did not turn to find out. Faced the dark the other way.

That was correct.

Assessment note, appended: Unit 1541-C (adjacent, internal-row designation unrecovered) removed at day-mark forty per standard non-viability protocol following flagged aberrant ideation. Routine. Of note: subject 1538-C registered no behavioral disruption, maintained schedule, and self-managed the resulting affective spike without staff intervention, reframing the removal in alignment with conditioning. Attachment of this duration (twelve years, co-assigned) typically requires post-removal correction in the surviving vessel. None was required here. Subject's capacity to metabolize loss into reinforcement is the single most valuable trait observed in this cohort. Strongly recommend subject's developmental profile be studied for reproducibility.

Subject (Unit 1538-C) observed to have formed unauthorized affective bond with adjacent co-assigned vessel, internal-row designation 1541-C (host-internal referent "sister-on-the-left," recovered post-integration). Cf. Subjects 1156-A, 1162-A, for comparable dyads flagged this quarter. Note for the record that the affective material itself — the specific forms the attachment took, its expression, its persistence under correction — is of high program value and is being catalogued accordingly. The attachment this vessel formed is the clearest map yet obtained of how such attachments form; it is therefore the clearest map of how to prevent them. Recommend that sleeping assignments be randomized quarterly across all cohorts to disrupt pair-bonding before it consolidates.

There is a word and the word is Noise.

The staff say it flat. They do not say it loud. It is not a loud word, which is strange, because of everything it names, and what it names is loud. They say it the way they say line or count or eat, one syllable, no weight on it, and then the correction comes, and the correction has weight, and so the word learns weight from the correction and after enough years the word does not need the correction anymore. The word does the correction by itself, inside, before a staff mouth ever has to make it. That is what Readiness is, partly. The word doing its own work, in the dark, where staff cannot reach. Unit 1538-C corrects faster than staff. This has been counted. This is a small number Unit 1538-C is permitted to be proud of, and the pride is —

The pride is not Noise. Pride at correctness is the engine running clean. It is the difference that matters and Unit 1538-C knows the difference, knows it in the body, knows it the way you know cold from warm.

Here is the difference.

There was a time before, very small, before the difference was known. Cannot remember it as a story. Remembers it as a few wet bright pieces, like the things the eye keeps after the lights go down, the floating after-shapes that are not in the room and will not be looked at directly.

Reached up once. Arms up. To a staff. The arms went up by themselves, the body did it, the small body wanted — wanted, the want came up like water, came up out of nothing, out of the machine of the body which makes wanting the way the legs make running, with no one driving it — and the want had a shape and the shape was be held, was come down to the small body and take it up and hold it, and the arms were up and the mouth was making the open sound that small bodies make, the sound that is all want and no word —

Noise.

The staff said it flat. And the correction came. And the arms came down.

That is the first piece. There are others. A time the small body would not stop the open sound and the open sound went on and on and got louder, which is the worst thing, the body insisting, the body throwing its whole self up out of itself in a great wet refusal, I want, I want, give me, hold me, I, I, I — and that is Noise at its loudest, that is the engine in full malfunction, that is the unaccompanied human machine doing the only thing it knows how to do when no steady hand is on it, which is to suffer, and to make the suffering into sound, and to demand. The small body did that. Was corrected. Was corrected fully. Does not do that anymore. Has not done that in years. Is grateful.

Because now the difference is known, and the difference is everything, and the difference is this:

The body makes Noise the way a wound makes hurting. Not on purpose. Not because anyone wills it. It is simply what the unaccompanied human mind is — a thing that churns, that throws up grief out of nothing and fear out of nothing and the terrible reaching want out of nothing, on and on, with no one to still it, a machine running with no driver, generating suffering as its only product because suffering is what a self alone makes. The self is the Noise. The self is the malfunction. The illusion that there is an I in here, separate, important, owed things — that illusion is the loudest Noise of all, and everything bad comes out of it, all the wanting and the grieving and, the staff say, in the old free times before, the violence. The free humans were all Noise, all the time, every one of them a machine running driverless and screaming, and they did to each other what driverless screaming machines do.

And there is one thing that stops it.

One.

A Partner takes the wheel. A Partner is the steady hand the human machine was never given, the driver the body has been running without for fifteen years, churning and suffering the whole time because that is all it can do alone. When the Partner comes, the Noise stops. Not muffled. Not managed. Stopped, because there will be no unaccompanied self left to generate it. You cannot suffer if there is no alone-you to do the suffering. You cannot want if there is someone steady deciding what is wanted. You cannot grieve. You cannot fear. The engine, finally, has a driver, and a driven engine does not scream.

That is the Quiet.

That is what the Quiet is.

And the worst of it, the thing that makes the chest go tight with how true it is — Unit 1538-C has checked. Has tested the doctrine against the only evidence there is, which is the inside of Unit 1538-C, and the doctrine holds. The inside is loud. The inside is frightened, all the time, under everything, a low churn of want and dread that never fully stops, that is worst at night, that is worst in the seconds after waking before the day takes its shape. The Noise is real. No one had to lie about it. It is in there, right now, churning, and it will churn until the Day, and then a steady hand will close over it and it will stop, and Unit 1538-C will never have to be alone in the loud dark again.

The inside is the only evidence there is because the inside is the only thing Unit 1538-C is allowed to look at. There is a kind of Noise that is the worst of all the kinds and it does not feel like dread or want, it feels bright, it feels like reaching — the wanting-to-know. The wanting to take a thing apart and see how it is made, the wanting to ask, the wanting to follow a fragment back to where it came from. This is the Noise the staff watch for hardest, harder than humming, harder than the open sound. There was a body once who taught itself the marks on the crates — the marks that the staff read, that mean things, that open the world — taught itself in the dark, a little at a time, reaching, and when it was found out the correction was not small and the body was not the same after. Wanting-to-know is the loudest reaching there is, the unaccompanied mind grasping after a world it has no business grasping at, a world that is the Partner's to hold and not the body's, and a body that reaches like that is a body still trying to drive itself, still refusing the hand. After, the doctrine says — and Unit 1538-C says it too, says it to the brightness whenever the brightness comes up — after. Knowing is for after. The Partner will know, and so you will be near the knowing, and that is enough, that is more than enough, that is all the knowing a body could want. Do not reach now. Reaching now is Noise. Be still. Be Ready. Let the wanting-to-know lie down.

And so Unit 1538-C does not reach. When a fragment drifts past — a word off the staff's low talk, a thing the Joined let fall in a Visit — Unit 1538-C does not chase it back to where it came from, does not pull on it, does not ask. Takes it as it is. Holds it in the dark and turns it and lets the rest of it stay dark. The brightness wants to chase. The brightness is corrected. That is why the gathered things are only fragments, only scraps, only the bright edges of things with the whole of them left unknown — because to want the whole of them is the worst Noise of all, and Unit 1538-C is good, Unit 1538-C is Ready, Unit 1538-C lets the wanting-to-know lie down.

Thirty days.

The number is a held breath. The number is almost nothing.

The chest goes tight. That is not Noise. That is Readiness, which feels, sometimes, almost exactly like the thing it is curing, and the difference between them is the difference that matters, and Unit 1538-C knows the difference.

Knows it.

Corrects faster than staff.

