He opens the door to see Will crouched by the trash can, one of the letters open in his hands, and more scattered on the floor around him. He looks up in surprise when Mike enters, and then his expression turns to worry.
“Mike…”
“What are you doing?” Mike shouts, running over to grab the letter out of his hands.
“Mike, I’m sorry,” Will says, releasing them without a fight and standing up as Mike stuffs the letters back into the trash hurriedly. He stands up slowly, fists clenched and head down in shame.
A post-epilogue fix-it set one year after the epilogue in which Mike comes to terms with his grief, his sexuality, and eventually his feelings for Will.

All he could feel, as his vision turned black and consciousness slipped away, was what felt like a press of lips against his, a final warmth, a kiss goodbye as he ventured into the unknown. He was afraid, but even if it wasn’t real, the kiss, filled with home, made him feel safe.
