Chapter Text
Marcy Chang hated to do this but stalling wouldn’t avoid the situation. She hummed to herself as she picked up her office landline to place this call.
Mercedes answered her cell phone. “Hello?”
“Hey, Mercy. It’s Marcy.”
“Hi!”
Marcy smirked at her happy sister. “It’s about time for classes to start and to cut you off before you start, let’s go shopping.”
Mercedes screamed.
Marcy’s smirk widened.
Mercedes finally got a grip. “Where are we shopping?”
“Rodeo’s all I got.”
“Yay! I’ll call everyone!”
“I’ll call everyone. You tell your twin to move her ass.”
Mercedes giggled. “Marcy.”
Marcy pursed her lips. “I’m serious. I’m not shopping for clothes all day long.”
“Okay, Marcy. I’ll get her to move quickly.”
“Thank you.” Marcy hung up before picking the receiver up again to call Kurt, who’d take the longest besides the slow Quinn.
Quinn made it before half an hour was up. Marcy was impressed. “What’d she threaten you with?”
Quinn was offended. “She didn’t!”
“Then how’d you know who I meant?”
Quinn was fit to be tied.
Mercedes hugged both. “No frownies. We’re shopping.”
“Chile, you were made to be a mommy.” Marcy teased.
Mercedes rocked with her hug. “Thank you, sweetie.”
“How cute.” Karou snarked, mad to be outside for shopping.
“Cuter than you by far.” Marcy detached Mercedes.
Quinn laughed loudly.
Karou stomped a foot, upset.
“She called you ugly!”
“Where’s Laura?” Karen rolled her eyes.
“Who cares?” Marcy watched the time on her phone.
“Laura’s not coming?” Mercedes pouted.
“What school is she going to?”
“She’s getting her doctorate.”
“In art design.”
“Stop it, Marcy.” Mercedes tried not to laugh at that.
“Fine. I’ll call her but she better be here by the time we go to the next store or we’re leaving her like we’re leaving Hummel now.”
Mercedes eeped. “Kurt’ll be here!”
“He’s got five minutes before I go in and get what I want.”
Mercedes took her phone out to call Kurt. “You’ve got to hurry before she leaves you!”
“Cedes?” It was clear Kurt was confused.
“Kurtie, you’ve got to get here! Marcy wants to leave you!”
“Will!” Marcy bit off. “Will leave him!”
“See?!”
“I’m almost there.” Kurt apparently heard. “Blaine took so long-"
“Blaine’s coming?” Marcy raised a brow. “What about Davey?”
“Is Dave coming, Kurt?” Mercedes asked.
“No.” He answered. “He’s sleeping.”
Lucky son of a bitch… Marcy groused internally. “Well hurry your ass up. Even Q’s here.”
Kurt heard that. “I’m right around the corner.”
“What corner, Kurt?” Marcy knew that timeframe.
“Oh! I see Baby!” Mercedes waved as she hung up.
“He got lucky.”
Mercedes hugged Marcy against her wishes. “He’s here!”
Santana laughed. “Fairy almost got left!”
“So did you.” Marcy pinched the huggy Mercedes.
“Ow!” Mercedes sulked.
Santana was offended. “I came on time!”
“Because Britt pushed you.” Marcy wasn’t fooled.
Brittany nodded. “She didn’t want to get up.”
Santana huffed. “I would have gotten up eventually.”
“But shopping?” Carly was hurt.
“Car.” Anna rubbed her back.
Carly could cry. “Why do you all hate shopping?”
“Cuz it’s stupid.” Marcy spat as Kurt and Blaine got out of his SUV.
“Sports are stupid!”
“So says the cheerleader.”
Carly felt tricked. “I-"
“Need to calm down. We’re here, ain’t we?”
“But you need to smile!”
“Eat me.”
Carly deflated. “You never like to smile.”
“She’s right. Even I smile.” Daisy rolled her bronze eyes.
“Do you now?” Marcy watched the two men approach.
Daisy was offended. “I do smile!”
“Okay.”