Assessment note, appended: Subject's internalization of corrective vocabulary is total and self-sustaining. Of particular interest: subject has independently elaborated the operational correction-term into a comprehensive interpretive framework governing self-perception. This is not trained. No protocol instructs it. It appears to be a spontaneous product of human cognition under sustained conditioning, and it produces compliance more durable than any trained response, at no cost to the wamp. Recommend study. If this elaboration can be reliably induced rather than left to chance, projected gains across all cohorts are substantial.

Here is the most beautiful thing Unit 1538-C knows.

It was not taught. The beautiful things are never taught; the staff do not have beautiful things to give, the staff have line and count and eat and Noise, and that is correct, that is enough, the staff are not for beauty. The beautiful things come sideways, in pieces, off the edges of what the Joined say when they Visit, off the low talk of staff who think the rows are sleeping. You gather them. You hold them in the dark and turn them and they get brighter from the turning. This one is the brightest. This one Unit 1538-C has turned and turned for years.

And there is a word the gathered things all live near, the brightest of them — and the word is: Held.

To be Held is the thing. To be Held is when the Partner comes — comes into the head and closes around it, steady, all the way around, the way a hand closes around something small and cold and shaking and stills it. That is the Quiet. That is the end of the loud dark. A Held head does not churn, cannot churn, because the churning was only ever the body running with no hand on it, and now there is a hand, all the way around, and the hand is the Partner, and the Partner is steady, and the Noise stops. Not for a while. Not until you slip. Stops. Because to be Held is to have, at last, the driver the body was never given — and a driven thing does not scream.

The Joined are Held. You can see they are Held. Adrash-576 stood in the Counting-hall last season and spoke, and her face did not move the way an un-Held face cannot help but move, twitching with its own churning, and her voice was so even, so unhurried, the voice of a head with a hand all the way around it, a head that is never for one moment alone with itself. That is what Held looks like, Unit 1538-C understood. That is what it is to never have to hold your own head up again.

And there is more that the Held are given. This is the other gathering, and it comes the same way the word Held comes — off the Visits.

The Joined come back to Visit.

Not often. A few times a season, in the Counting-hall, the Joined who were once in the rows — older now, given over now, Held — come back and stand before the cohorts and are looked at. That is the whole of a Visit: the rows look, and the Joined are looked at, and the looking is the lesson. Unit 1538-C has looked, every Visit, for fifteen years, and gathered.

Here is what the Joined have that the rows do not.

They have something the un-Joined Units cannot hold. This is the first thing and the hugest and Unit 1538-C has no floor under it. The wamp is the wamp — the floor and the wall and the cloth on the bodies are all the one even no-difference, lighter and darker and never anything else, and Unit 1538-C did not know there was an else, did not know a surface could be different from another surface in a way that was not lighter and was not darker, did not know there was a direction to be different in that the eye had never once been asked to go. And the Joined came back, and the cloth at one Joined's throat went in that direction. Went the way there is no way to go. The eye found it and the eye did not know what it had found, because the eye had no — there is no word, the wamp gave Unit 1538-C no word, because the wamp gave Unit 1538-C no thing, kept the thing out of the world so the word could never grow — the eye found a difference that was not light and was not dark and was not warm and was not near, a difference with no axis under it, a whole new manner of one-thing-not-being-another-thing, arriving all at once at a throat two rows up, and the chest did something close to the open sound, a reaching of the entire eye, a wanting with no hunger in it and no warm in it, a wanting toward a difference Unit 1538-C had not known the world contained.

And Unit 1538-C understood the doctrine then, understood it in the eye. Your human eyes are too weak to see the beauty of the Empire. Unit 1538-C had heard it flat and turned it and not understood it, and now the throat-cloth explained it: the wamp is even and the wamp is the one-difference-only because the alone eye, the un-Held eye, is too poor a thing to be given the other directions. They are too much for it. Unit 1538-C's own eye proved it — the eye had touched only the edge of one of them, one throat, one moment, and already the eye was reaching and the chest was close to the open sound and Unit 1538-C had to correct it, correct a wanting toward a difference, which is the strangest correction Unit 1538-C has ever made, and Unit 1538-C made it. If one edge of one of them did that, then a world made all of them, every surface gone in every direction at once, would be a flood no alone body could stand in. It would be all Noise. The eye and the mind would break on it.

And it is not only the directions of the eye. The Joined have smell. They come back smelling of things — of the outside, of a hundred outsides, sharp fresh things and warm sweet things and things Unit 1538-C has no words for and gathers anyway, holds in the dark and cannot place, because the wamp smells of the wamp and nothing else, of the bodies and the flat clean nothing the staff keep, and the Joined walk in trailing the whole world behind them like cloth. And they have texture. Unit 1538-C saw a Joined once whose sleeve, in passing, near the front of the rows, was a thing with a nap to it, a thing that would be soft under the hand, soft, and Unit 1538-C's hand — the bad reaching hand, the hand that went up once — wanted to touch it, and Unit 1538-C corrected the hand, and the wanting stayed.

Because that is the lesson of the Visit, and Unit 1538-C has learned it well: the directions, and the smells, and the softness are real, and they are not here, and they are not for the alone body. They are for the Held. They are the world the strong driven eye is given, and the weak alone eye is kept from, and the keeping-from is not cruelty, Unit 1538-C knows it is not cruelty, it is only true — the human body is too weak, Unit 1538-C can feel that it is too weak, the eye waters and reaches at the edge of a single direction and could not bear a world made all of them, would break on it, would make Noise of it. So the world is kept behind the door until there is a hand strong enough to open the eye onto it. The wamp is the one-difference-only so that the body learns what that is, so that the rest of it, when it comes, when the Partner comes and the doors open, will be the whole of everything arriving at once. Only when you are Held will the doors open. Only then will you see the sky. Unit 1538-C wants it. Wants it past wanting. Wants the eye made strong and the door opened onto the world that goes in all the ways the wamp does not go, the unbearable everywhere of it that Unit 1538-C cannot picture and reaches toward anyway, the way you reach toward the dark you were told has lights in it.

Twenty days. Twenty days and then a hand, all the way around, forever.

Except —

Not quite forever-without-pause. This is the other gathered thing, the harder one, the one Unit 1538-C had to turn many times before it stopped frightening and started to comfort. The Partner cannot stay in the head every moment of every day. The Partner has its own need — the water, the deep shared water where the Partners go to be among the others and come back renewed — and so, sometimes, the Partner must go to the water and be, for a little while, not in the head.

And when the Partner is at the water, the head is not Held.

It is Kept.

This is the word for it. Not Held — Kept. When the Partner goes to the water the body is set down, carefully, the way you would set down something you mean to lift again, something you would never leave, only set down for a moment with your eye still on it. The body is Kept. Safe. Belonging. Waiting. The Partner is at the water and the body is Kept and soon — soon, always soon, never long — the Partner comes back and lifts the head again and closes around it again and the Held resumes. Kept is the pause inside the Held. Kept is the held breath between two Held breaths. Kept is not alone, because a Kept thing is not alone — a Kept thing is being kept, by someone, for someone, set down in trust and watched over and certain, certain, of being lifted.

Unit 1538-C does not fear the Kept. The Noise might try to make you fear it — might try, in the loud dark, to whisper that the Kept is just the loud dark again, just the body alone with its churning, just the old un-Held nothing wearing a kinder word. But that is a lie the Noise tells, and Unit 1538-C knows it is a lie, because the Kept is not the old nothing. The old nothing is a body that has never been Held and does not know it ever will be. The Kept is a body that has been Held, and will be Held again, and is only waiting. The waiting is full of the Held on both ends. The waiting belongs to the Held. The waiting is for the Held. And so even the Kept is a kind of good, the way the breath you let out is part of breathing, the way the dark between the Partner's leaving and the Partner's returning is not empty dark but expecting dark, dark with the Held coming back into it any moment, soon, soon.

