Summary
Summer 1989 has begun for the recent graduates of Hawkins High School: El, Mike, Lucas, Max, Dustin and Will. However, their last few months before college gets interrupted, thanks to a mysterious crash that occurs in Hawkins. Upon investigation, the party realizes there may be someone, or something, in town with powers similar to El’s or is simply from the Upside Down. But as they go down the rabbit hole, questions emerge as to what’s happening now. Meanwhile, a stranger arrives into town, and wants to know all they can about Hawkins’ recent history.

Eddie loosens his death hold on Steve, then leans back to watch him, pulling his arms back in a slow way that seems kind of reluctant. “Where are we?” he asks, and he seems a little more pulled together, now he’s breathing and done rambling.
“A… hallway?” Steve offers with a confused look around. “In my dreams.”
Eddie lets out a surprised cackle. “What?”
“Yeah, I’m dreaming right now. Obviously,” he adds, with a little embarrassed gesture at Eddie.
Who, being an asshole, raises his eyebrows with an amused little smirk. “Obviously,” with a sweeping gesture at himself, “because I so often feature in your dreams?”

The second time Eddie woke up, he wasn’t there. Steve called him, his voice almost as light as it was when Max woke up; “He’s asking for you.”
If it wasn’t for his stupid busted ankle, Dustin would have happily biked there. Instead he waited impatiently for Steve to come pick him up. He resisted the urge to pace, crutches or not, because he was meant to be resting or whatever. As if he could rest now!

The dominoes fall differently and Eddie and Max live, while Vecna dies. Hawkins is still in chaos. With cover-stories, impossible injuries and disaster all around, it's up to The Party to look after each other.
OR: A prequel to "The Kingdoms Never Weep," covering the year after Vecna's defeat. Heaven help anyone who tries to tear The Party apart now.

The first thing Steve sees when they get back to the trailer is Dustin. Rather, he hears him before he really sees him, and the heart wrenching wails coming from the boy makes his heart almost stop in his chest. Steve rushes up to him, hand on his shoulder immediately.
“Dustin! Are you oka-"
He doesn’t have time to finish his sentence before Dustin turns to him, big tears running down his cheeks as he speaks, choking out the words between violent sobs.
“Eddie! It’s Eddie!”
Steve looks down. On the ground next to them is in fact Eddie Munson. He’s lying there, covered in so much blood that Steve almost doesn’t recognize him.
Fuck.

We're so used to Eleven being the ultimate hero but...
What if El didn't regain her full powers in episode eight? And the military raid didn't go quite as planned and Dr. Brenner wasn't shot and killed in the desert? What if battling Vecna was done differently?
AKA alternate scenes and ending to season four's "Nina Project" silo lab and episodes eight and nine of volume two ("Papa" - 4x08 and "The Piggyback" - 4x09). As much as I have mixed emotions about season 4, I did want to write this and so a big thanks to jopper1983 for the initial prompt and patience.
This is only my interpretation of the characters created by the Duffer Brothers, I don't own Stranger Things, etc.

But, that wasn't right either. He didn't feel that way towards Jonathan, Steve was certain of that and, it'd been a similar situation. Then there was Robin. He'd made himself believe that's what he wanted, needed... only because it seemed logical at the moment, and then, well...

Steve has a lot of unresolved issues he vehemently pushes aside and now he has to deal with his new found feelings for a comatose Eddie while he helps him get better.
