PROLOGUE
A Promise Made
A Munich countryside estate, 1892.
The drafty nursery was cold and isolated. An infant with a tuft of wild, curly brown hair slept in a basket.
Beside her, a five-year-old girl knelt on the floorboards, her hands pressed together in prayer, just as she was taught by the Father.
“Please,” she whispered. “Send me a companion. A friend, so I won't be lonely anymore.”

Hundreds of miles away, in the deep shadows of a jagged mountain range, something ancient turned its head to the wind.
In the nursery, the candle snuffed out.