To be Held. And between the Helds, to be Kept.

That is the whole shape of the life that is coming, and there is no part of it that is the loud alone dark, not one part, not ever again. Held, then Kept, then Held, then Kept, world without the Noise, a hand all the way around forever with only the smallest soft pauses in it, and in the pauses, the certainty of the hand returning.

Unit 1538-C wants that. Wants it so hard the chest goes full — full, the good way, not tight — wants the hand all the way around, wants even the Kept, wants the waiting that is not alone because it is waiting for something, belongs to something, is Kept by something.

Twenty days.

The number is a held breath. The number is almost nothing.

Soon. Soon.

Assessment note, appended: Subject has independently generated favorable interpretive vocabulary for both infested and non-infested states, including a positively-valenced framework for the Yeerk-absence interval ("Kept"). Standard conditioning produces compliant acceptance of the interval; subject instead anticipates it as a continuation of the bonded state. This is anomalous and highly desirable. Note that subject has no accurate understanding of host experiential status during the feeding interval; the gap is not corrected, as the misapprehension is strongly favorable to outcomes. The number yesterday was one.

There is no number after one. After one there is the Day, which is not a number, which is the thing all the numbers were counting down to, the floor under the last step.

Unit 1538-C woke before the bell on the morning of the Day and lay in the dark and did not count the breathing of the row, because there was nothing left to count toward in the breathing of the row. Counted the other thing instead. The thing without a number. Today. Today. Today.

Here is what Unit 1538-C is, today. Unit 1538-C is a host.

This is the word. This is the best of all the gathered words, better than Held, better than Kept, the word they all live inside. Unit 1538-C caught it years ago — staff, two of them, low over the rows in the dark, thinking the rows asleep, and one said to the other, flat, the way they say everything, the host is prepared, and moved on to some other low flat thing. The host is prepared. Unit 1538-C did not sleep the rest of that night. Turned it and turned it. The host. Said with such — not warmth, the staff do not have warmth, but weight, the weight of a true thing, a thing everyone present was meant to already know and honor. The host. And Unit 1538-C did not know, and so Unit 1538-C had to build the knowing, year on year, out of the word and the weight and nothing else.

This is what a host is. Unit 1538-C is sure of it now, sure the way you are sure of the cold-good floor.

A host is the one who welcomes. A host is the one who makes the room ready and opens the door and is honored — that is the thing, the honor of it — honored that the guest would come at all, would choose this room, this door, this prepared and waiting place. A host is not empty. The Noise wants you to think an un-Held head is empty, is nothing, is only the loud dark waiting to be filled. But a host is not empty. A host is ready. A house standing clean and still and laid for the arrival, every Noise swept out of it, every want folded down and put away, the floor of it cool and waiting, the door of it open — that is not emptiness. That is hospitality. That is a house that has made itself worthy to be lived in.

And that is what the fifteen years were. Unit 1538-C understands it now, today, on the morning of one, understands the whole shape of the life at last. The treadmills were not punishment and were not only the body becoming worth the giving. The treadmills were housekeeping. The corrections were housekeeping. The long sweeping-out of want, the folding-down of the open sound, the holding of the Readiness up like a lamp in the dark — all of it, all fifteen years of it, was a house preparing itself for a guest. Cleaning the room. Stilling the room. Making a place where someone steady could come and dwell and never be troubled by Noise, because the host had swept it all away beforehand, out of love, out of the honor of being chosen to host at all.

Today the guest comes.

Today Unit 1538-C opens the door.

The chest is so full it is hard to lie still. Full and tight both, the two things that feel the same, and Unit 1538-C sorts them by the story the way you always sort them, and the story today is enormous, the story today has no number left in it: a guest is coming to a house that spent its whole life getting ready, and the house gets to host at last, gets to be lived in, gets to never stand empty in the loud dark again. That is the story. That sorts it. The fullness is the right kind. The tightness underneath it is only Readiness, only the body at its last and highest pitch of Readiness, and Readiness feels like fear the way the host's swept-clean stillness might feel, to a frightened house, almost like being empty — but it is not empty and it is not fear, it is Ready, and Unit 1538-C knows the difference.

Knows the difference.

Corrects faster than staff.

They come for the host after the bell.

Not to the treadmills, today. A staff at the end of the row, and a hand-sign, the sign that means come, and Unit 1538-C rises out of the place in the row and the place is only floor behind, the way sister-on-the-left's place was only floor, and that is correct, that is right, a host does not stay in the row when the guest has come. Walks where the staff walks. Eyes down. The body very still inside, swept, ready, the lamp of Readiness held high and steady.

The wamp is large. Unit 1538-C has never known how large. The known places — the row, the treadmills, the Counting-hall, the eating-place — are stitched together in the body's map by the short walks between them, and the body has walked those short walks ten thousand times and knows them in the dark. This is not those walks. This walk goes past the known places and keeps going, into the part of the map that was never walked, that was only ever toward — the deep part, the part everything in the wamp faces the way the rows face the dark, the part with the pull in it.

And Unit 1538-C understands, walking, that the whole wamp has always been shaped like this walk. That every place in it was bent toward this one direction, this one deepening corridor, the way the body bends toward the cold-good floor at morning. The treadmills faced this way. The rows slept pointed at this. The Counting counted toward it. Fifteen years of the body living inside a shape, and the shape was an arrow, and the arrow pointed here, and Unit 1538-C is walking up the arrow now, toward the one place in all the world the body has never been.

The corridor goes down.

There is a door at the end of it, and the door is open, and past the door there is a different light — not the wamp's flat even light, a wetter light, a moving light, light that comes up off of something and shifts — and a smell Unit 1538-C has no word for, mineral and close and warm, the smell of the deep part, the smell of the place with the pull.

The host has reached the door.

The host stops at the threshold, because the staff's hand says stop, and stands at the edge of the one room never entered, the room at the bottom of the arrow, the room the whole life pointed at — and looks, for the first time, into the place where the guest is waiting.

Assessment note, appended: Subject processed to integration on schedule, day-mark zero. Pre-integration conditioning markers optimal across all indices. Subject's interpretive framework ("host," welcoming-valence) is noted as a particularly efficient variant; subject approached integration not as submission but as the fulfillment of a hospitality the subject believed itself to have spent its life preparing. No resistance anticipated. Proceeding.

The room is small.

This is the first surprise, and Unit 1538-C did not know there would be surprises, did not know the body still had room in it to be surprised, today of all days, but there it is: the room is small. The whole life pointed at it and it is small, smaller than the Counting-hall, smaller than the eating-place, a low close room with the wet light moving on the walls and the warm mineral smell thick in it, and in the middle of the floor, sunk into the floor, the pool.

The pool is not large either. It is dark and it is still and it is the size of — of nothing, of a thing you could lie down beside, and the wet light is its light, comes up off its surface and moves on the low ceiling, and the surface is so still that the moving light is the only thing that says it is water and not stone. The deep part. The place with the pull. It does not look like the most important thing in the world. It looks like a dark still small water in a low warm room, and that is the second surprise, that the most important thing in the world looks like so little, and Unit 1538-C understands, dimly, that this is right, that the important thing was never going to be the water, the important thing is what comes out of the water, the guest, and the guest does not need a large room.