Daisy couldn’t fight that and it infuriated her.
Karen huffed. “Stop fighting! Or I’m going home! I don’t want to be here anyway!”
“Why?!” Carly did cry.
“Shopping sucks.” Marcy reminded her. “Kay’s right. Let’s just get the hell away from here.”
“No!” Mari was surprisingly the one to fight it.
Everyone looked at the redhead in surprise.
“We have to be outside!”
“Why?” Marcy frowned.
“Because.”
“Because why, Mar?”
Mari twiddled her thumbs. “Kids are at home.”
Marcy smiled slowly. “You want away from Bas and my Mea?”
Anna was confused. “She never said Sebastian.”
“She said Sebastian.” Daisy grumped.
“What’s going on, guys?” Kurt asked as he and Blaine finally made it.
Brittany pouted, understanding Mari. “Marcy and Karen want to go home but Mari doesn’t because she’s sick of Sebastian.”
Blaine double blinked. “She is?”
Mari sulked. “Just a little.”
“Why?” Marcy asked dryly. “It should be a staunch “sick of his ass”.”
Mari giggled. “He keeps wanting to make love.”
“That’s my girl.”
Mari glowed. “I think he wants a son.”
“Tell him to push him out.”
Karen, Daisy and Karou laughed loudly.
Santana screamed.
Quinn smiled. “That’s what she told me to tell Finn.”
Mari thought about it. “Does that mean we should adopt?”
“It’s so much better than getting pregnant.” Marcy was serious.
“Really?”
“Yes!” Mercedes said happily.
Santana was no good.
Brittany held her upright. “I want to adopt!”
“I’m not sure but I think you should be married first.” Marcy scratched her head.
Brittany began screaming, running in place. “I’m getting married!”
Marcy was so confused but Mercedes kept her quiet. “Britt? You’ve got to calm down.”
Brittany shut up but kept running.
Santana, meanwhile, was in an uproar. “What?”
“We’re getting married!” Brittany tried to be quiet but was loud anyway.
Santana blinked.
“Ooh.” Karou made trouble. “I don’t think Lopez wants to get married.”
Marcy licked her lips slowly. “Love you, Cuz.”
Karou beamed.
Santana started forward to fight Karou but Brittany stopped her from getting far. “You don’t want to marry me?”
Everyone heard the hurt in her tone.
“Is that a sale?” Marcy pointed randomly.
“I think it is.” Mercedes agreed.
“But I want to see why Tana doesn’t want to marry Britt.” Quinn’s peridot eyes shone.
Karou laughed. “It should be the other way around.”
Marcy’s lips twitched but there was no mirth in her tone. “Bring your bad ass on here.”
“Quinnie.” Mercedes narrowed her scotch eyes on her twin.
Quinn pouted but shlepped into the nearest store.
Kurt, Blaine and the girls left Santana and Brittany on the street.
Santana didn’t want to go through this. She sighed heavily. “Why can’t we just shop?”
“You hate me?” Brittany was hurt.
“What?!” Santana started. “I don’t hate you!”
“You don’t want to marry me.”
Santana struggled to speak.
“You don’t want to marry me.” Brittany saw. She detangled them and walked to the store, heart heavy.
Santana wanted to call her back but what could she say? She didn’t want to marry Brittany. Right?
Marcy found a deeply pleated short green and cream plaid skirt along with a snow fitted tee. She added forest stockings and found pearl round toe pumps. She planned on wearing her black leather jacket with moss green accents for whenever (if ever) she got cold.
She had glam at home so she would redo her manicure to be greens and whites with green and white makeup including a sage lip. She planned on using a lip ink for that but wanted it glossy as the ink was matte so she wanted to find a sparkly clear.
She found a thin black belt and a thick white scrunchie with white rhinestones before going to jewelry.
Santana was nearby, looking at a row of bracelets.
“What’d ya find?” Marcy asked for silver and/or green jewelry, getting a lot but simple so she could shine brightly but not gaudy.
