For the majority of Katsuki’s life he was mostly indifferent to the secondary gender hierarchy in Japan. Sure they had to go to the mandatory “Alpha & Omega basics” classes to understand the different needs an alpha and omega faced, which Katsuki aced like every other subject, but after the mandatory classes finished Katsuki was not interested to attend the follow up ones that go into more detail.
It wasn’t like he had to go since he never presented as either an alpha or omega, which Katsuki appreciated immensely. He was a beta, he had no business learning about an alpha’s prideful ego or an omega’s “special needs.” He knew the basics and that is all he needs to know because he has his own worries about becoming a hero.
It was unusual for a beta to become a pro hero. Usually betas are support heroes or sidekicks, they work behind the scenes while the alpha heroes monopolize all the attention to themselves. With this realization Katsuki had to prove that he was skilled enough to be good, if not better than an alpha.
He thought he proved himself to be more than qualified during the war.
He thought he was a beta until his presentation happened abnormally late right before his 18th birthday.