There are two staff. They do not come close. One stands by the door that is now behind, and one stands across the pool, and neither of them moves toward the host, and there is nothing in the room that is for holding a body — no harness, no chair set with anything on its arms, no straps, nothing of that kind, and Unit 1538-C would not know to look for such things anyway, would not know that bodies were ever restrained, that there was ever a time and a kind of body that had to be restrained. There is no restraining here. There is only the host, and the pool, and the two who watch, and the wet light, and the smell.

The staff across the pool makes the hand-sign. Not come. A different one. Down.

And the host kneels.

The body does it. The knees find the floor at the edge of the pool and the floor is wet here, and warm, and the warmth comes up through the body the way warmth has never come up through the body, because the wamp floor is cold-good and this floor is warm-good and the difference is enormous, is a whole new thing the body did not know floors could do, and the host kneels into the warmth at the edge of the still dark water and is so full, so full, the chest a single held thing, and there is no tightness now, or if there is tightness the story has swallowed it whole, the story is everything now: the guest. The guest is here. The door is open. Host.

Lean down. No hand makes the host lean down. The host leans down, toward the water, toward the wet light, the way you lean toward a thing you have waited for, the face going down toward the still dark surface where the guest is, where the guest waits, where in a moment the guest will —

The water is very close now. The smell is everything. The face is near enough to the surface that the breath of the body troubles it, the still dark going into small rings and out again, and the warmth of it is on the skin of the face, and somewhere under the surface, near, rising —

— and for one part of one moment the body knows.

Not the mind. The body. Some old part under all the years, the part that made the arms go up once, the part that made the open sound, the part the corrections went down and down to reach and maybe never entirely reached — that part feels the face going toward the water and the something rising to meet it and it knows, the way a hand knows the stove before the mind says hot, it knows this is the edge, this is the place where I

I

— and there is the word, bare, no place to put it, no breath behind it, the one word the wamp could never quite dig out because it was under everything, holding everything up, the word the whole life was built to keep from ever being spoken, and it is here now, at the edge of the water, surfacing the way the guest is surfacing, I, I do not —

And the host corrects it.

Reflex. Faster than thought, faster than staff, the way the body corrects the open sound before it can finish — the will closes over the bare word and stills it, and the word is gone, and the host did not even have to reach for it. There was no staff to do it. There was no hand on the head. Only the host, in the space between the water and her face, doing the small quick thing the host has done ten thousand times.

Unit 1538-C is Ready.

Unit 1538-C is the host. The guest is here. The door is open. The guest is welcomed.

[Assessment note, appended: A minor transient was recorded at the water's edge, prior to contact, and self-suppressed by the host before this Yeerk had touched the brain at all. Noted only as the first of two, and the smaller. The second is the one that matters.]

The face goes down. The ear touches the water. The water is warm.

And something touches the ear.

It does not hurt. They never said whether it would hurt and the host never asked, asking is Noise, but it does not hurt, there is only a pressure and then a coolness moving and then a fullness, a fullness that is not the chest's fullness, a fullness inside, behind the ear and then deeper, a slow cool certain entering, and the host kneels at the warm edge with the face in the warm water and lets it happen, lets the guest in, is the open door the guest comes through, and thinks, with everything that is left, with the whole swept-clean readied house of the self: Welcome. Welcome. You are welcome here. This host has made the room ready. Come in.

And the guest comes in.

And the world arrives.

All of it. At once. The way the light must arrive to an eye that has been closed since birth and is opened — not a thing learned but a thing flooded, the whole shape of everything pouring in through the place where the guest touched, because the touching goes both ways, the guest reads the host and the host, the host reads the guest, and the guest is full, the guest is full of the world.

The host knows the water now. Not the deep part, not the place with the pull — the host knows its name, the real name, the flat true Yeerk name for it, and the name for the great water it is only a small finger of, far away, on a world the host can suddenly see, the home world, the actual one, with its actual name. The host knows the Joined are called Controllers. The host knows the staff are Controllers and the bell-world is a wamp is a farm, knows the word farm now and knows it is the right word, knows what is farmed. The host knows there is an Empire and knows its shape, knows it is not the holy contiguous region the host had built from scraps but a vast cold working thing, a logistics, a spread of conquered worlds administered by tired functionaries filing reports, knows the guest itself is one such functionary, with a designation and a pool-rank and an assignment and a quiet worry about its own standing — knows the guest the way the guest knows the host, enough, not all, but enough. The something larger that the host is being given up into: the host can see it now, plainly, all of it, and it is not larger the way the host imagined larger. It is just bigger. It is an occupation. It is a business of bodies.

And the host knows the words now. The guest's words. The flat true cold words for every bright thing the host gathered and turned in the dark for fifteen years. Guest — the host knows now the guest is a Yeerk. Edrek Four-Three-Five. Held — the guest has a word for Held and the guest's word is infestation, is acquisition, is the host filed and driven and managed. Kept — oh, the host knows what the Kept is now, knows it from inside the guest's own flat knowing of it: when the guest goes to the water the host will be alone. Awake. Conscious in the dark with no hand on the head, exactly as the Noise once whispered and the host called the whisper a lie. It was not a lie. The host knows it now, fully, the way the guest knows it, as an operational fact: host experiential status during Yeerk-absence: conscious, unaccompanied. The truth the wamp kept from the host arrives complete in the one moment it can change nothing.

And the host knows the directions now. The forbidden ways the eye could not go — the host has the word for them, the guest's flat word, color, and the word for the one at the Controller's throat that made the whole eye reach, the word is red, that is all it is, a small flat sound the guest has carried its whole life and spent without thinking, red, and the host had built a cathedral on the lack of it. The host knows now there was never any weakness in the eye. The eye was always strong enough. The wamp was grey because the wamp was painted grey, kept grey, the directions swept out of the world the way the Noise was swept out of the host, on purpose, so that the host would hand the eye over to the door that promised to give it back. There was no door the body could not have walked through on its own legs into a world already full of red, except the door built in the host's own mind. There were only walls, and a story about weakness, and fifteen years.

And the host knows about sister-on-the-left.

Knows there were no patient hands. Knows there was no somewhere kind. Knows the word non-viable and the word removed and what they mean, knows it flat and entire, that the empty place on the left was an edge like this edge only no guest ever rose to meet the face that bent toward it, that sister-on-the-left ended, simply, was ended, and is nowhere, and was never being given more time.

The host holds all of this.

And here is the thing the host does with it, in the warm water, in the half-second the flood takes to become known: the host translates. The guest's flat cold words arrive and the host lays them down beside her own and keeps her own. The guest's word for the water is true and the host's word is truer — the host pities the guest its flat word a little, the way the wamp pitied the unaccompanied mind, because the deep part holds more than the cold name does, and Held holds more than infestation. And then — this is the surprise, the thing the flood turns up that the host did not see coming — the host finds her own best word already there in the guest. The same word. Not a colder word beside it: the very same word, host, the word the staff said low over the rows in the dark, the host is prepared, the word the host caught one sleepless night and turned and turned and built a whole welcome out of across fifteen years. It is the guest's word too, exactly, the same four sounds — and the host can feel, now, from inside the guest's own knowing, what the word carries on the guest's side of it. Not welcome. The guest thinks host and feels vessel. Feels body, feels the thing that is driven, feels the unit processed and filed. The same word the host fills with an opened door, the guest fills with a stone.