Santana jumped when Marcy spoke but didn’t say anything until after the doctor-in-training collected all her jewels. “I don’t want to get married.”
“Valid.” Marcy went to a sunglasses case. She wanted a pair of green ones (not to say she didn’t have any at home but more could never hurt).
Santana was in shock and followed. “Wait? You understand? But you’re married.”
“I got caught.”
“But I have kids, too.”
“I got caught by Cupid.” Marcy pointed to the pair she wanted. They were silver all over with green lenses and diamonds in a pattern on the outside connecting to the lenses. They were whimsical and she hadn’t seen anything like them before, making her want them to exclusion.
“Cupid?” Santana chewed on her bottom lip.
“Yes, dumb-dumb. I love my husband.”
“I love-!” Santana stopped.
“Yourself?”
“Well,- I- I can’t-“ Santana quit.
“Oh? There’s something keeping you from wanting to get married; not a real desire to keep your freedom.”
Santana blinked. Was that true? “But-?”
“Yeah?” Marcy exchanged her glasses with the sunglasses. She couldn’t see a lick but she liked how everything was jade colored.
“I fought so hard to be out. I love Britt.”
“Do you love your boyfriend?”
“Of course-!” Santana stopped again.
“Then what’s the problem? You love them both. You gave birth to a kid for them.”
Santana was so confused. “I don’t know. I guess I just don’t know if they love me.”
Marcy looked straight at Santana, making the Latina jump. “Of course they love you.”
Santana resembled a puffer fish, the way her mouth open and closed. “But-?”
“But nothing.” Marcy couldn’t even see Santana’s goldfish impression but knew she was reeling. “You’re phenomenal, Santana. It doesn’t matter what your marital status is. You’re amazing. We all see it but especially your family. If you don’t want to marry anyone (fair), you don’t have to. Just tell Britt and Artman so they can see how important marriage is to them. But if you want to get married but feel something’s holding you back, I urge you to talk to them anyway and possibly go to therapy.”
“Therapy?”
“Yeah. People think they’re too good to go but nobody’s too good for help.”
Santana thought it all over. “So you’re obsessed with me?”
“You’ve got selective hearing. That’ll hinder you in relationships.”
Santana’s jaw dropped as Marcy put her eyeglasses back on. “How’d you-?”
Marcy rolled her eyes. “What are you even getting? You’re not holding anything. I’m leaving as soon as I find some lipgloss.”
Santana felt behind. “What have you got?”
Ellen found Brittany alone and sat next to her. “Are you okay?”
Brittany’s blue eyes were full. “No. She doesn’t want to marry me.”
Ellen grimaced. “I’m sure she does.”
“She said no.” Brittany huffed big before facing the redhead. “Does Marcy want to marry you?”
Ellen wanted to say of course but realized she’d never heard the brunette say so. “I don’t know.”
Brittany could see Ellen was spiraling now. “Maybe you can ask her and when she says yes, she can talk to San?”
Ellen shook. She didn’t want to ask Marcy that!
Brittany read her aversion to the idea in her face. “Do you not want to get married?”
“I-! I-! I do!” Ellen hyperventilated. “I’ve always wanted to get married but-"
“But what?”
“Marcy and Mal never asked.”
“Maybe you can ask?”
“Marcy hates when people bring attention to her.”
“Oh right.” Brittany slumped.
Ellen was shaken now. She always had wanted to get married and now here she was, in love and she didn’t know if they’d ever marry. “Maybe I can just ask if she wants to get married and see what she says?”
“She’s the best fairy queen ever.” Brittany nodded, determined. “She’ll say yes and ask you.”
Ellen tried to be brave but the girls were starting to come together with Kurt and Blaine. She shot up and went to go to Marcy, who pushed her back. Ellen was confused as Marcy knelt on the ground before her. Since this was part jewelry store, Ellen knew Marcy could have gotten a ring from there.
The redhead was enthused at the thought that Marcy could be proposing that she jumped up and down, screaming, “Yes!” over and over.
Marcy raised her head and arched a perfect brow. “What are you doing?”
