Kyoujurou is unable to accept a future where he was stripped of his own purpose, mistaking his survival as failure for not beheading Upper moon 3 back at the Mugen train. Akaza thinks otherwise and stays with him as he recovers all while being unsure of his reasoning on doing so.
Over time, their bond strengthens into something more than friends as they no longer consider themselves as enemies but also not as companions either. Kyoujurou’s guilt soon twists into the realization that he may hold feelings for this demon he was taught to hate. Though neither of them speaks their feelings aloud with both of them aware that choosing to be with each other would mean its own consequences.
Basically they both suffer but Kyoujurou suffers more but Akaza also suffers with him if that makes sense.

Clark smiled back at her, a ‘congratulations’ on his lips yet... something held him back. It was hard to distinguish the line for himself, between being friendly and feeling like he was showing too much, feeling and exposing too much.
He focused on the story instead, quickly using his speed to read through the article– surprised (although, he didn’t know why he should be), that it was actually very poignant and perspicuous— it was smart and just the right amount of funny. Just like Lois.