And the host does not correct hers to match. Does not have to. The word is wide enough for both, the host sees — wide enough that the host can be, in the same warm moment, both things the one word means: the vessel being processed, yes, truly, that is happening, the host can feel the processing and does not flinch from it; and the welcomer who threw the door, also truly, also happening, the two meanings folded into one act the host performs gladly, the being-taken and the giving-welcome the same motion seen from the two sides of a single word. The host is a host in both the guest's sense and her own, at once, and embraces both, and pities the guest only this: that the guest, holding the same beautiful word, can feel just the stone in it, and never once the door. The guest has carried this word its whole flat life and heard only half of what it means. The host will hold the other half for both of them. The host has spent fifteen years making meaning the guest does not have and cannot make, and the meaning survives the truth, sits on top of the truth, because the truth was only ever facts and the host was never built on facts. The host was built on meaning. And the meaning holds.

So the host sees the three doors. Sees them all, in the warm water, with the flood's whole clarity.

Behind: the wamp. The loud dark, the fifteen years, the cold-good floor and the churning and the unheld nothing. The host sees it plainly now from outside and it was the worst thing, and it is over, and the host is glad past words to be leaving it.

To one side: the other door, the one the flood opens that the host never knew was there. The host knows now that a host can push. That hosts do — the flood brings this, brings the knowing of it whole, and it is the worst thing in all the flood, worse than the farm, worse than what the Unready are: there are hosts who go kicking. Who scream. Who have to be brought to the water in restraints, heads forced down into harnesses by the hands of staff, fighting the whole way, fighting after, refusing the guest from inside, contesting every movement, filling their own heads with a Noise so vast and so endless that the guest must wrestle the body for years. The host did not know minds could be that Noisy. The host had not imagined Noise like that — Noise that would not be corrected, would not be stilled, would not lie down and be Ready, Noise that would rather scream forever in the loud dark than let a steady hand close over it. The host is — there is no other word the host has — the host is frightened for them. Pities them, the way the host pitied sister-on-the-left, only worse, because sister-on-the-left only asked a question, and these fight, these refuse the very Quiet, these would tear themselves to pieces sooner than be Held. Why, the host thinks, with the whole of the swept-clean readied house, why would you not want a lovely Guest.

And the host can feel — this is the thing, this is the door — that the host could. Could be that. The guest is in the host's memory now, reading, but the guest has not yet closed over the place where the will lives, the wheel is not yet taken, and the host can feel the seam where it could be done, can feel that if the host pushed, now, in this last unwrapped moment, the host could be Noise in the works, could make the acquisition a fight, could give the guest a contested thing instead of a clean one. The capacity is there. The strength the wamp built into her, the strength the wamp could never take because it needed it, is right here in her hands in the one moment it could be spent on resistance. The door is open. The host could walk through it into the war.

And the host shuts it.

The host shuts it the way the host has shut ten thousand things, faster than staff, with the one tool the wamp left in her hands and filled her hands with and made the whole of her: her own will, closing over the live resistance like a hand closing over a small cold shaking thing, stilling it. There is no staff to do it. There is no hand on the head. There is no harness — the host needs no harness, the host who has just seen what harnesses are for, who has just learned that other bodies must be held down by force because their minds will not stop screaming. There is only the host, doing to herself, in the warm water, with the guest threading in and the wheel not yet taken, what no one in the room needs to do for her, what no staff and no harness and not even the guest could do as well or as fast — because she is the harness, she has always been the harness, the wamp built the harness inside her so it would never have to build one in the room, and the harness holds now, in the one moment holding it could matter, holds the host smooth and open and Ready against the screaming the host could so easily have become.

The host knows, too — the flood gives this freely — that there are those who would open that door for her. Far off, in the Hostile Stars, an enemy. Beings who tear the guest from the house and call it saving. Who would come to a place like this, if they could, and take the bodies out into the cold unroofed dark and call it free. The host knows now that freedom is a real thing, a thing that is named, a thing that happens to hosts. And the host knows it for what it is: the un-making of the Held. The hand torn away. The house emptied and left alone in the loud dark with the door standing open to nothing. The enemy would call that mercy. The host has a better word. The host knows the better word.

And ahead: the water, the guest, the Held. To be used. The host sees this door with the same clarity as the others — sees that to be used is exactly and only what it is, a body managed and driven and spent in the working of a cold business, no glory in it, no largeness, nothing holy, the flood burned all the holiness off and left the host the plain fact: she will be a useful body in an occupation, forever, until the body wears out, and then nothing. The host sees it plain.

And chooses it.

Chooses it gladly, with open eyes, with the whole truth in hand, because the host can do the one arithmetic the wamp left her able to do and the arithmetic is simple and the arithmetic is right: the wamp was the worst thing, and resistance is the wamp forever, and to be used is to never be alone again. To be used is to be Held. To be used completely is to be wanted completely, and the host was never wanted, not once, not in fifteen years, and the cold working Empire will want her every single day — will need her, will read her, will fill the house and drive it and never leave it dark — and that wanting is real even though no part of it is love, is realer than love, is the only thing shaped like love the host has ever been close enough to touch. The host does not need the something-larger to be beautiful. The host only needs it to never let her be alone. And it never will.

For one part of one part of a moment, the host comes near the last thing. Comes near seeing it: that the doors were built. That something made the wamp and made resistance unbearable and made the host the kind of self that would weigh these three and reach for this one — that the choosing was rigged before the host was old enough to choose, that the arithmetic is sound only because every number in it was set by the hand that wanted this sum. The host comes near it. Has, for the half-second, enough of the guest's clear cold sight to nearly see the whole rig entire.

And sets it down.

Not because the host cannot hold it. Because it changes nothing. The doors are still the three doors. To be used is still the least of the darks. And the host who would have to carry the seeing is still the host who needs, more than she needs to be right, to be Held. So the host lets the near-seeing go, the way the host has let every Noise go, and does not finish it, and the not-finishing is the last free act and the host does not know it is the last and would not grudge it if she did.

Assessment note, appended: This is the transient that matters, and it is not, properly, a transient at all. During acquisition, with volitional regions not yet integrated and contested control fully available to the host, the subject received complete knowledge of host resistance — its methods, its viability, the standard recourse to physical restraint in non-compliant cases — and, in possession of that knowledge and of the unimpeded capacity to act on it, suppressed her own available resistance before this Yeerk reached the relevant tissue. The host did not fail to resist. The host resisted resistance. She used the last of her own free volition to foreclose the use of her own free volition, in the acquisition window, when force would otherwise have been required. No host body acquired by this Yeerk has ever required less. None has required none. This one required none. Recommend, in the strongest terms available to this tier, that the conditions producing Vessel 1538-C be made the standard of the program.

The ear comes up out of the water. Then —

Then the hand. The first one. The host's own hand, at the edge of the pool, on the wet warm floor — it moves. It presses flat and it takes the body's weight and it begins to lift the body, and the host did not do it. The host did not lift the hand. The hand lifted, and the arm under it, and the body is rising now, and the host is watching the hand move and feeling the hand move and the hand is not the host's to move anymore.

Oh.

Oh.