Ellen shut up and stilled. “I’m sorry. Go ahead.”
Marcy gave her girlfriend a strange look before reaching out to tie her shoe.
Ellen’s whole face dropped as she realized Marcy was just tying her shoe and that was why she had her stay back. Because she could have tripped. Gratitude took a backseat to pain because Ellen had really thought Marcy was going to propose and knowing she hadn’t, hurt.
Marcy rose. “What’s with you?”
Brittany knew exactly what Ellen was feeling. “Marcy, how could you?”
“What?”
Ellen burst into tears, unable to help it.
“What the fuck is happening?”
The others were just as lost.
Ellen plopped back down onto the bench she and Brittany were on, crying hard. “You don’t want to marry me!”
The organic expression on Marcy’s face made Karou laugh. “How are you going to take on someone else’s fight?”
“I’m not!” Ellen sobbed. “Brittany thought you’d want to marry me but you don’t!”
“Are you going to stop crying?”
“Best friend.” Karen’s lips twitched. “Let her cry.”
“You like seeing my girlfriend cry?”
“No, you sadist. But she has feelings. Let her feel them.”
“Then I’m leaving. I have no time for this.”
“Do you not want to marry anyone?” Santana teased.
“No.”
Santana didn’t expect that and neither did Ellen, who began screaming.
Marcy had a headache. “Hey! Stop all that shit!”
Ellen stopped screaming but was so sad and hurt. “You hate me!”
“It’s gettin' there.”
Mercedes swatted Marcy’s backside. “Stop that! You love her!”
“Whatever. I’m leaving. If you’re going to Fleury, come on.”
“Your girlfriend’s crying and you want perfume?” Quinn thought it was hilarious but she didn’t say so.
“Those are facts.”
Karou laughed loudly.
“What the fuck you laughin' at? You’re not married either.”
Karou scoffed. “I’m not gettin' married!”
Yuria turned her head.
Karou hurried to clean it up. “Unless you want to get married.”
“I want to get married.”
Karou’s chocolate eyes widened. “What?!”
“You don’t want to marry me?”
Karou frowned. “That’s not fair! Where is this coming from?!”
“You don’t want to marry me.” Yuria was stung.
Claudia couldn’t help but to press buttons. “Sam proposed to me.”
“Shut up, Claudia!” Yuria and Marcy barked.
Claudia beamed. “I’m claimed.”
Marcy rolled her eyes hard. “I’m leaving.”
“Without resolving your issues?” Mercedes felt that was unwise.
“Yup.” Marcy walked out with her shopping.
Karou and Santana hurried to follow.
Brittany, Yuria and Ellen burst into tears.
The others were in shock.
Kurt sidled up to Marcy as she, Karou and Santana were looking over perfume in this expensive store. “You guys don’t want to get married?”
“Kurt,-" Marcy put up a hand.
“I don’t either.” He whispered.
“You don’t?” Santana hoped.
“No.” Kurt bowed his head. “Blaine’s been dropping hints and even Dave has been picking them up.”
Karou felt hives. “Why are they doin' this to us?!”
“We need new partners.” Marcy was sure.
Santana laughed. “But I love Britt and Jimi.”
“Apparently not that much.”
Santana frowned. “You don’t either.”
“I never said I did in the first place.”
“What are we going to do?” Kurt wanted a detailed script to follow.
“Get new partners! I’m not talkin' to myself!”
Karou was appalled. “You want to dump them?! I love her!”
“Better get to planning your honeymoon then.”
Karou grimaced. “”New” how?”
Santana felt sad. “What about our kids?”
“Be a new woman.” Marcy was sure this was the move. “Give those kids to their parents and live a free life.”
Santana was stricken. “You want me to give my kids away?!”
“Do you ever listen to anybody but yourself?”
Quinn walked over. “Guys, I know you’re being funny but-"
“Ain’t nobody laughin'!”
Quinn gaped. Then smiled. “Marcy, stop. You love Ellen. Tell her when the wedding is.”
