Nursing his cigarette between his lips, he leaned back, eyes traveling over the boy beside him. Outside of the bar’s lighting, he could see him clearly: the slight gloss in his eyes, the gentle tan on his skin, the deep bruise tucked away on the side of his neck.
His eyes narrowed, piercing through the purple stain on Will’s neck, unrelenting. Mike took another drag of his cigarette; the inhale was long, flooding his mouth with the taste of smoke.
But the smoke did little to soothe the burning sensation in his chest.
The silence between them dragged on; it was heavy and unbearable. Will opened his mouth then shut it again, pursing his lips as he gathered his thoughts.
“What brings you to Chicago?” Will asked, voice hesitant and muffled by the loud music coming from inside. He lifted his head to meet Mike’s sharp gaze.
Mike merely shrugged, the truth escaping before he could swallow it down. “I was looking for you.”