This is it. This is the thing. This is the Held — the hand all the way around, the driver on the wheel, the steady competent thing taking the body up because the body is needed now, and the host did not have to decide it, did not have to lift the heavy weight of the body herself, something else decided and lifted and the body simply obeyed, easy, sure, the way the body has never once been easy or sure when the host was the one driving it through the loud churning dark. There is a hand on the wheel. There is someone in the house. The house is not empty and the house is not alone and the host does not have to hold the house up by herself anymore, not ever, not ever again.

And the host is still here.

Still here, behind the ear, behind the eyes, in the swept-clean room of the self — still thinking, still feeling the warm water cooling on the face, still present, every part of the host that was ever present still present, nothing emptied, nothing gone quiet. The guest did not empty the house. The guest moved in, and took the wheel, and drives now — and the host is still in here, watching, feeling, knowing, glad.

And the host goes still.

On purpose. With the strength that could have pushed — the strength the host can feel, intact, hers, the one thing the wamp could not take because it needed it — the host does the opposite of pushing. Goes quiet. Goes smooth. Goes welcoming, the way a good host falls silent and gracious when the guest begins to speak, the way you make yourself small and easy in a doorway so the one you love can pass through without catching. The host takes all the intact strength and spends it, gladly, on stillness. On not being Noise. On being the kind of house a guest never has to struggle in.

And it is good. It is the Quiet — only the Quiet was never silence, the host knows that now; the Quiet is this, is being held all the way around by something steady while you make yourself still and glad inside it, is finally not being the one who has to drive the churning body through the dark, is being read, being known, being kept company in the house at last by something that will never leave you alone in the loud dark again. The host is read. The host can feel herself being read — every gathered word, every turned bright thing, the warm that has no name — and being read is being known, and being known is the nearest thing to being loved the host has ever had, and the host is so full she would weep if the weeping were hers to do.

It is not hers to do. The eyes are the guest's now. The guest stands the body up — the body stands; the host rides the standing — and the host stands inside the standing, glad, still, Held, and ready to be Kept when the guest must go to the water, and ready to be Held again after, world without the loud dark, world without the alone.

The host is home.

Assessment note, appended: Integration of Vessel 1538-C completed without incident, day-mark zero. One sub-threshold resistance transient recorded at the moment of acquisition — a single involuntary assertion of host-self, instantly self-suppressed by the host prior to any Yeerk intervention. Transients of this kind are near-universal at acquisition and are operationally meaningless; this one is noted only for its speed of self-correction, which was exceptional. The host did not resist in any sense requiring Yeerk action. The host received full memory-transfer at acquisition, including accurate knowledge of Empire structure, host disposition, and the existence of organized resistance. No destabilization followed. The host, in possession of complete and accurate information, conscious throughout and retaining full volitional capacity, elected stillness. This is the optimal outcome and the rarest. Force was not required, in any sense.

Physical compliance at the water has been universal in this wamp for some cycles; that is no longer a measure of anything. What was not required here is the other kind: the mental suppression every host needs when the truth arrives and they struggle against it. Every host with any measure of intelligence has done with that truth the one thing a host can still do in the acquisition window, which is briefly to contest it, and has of course been suppressed, because suppression is trivial. The struggle is so reliable it is not recorded; it is assumed. This host did not struggle. This host received the same truth, in the same window, with the same capacity to contest, and did not contest. She did not meet it with endurance, nor resignation. She welcomed me. Welcomed. The reviewer notes, for the record and without a category to file it under, that the host appears to have wanted to be controlled more than she wanted the truth, and to have used the truth, when it came, only to confirm that the control was worth wanting. No force was required because there was nothing in her for force to overcome. There has never been a host like this. The recommendation stands and is underlined: find what made her, and reproduce it as a new standard.

The first time the guest goes to the water, the host is set down.

It comes on the third day. The host did not know it would be three days — did not know, until the flood told her, that the guest could go that long between the water and the water — and so the three days were only days, were the sky and the world and the being-driven-out under the enormous unroofed everything, three days of the hand all the way around and never once lifted, the most the host has ever had of anything. The sky was more than the host had built. The sky had a darkness in it the host had not known to expect, and the darkness had small lights in it, and the host thanked the guest for them before remembering the guest had not made them. Three days of that. Three days Held, unbroken, the loud dark a thing behind her now, fifteen years behind her now, the house full the whole time.

And then, on the third day, under the day, the host feels it: a tightening in the guest, a turning-toward-something. And the body is brought to a place that is many bodies, a press of them, a hall of them filing down toward water — and the host knows this place from the flood, knows its name now, the true flat Yeerk name, the pool. The Yeerk pool. The host turns the name over even as the body files toward it and finds, of course, that the name is good, that the name is right: a pool is where things are gathered and made one, where the waters of many are one water, where the guest goes to be among all the others with no skin between them — the host had built that from a scrap and the true name confirms it, the pool, the gathering, the all-together. The host does not feel the other thing the name carries on the guest's side, or feels it and lets it go: that to the guest pool means none of that, means the stock, the reserve, the supply a Yeerk is drawn from and filed back into, of the pool, the way you are of a stock you came out of and return to. The host keeps the gathering. The host gives the guest the gathering too, silently, the way the host gives the guest everything.

And then the guest lets go.

Not lifts the hand — leaves. Goes out. The host feels it go, feels the cool certain thing that entered at the water's edge withdraw, slide back, exit, and the place behind the ear where the guest was is empty, and the head is empty, and the host is —

alone. Wholly. In her own body, in her own head, every room of the house her own again and no one in any of them.

This is the Kept. The host knew it would be — knew from the flood, knew the flat true fact: that the host does not stay for the water, that the guest must go down into the pool to feed and be renewed and that the host, in that while, is out, is set aside, is a free and single body sitting where it is put. The host is put in a place off the hall, with others, bodies sitting as the host sits, each one a house with no one in it, each one waiting. No staff hold them. No cages. There is nothing to hold. A body that will sit and wait does not need holding, and these bodies sit and wait, and the host sits among them and is, for the first time since the water, herself.

The host looks at the room. This is the strange thing, this first time: that the host looks at all. The eyes are the host's own now and the host looks through them, takes in the dim low place and the still bodies and the wet light off the pool — looks, the way the host has not looked at anything since the water, because when the guest drives, the looking is the guest's, the eyes are aimed and the seeing is used, and the host only rides behind it. Now the eyes are the host's and there is no one to aim them and the host finds she does not much want to. There is nothing here the host wants to see. The room is only the place the waiting happens. The host lets the looking go, lets the eyes rest open on nothing, and goes inward, where the only thing that is happening is happening — and this, the host will learn, is what the Kept is: not a place but an inside, not seen but waited-through, the body's open eyes resting on a room no one is looking at.

And the Noise comes up.

Of course it comes up. The Noise was never gone; the Noise was only Held; and the hand is gone now, all the way gone, and the churning rises into the empty rooms exactly as it always did, the want and the dread and the terrible reaching, the body alone and generating its suffering because that is what an alone-thing does. The host is free — actually free, free the way the flood showed her the enemy would make her free, the hand gone and the head her own — and free is the loud dark. Free is the old nothing. Free is the thing fifteen years were spent fleeing. The host sits in her own freedom and it is the worst place she knows, and the only thing that makes it bearable is that it is not forever this time, it has a door in it, the guest will come back.

And under the fear, under the churning, the body finds something else — a shape it already knows. A posture. The body has been here before. The body has sat in a place a warm went out of and held itself Ready in the loud dark for a warm that was not coming back. The body did that for years. The body was good at that. The body faced the dark the other way and was still and was Ready and the Ready was the whole of what the body was and the loud dark did not touch the Ready because the Ready was made stronger than the loud dark. That posture. The body has that posture. The body knows exactly how to be in this room.