“Goodbye.” Marcy rolled her eyes as she turned to leave.
“Wait!” Quinn was struck. “You don’t want to marry her?”
“When have I ever wanted to get married?”
Quinn did a double take as it felt like Marcy had slapped her. “But you have to want to get married. You love her.”
“When did I say that?”
“Marcy?!” Quinn shushed her baby sister. “She could hear you.”
“Do you hear me?”
Quinn could only breathe for a while. “Why aren’t you guys talking her out of this?”
“Little Diva think we need to get new partners.” Kurt was shaky.
Quinn’s eyes grew. “What?!”
Santana told her what Marcy had told them.
“You want to get rid of your kids?!”
Karou was shaken herself. “I wouldn’t have to get pregnant again.”
“Marcy, you love Mal! You’re not going to divorce him and leave your kids just to- do whatever!”
“I can show you better than I can tell you.” Marcy promised.
Quinn gulped. “Mercy?! Mercy!”
“She’s not going to change my mind.”
“Karen!”
“Shit…”
“Mercy! Karen!” Quinn yelled.
Both came over with the rest of the girls and Blaine. “What’s wrong?”
Quinn told it.
Mercedes’ eyes grew so big, they were all concerned. “No!”
Karen couldn’t believe this. “Marcy, you have to address your commitment issues.”
“I do not.” Marcy denied.
“You’re really willing to leave your girlfriend and your husband and your kids because-?”
“Because I don’t want to commit to anyone; yes.”
“And you three are going along with this; why?”
“She makes sense.” Karou crossed her arms.
“It does make sense.” Santana avoided Brittany’s stare.
“You don’t understand.” Kurt blushed.
“You’re damn right I don’t understand.” Karen couldn’t stand them. “I love Chase and as soon as he turns eighteen, we’re planning a lovely ceremony.”
“Whoo for you but I ain’t!” Marcy didn’t care what Karen said.
“You’re so unemotional! I know you think like a computer but be a human for once!”
“Humanity is deeply flawed…”
“Marcy, please don’t divorce Mal.” Paris worried.
“You can’t!” Carly panicked. “You’re couple goals! If you can’t make it, no one can!”
Marcy shrugged. “I guess no one can.”
“What is this about?” Mari felt hurt.
“Commitment and how we don’t want it.”
“Then why’d you marry Mal in the first place?”
“I was hopped up on pregnancy hormones.”
Mari deflated, unable to debate that.
“So you’re going to get divorced and stay in the same house?” Mercedes set her hands on her hips.
“He can have that hovel! I’m going somewhere far away!” Marcy had given this thought.
Which the others could tell and shook them deeply.
“I’m calling Laura!” Mercedes brought out her phone.
“I’m buying this expensive toilet water and leaving.” Marcy went to the counter to pay.
Kurt, Santana and Karou hurried to be by her.
“Laura?” Mercedes was glad to get her older sister. “It’s bad.”
“What’s going on, Mercy?” Laura asked.
“Marcy wants a divorce!”
“What?!”
“Yeah! She wants to leave the kids and divorce Mal! She said she’s leaving California!”
“Oh my-! Where is she?!”
“We’re at Fleury and she’s trying to leave now!”
“Get her over to my house!”
“Okay.” Mercedes felt relief. She hung up before turning to the others. “Laura’s going to fix this.”
“Why don’t they love us?” Brittany was so hurt.
“I’m not sure what’s going on but I know they love you.” Mercedes hugged the special blonde.
“No.” Marcy stated flatly.
“Please?!” Mercedes begged.
“No.”
“Come on, EmJay.” Karen pleaded. “You don’t mean this.”
“I do so!” Marcy could hear it in her head. She meant it.
“Please go to Laura’s.” Mercedes held her hands clasped together.
“Are Santana, Kurt and Karou being interrogated?”
“Yes!”
“Fine.” Marcy was sick of hearing them beg.
“Yes!” Mercedes hugged Marcy tightly but shortly. “Okay, you take Ellen-"
“I’m not talking to her.”
Mercedes deflated. “That’s fine.”