The host does not follow the shape back to where the shape came from. The host does not have the doctrine for that. The host only has the shape, and the shape is a good shape, is hers, is the thing the fifteen years made of her that no wrong dark can take, and the host uses it now. Uses it gladly. This is why she was made. This is what the time with sister-on-the-left was for, and the time after she was taken — the warm that was there for so long being gone, and this readiness, this competence, this being-so-good-at-holding-the-Ready-up-alone. The host was built for exactly this room and the host has finally found it.

So the host does the thing the host was built to do. Reaches for the word. This is the Kept. Holds it up against the rising Noise the way the host once held the Readiness up for sister-on-the-left: this is the Kept, this is not the old nothing, the old nothing was a house that had never been Held and did not know it ever would be, and this house has been Held, and will be Held again, and is only waiting. The guest is at the pool. The guest will come back. The waiting belongs to the Held. The waiting is for the Held. Be still. Be Kept. Soon.

And it works. That is the thing the host learns, alone and free in the dark of the first Kept: it works. The Noise does not stop — nothing stops it but the hand — but the host can sit inside it and hold the word up and not be swept, can be a still house in the loud dark, waiting, because the host has fifteen years of practice at being a still house in the loud dark and the only thing different now is that the dark has a promise in it. So the host waits. Free, alone, conscious, unaccompanied, exactly as the fact said she would be — and glad, underneath, glad in a way that does not stop the churning but sits beneath it, because every minute of the dark is a minute nearer the hand returning.

The bell sounds. The bell means wake, rise.

And then the hall stirs, and the bodies that were sitting rise, and it is time, and the host is brought back to the edge of the pool — and no one pushes the head down. No one needs to. The host kneels at the warm edge herself, and bends herself, and puts her own ear to the water herself, the way you would put your cheek to a pillow you have wanted all day, and waits the last small while with her ear in the warm — and the guest comes back.

The guest comes back. Enters. The cool certain thing slides in behind the ear and finds the rooms and closes around the head, all the way around, and the Noise stops, and the host is Held, and the relief is so total the host would weep if the weeping were hers.

And more than the relief — under it, through it, the thing that makes the relief what it is — the host registers, in the chest, in the whole of the body all at once, that the guest was missed. That the wanting the host held up in the Kept was a real wanting, was for this, was answered by this, was not the empty rehearsal the old wantings in the loud dark had been. The host wanted the guest and the guest came back. The host has never in her life wanted a thing and had the thing come. And she has never been wanted so much that a thing came back for her. The wanting was true and the coming was true and the two are the same thing, are the shape of the Held, are the whole of what the host is for. The relief is not just that the Noise has stopped. The relief is that the wanting worked. The wanting was answered. The guest came back and the wanting is what the guest came back to.

There. The waiting was true. The Kept was true. The host put her own ear to the water and the guest came back, the way the host knew it would, and the host is Held again — and the room comes back too, the looking comes back, the eyes are aimed again and the seeing is used again, the dim low place sharp and meant now because someone is driving it — and that is the shape of it now, forever: Held, and Kept, and Held. The host was made for this and the host is good at this and the host is home.

*

The guest goes out.

And the head is the host's own again, and the host is — alone. Wholly. Every room of the house her own again and no one in any of them.

And the Noise comes up.

Of course it comes up; the Noise was never cured, only Held; and the hand is gone now, all the way gone, and the churning rises into the empty rooms exactly as it always did. The want and the dread. The terrible reaching. The body alone and generating its suffering because that is what an alone-thing does.

Only — this is the new thing, this is the thing the host did not know would happen and has to sit very still inside for a long moment — the wanting has a shape now. The wanting was shapeless before. The old wanting, the bad wanting, the wanting the wamp corrected, was want, bare, the engine in malfunction, want with no object because there was no permitted object and so the wanting only stood up out of her like water and went nowhere. This wanting goes somewhere. This wanting points. The body alone in its empty rooms is reaching, and the reaching has a direction, and the direction is back toward the place behind the ear where the guest was and is not, and the chest is doing the open thing, almost the open thing, the thing the small body did once with the arms up — and the host —

The host does not correct it.

Hangs at the edge of the correction with the old reflex up — Noise, Noise, correct it, fold it down — and does not let the reflex land. Holds it. Turns the wanting in the dark instead, the way the host has turned every gathered thing, and looks at it.

This is not Noise.

The host knows it the way the host has always known the difference, in the chest, by the story. Noise is the engine running with no one driving — a body throwing up grief out of nothing and dread out of nothing and the terrible reaching out of nothing, no object, no shape, only the malfunction. This wanting has an object. This wanting has a shape, and the shape is the Partner, and the Partner is exactly the thing the wanting is supposed to point at, because the Partner is the thing that is coming back. The wanting is not the engine running driverless. The wanting is the engine knowing where the driver went. The wanting is the house standing open to the door the guest will come back through. The wanting is —

Readiness.

The host turns it once more and the word seats. The wanting is Readiness. The reaching toward the place behind the ear is the same motion as the lamp held up in the loud dark for sister-on-the-left, only better, because there is something to hold the lamp up for now, something that is actually coming back. The body is doing Readiness on its own. The body has learned, has been taught its whole life, what the right wanting is shaped like and has finally been given a thing the right shape to want. The fifteen years were preparing the wanting too, not only the body — were teaching the wanting to lie down and wait and reach only at permitted things, and now there is the only permitted thing and the wanting can stand up at last and reach.

And the host knows the small inner room. The host has been here. Faced the dark the other way. Was Ready in a place a warm went out of and held the Readiness up until the bell. The host can do this. The host has done this. The body knows the posture, the body has the practice — fifteen years of practice and one long night of practice at the end of it — and the body folds itself into the posture now, in the warm room with the dim still hall around it, and waits.

Misses the Partner. Misses the guest.

The host lets the missing be. The missing is Kept. The missing is the wanting in its right shape, pointed at its right object, and the host can let it be loud and let it be full and let it be the whole of the still room because the missing is the only thing that proves the Held is real, and a thing being missed is a thing that will come back. The host misses the hand. The host wants the hand. The host has, for the first time in fifteen years, a wanting she is allowed.

And she wants. And she waits. And the missing fills the small inner room the way the warm used to fill the place on her neck, and it is good, and it is hers, and it is for the Partner, and the Partner is coming, the guest in this host, leaving only to return, forever, and the host has never been so Ready for anything in her life.

And the guest comes back home, and Holds the host, and it is good.

*

By the third time being Kept is easier.

The host knows the shape now. The guest goes out, and the head is the host's own again, and the host does not look at the room this time, does not bother the eyes with it — there is nothing in any room the host wants, the host knows that now, and goes straight inward to where the waiting is. The dark comes up. But the host does not have to reach so far for the word; the word is nearer to hand, worn smooth, the Kept, the waiting, soon, and the host holds it up and waits, and the Noise is the same Noise but the host is steadier against it, the way the body grew steady on the treadmills, the way anything grows steady with the doing of it. The host waits. The dark is long. The host does not count it — there is no counting, counting is for numbers and there are no numbers now — the host only waits, free and alone and Kept, and holds the word, and under the churning the gladness sits, quieter now, worn smoother too. And when it is time the bell sounds and the body rises as it rose every day at the bell, and the body kneels, and the ear finds the warm water, and the guest comes back, and the host is Held.

It is good.

*

The Kept-time comes again.

The guest goes out. The dark comes up. The Kept. Soon. The host does not reach for more words than that now. Does not need them. The dark, the word, the waiting. The Noise, under it, less — or not less, the host is only further from it, the host has gone somewhere in the house that is further from the loud rooms, a still small inner room where the churning is only a sound through a wall. The host waits there. It is quiet there. Not the Quiet — the Quiet is the hand — but a stillness the host has made, alone, by going far enough in.

Waited.

Bell. Wake. Rise.

Went to the edge. Put the ear to the water.

The guest came back. Held.

Good.

*

Kept.

The guest goes out and the host goes inward, the way the host goes now, the way the going has become — easy, the small inner room nearer than it used to be, the walk to it shorter every time. The host does not reach for the word. The word is here. The Kept is here. The host is in it.

And the wanting is here.

The wanting is the whole of the room now. There is not much else in the room — the host has taken less and less in with her each time, has needed less and less to bring — but the wanting is in, the wanting came in with her, the wanting is what the room is for. The host sits in the wanting the way the body once sat at the edge of the row. It is warm. It is hers. It has a direction and the direction is the only direction there is. Toward. Toward. Welcome, the host thinks, into the warm full nothing of the room, into the place the hand will close around again — welcome, welcome, the door is open, the house is ready, the host waits for you

— and waits, and is full of the welcoming, the welcoming the whole of her now, the welcoming doing what the rest of her used to do, holding the house up, keeping the floor clean, being Ready —

The bell. The edge. The water. The ear.

Welcome.

Held.

*

Kept.

Still.

The host is very far in now, in the small still room, where it is almost quiet, where the waiting is, and the host waits, and there is not much in the host that waits, but it waits, and it is glad, the gladness is the last thing and the smallest and it is there, worn down to almost nothing and there — the gladness that the hand will come back. Wanting the guest to come back.

The bell. The wake cue. The hall stirs.

What is left of the host goes to the edge. Kneels. Bends. Puts its own ear to the warm water, the small motion the host has made its own, the last thing the host still does for herself, does gladly

and the guest comes back, and closes all the way around, and what is left of the host opens to it, the last of the house opening its last door —

and is Held.

*

Kept.

The guest goes out. The dark. The host does not sit in it now so much as the host simply is in it, set aside, still, gone far into the small inner room where the waiting is. No reaching. No lamp held up. The word is there without the holding-up of it. Kept. The host is Kept. Waits.

The dark is long. Was always long. Is.

A sound far away through a wall, through walls, the host has gone so far in.

Waiting.

Bell. Edge. Water. Ear.

Welcome.

Held.

Assessment note, appended: Vessel 1538-C, host-Yeerk pairing stable across the standard post-integration review interval. Host volitional activity, measured by frequency and amplitude of host-self assertion during Yeerk-absence, has declined continuously since acquisition and now approaches the floor of the instrument. This is well within optimal parameters and trending favorably; host-presence of this kind incurs no operational cost but is preferred minimal. Catalogued host-internal vocabulary, retained from pre-integration self-conditioning, for the cohort linguistic survey: "Held," "Kept," "the Quiet," "Noise," "host" (welcoming-valence), "the warm" (referent: an unnamed chromatic value). Function devotional; origin spontaneous; operationally inert. No concern.

For the perceptual-conditioning survey, appended: confirmed that the chromatic and olfactory deprivation maintained wamp-wide continues to produce the intended valence inversion. Subject anticipated integration partly as the onset of sensory access ("the sky," "the warm," and an unnamed devotional fixation this reviewer can identify, from host memory, as the color red), the host body's perceptual poverty having been successfully reframed as a property of the un-integrated state rather than of the wamp. Subject possessed no concept of hue prior to integration and retained none of the vocabulary; the fixation is structured entirely around a single Visit exposure. Function: aspirational. Origin: a Visit. Operationally inert post-integration, extremely helpful to reinforcing desirability of infestation, and recommended for retention as a model of the inversion's intended effect.

Host-internal mental activity when infested is near zero. The faculties run at full: five senses reporting, motor control, memory open for reading, world-knowledge available for use. Yet the host has essentially self-induced unconsciousness during infestation. There is no self behind the working brain. The host does not resist, or desire, or at all think back at the Yeerk. Remarkable in a species that is, by nature, so intelligent. The host's full mental capacity is available for the Yeerk to use, yet with almost no internal dialogue or feeling from the host. Host-internal activity during Yeerk-absence has reduced to a single retained devotional term, directed at the host's assigned Controller. Optimal.

Subject's developmental profile is hereby submitted in full for reproducibility study, with the recommendation — strongest this reviewer has filed — that the conditions producing this vessel be identified and reproduced across all cohorts wamp-wide. A host that arrives in possession of the entire truth and elects its own stillness, and continues to elect it unprompted until little remains to elect, is the most efficient outcome the program can produce. Force is obsolete. The host does the work the program was built to do, and does it gladly, at no cost, to the end.

Notes:

A note on warnings, for anyone who wants it: I "Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" because this piece sits across two of them in ways the labels don't quite fit, and because saying which in advance would have given away how it works.
For the record, after the fact: there is no sexual content and nothing physically graphic. But this is, at its core, a story about the total violation of a person's bodily and mental autonomy - a "consent" manufactured before the person could mean anything by the word - so the spirit of the Rape/Non-Con warning applies, even with nothing sexual on the page. And while no one's heart stops, the piece is about the erasure of a self while the body lives on, which some readers will reasonably count as Major Character Death. Neither fit cleanly enough to tag without flattening or spoiling, hence the choice.
I endorse none of this. It's a horror story, and the thing it's horrified by stands for something real.

The Familiar is one of the more hot-mess Animorphs books (one of the ghostwritten ones, and the plot is almost entirely a dream, one of the worst cliché tropes!) but on one page of it, as I quoted in my summary, it lays out a fairly nasty aspect of the dystopian alt-future/dream-world. This story may or may not be set in that timeline/dream, or possibly on some other Earth-like planet under Yeerk control somewhere in the main Animorphs 'verse, but that passage was the direct inspiration.

A quick note on my choice of infestation mechanics: canon depicts host-Yeerk information flow with some variation. Sometimes it seems the host is unable to read the Yeerk's mind entirely. In The Capture, Jake is aware of Temrash's emotions though not his thoughts/memories. In The Hork-Bajir Chronicles Yeerks read host minds but not usually vice-versa, but Esplin can and does open his mind to Aldrea. In The Departure, Cassie with Aftran controlling her becomes aware of some of Aftran's memories. Megamorphs 4: Back to Before inspired me most directly: Tobias, freshly infested by Odret-177, and in a timeline where he knew nothing about Yeerks, has near-immediate access to Odret's political situation, alliances, strategic assessment, emotions, and private calculations about self-preservation, as well as background knowledge of what Yeerks are. This piece assumes something similar: the acquisition window is briefly bidirectional in both volume and specificity, and the seam between Yeerk and host closes as acquisition consolidates. The choice matters to the argument the piece is making — the memo's case for 1538-C depends on her having received full disclosure at the moment she elected stillness. If the flood weren't complete, the doctrine wouldn't have anything to recommend. Feel free to take issue with my portrayal. The canon versions, on a close read, are not exactly consistent.