“Come on, Diaz.” Marcy grumped. “Ruining my damn day!”
Diaz was in shock but helped his boss and her girlfriend (?) out to his SUV.
“Guys?” Mercedes went to Santana and Karou. “Go to Laura’s.”
“Why?” Karou was suspicious.
“Because Marcy’s going.”
Karou huffed. “Fine. But I’m going home after to take a nap. All this feeling has me tired.”
Santana shrugged, not wanting to go home now. “Okay.”
Mercedes wrung the same promise out of Kurt before going to her big sister’s and oldest brother’s home. When she got there, she saw a lot of cars in the courtyard.
She and Clark went up to the door and rang the bell.
Their butler answered. “Welcome, Ma’am.”
“Thank you.” Mercedes came inside to take off her outside gear, including shoes.
He showed her to the biggest parlor and she saw most of their group was there.
The doorbell rang again as Mercedes went to hug Laura. “Laura?!”
“It’s okay, Mercy.” Laura hugged her back. “We’ll handle this.”
“Where is she? She left before I did.”
“I don’t know.”
Mal came in. “What’s going on?”
“Come sit.” Laura patted beside her.
“This seems suspect.” Marc raised his chin.
“Something’s up.” Mike concurred.
Finally Marcy showed up with Ellen, Santana with Brittany, Karou with Yuria and Kurt with Blaine. Ellen, Brittany and Yuria were crying while Blaine was fighting back his tears. Santana and Kurt had a hard time not being the same as Marcy and Karou were stoic.
“Baby, what’s wrong?” Mal went to Ellen.
“Are you okay?” Arnold went to Yuria.
Artie frowned at Brittany. “Who I gotta run over?”
“Guys?” Karofsky was totally confused. “What’s going on?”
Ellen was so overcome, she could only cry.
Brittany tried to speak but nothing made sense.
Yuria said nothing, just crying silently.
Blaine’s mouth worked but he stayed silent himself.
“Marcy, come here.” Laura beckoned her sister.
“No.” Marcy refused.
“Marcy!”
“No! I came so Bambi would stop cryin' but I’m not changing my mind and none of you can stop me!”
Laura knew force wouldn’t work but she was riled up. “Marcy,-!”
“Whoa! What’s going on?” Mal turned to Marcy, who looked away from him.
“Marcy, you can’t leave Mal-"
“I can so-!” Marcy snapped.
“What?!” Mal had whiplash. “What’s going on?!”
Laura didn’t have all the facts so she pushed Mercedes’ arm. Mercedes told everything.
Mal’s wide eyes stared at Marcy, who never interrupted their sister.
Artie’s jaw dropped.
Arnold had wide eyes himself.
Karofsky was silent, hurt beyond belief.
“Damn!” Puck couldn’t help himself.
Mercedes hit her husband. “Laura, you can’t let her leave!”
“She’s not.” Laura reassured her.
“My two functioning feet say I am.” Marcy spoke for herself.
Mal made a strange bird like sound in pain. “You want to divorce me?!”
“Yes.” Marcy told a half-truth.
“Damn…!” Mike whistled low.
Tina swatted him. “We can’t let you do this.”
“Let?” Marcy raised a brow.
Marc tucked his lips in before letting them go. “Come on, Moppet. You don’t want a divorce.”
“And you know how I feel; how?”
“Why?!” Mal demanded. “When did you start becoming unsatisfied?!”
“January 5, 2011.”
Mal did a double take at her having a date and then what date it was. “The day our twins were born?!”
“Yup.”
The others were blown away.
Santana and Karou realized how serious she was and blinked. Were they like that? Kurt had to take stock himself.
“You hate my kids?” Mal was devastated.
Marcy couldn’t answer that without more of this pouring out so she ran.
“Hey?!” He raced after her.
Karou ran behind them.
Santana and Kurt bolted, too.
Artie, Brittany, Ellen, Arnold, Yuria, Karofsky and Blaine tore off behind them.
Laura was gobsmacked. This was serious.
