Summary
And then she met Jason Grace on her second day at camp.
He looked ridiculous for someone destined to become a legionnaire, too big glasses constantly slipping down his nose, blond hair chopped into an almost military buzz cut that made him look younger than he was. The other recruits whispered that Lupa had favored him. Reyna couldn't imagine why.
He smiled too much. It was, in Reyna's opinon, decidedly not Roman of him. And even worse, he noticed everything.

Summary
“You are a traitor to Rome,” he spat.
Derek’s expression did not even flicker. “Sure am, Grace,” he said lightly. “What a blessing.”
Jason rolled his eyes. “The only blessing here is the fact that I have not killed you yet,” he said. “Deos non possum.”
The words came out harder than he meant them to.

Summary
Derek laughed. It was light. Casual. Wrong.
“Oh pardon me,” he said, tilting his head. “Ever graceful Son of Jupiter. But quite frankly I do not give a shit. Saturn is almost ready to destroy Camp Jupiter, and I intend on following him.”
Reyna coughed, one hand going to her throat as she staggered back slightly. Her vision blurred at the edges, but she forced herself to stay upright.
“No,” she rasped. “He is lying to you, Derek. He wants you to sacrifice yourself for him. You are better than that.”
Derek looked at her like she had said something naive. Then he smiled.
“You?” he said. “Talking about being better than that? Were you better than that when you killed your father?”
The words hit like a physical blow.

Summary
“What if he is right?” she asked. Jason looked up immediately.
Reyna still did not meet his eyes. “What if… what if the gods do lose?” she continued quietly. “What are we going to do, Jase?”
Silence filled the room. Jason’s jaw tightened.
“They cannot lose,” he said firmly. “They have won every other time. They will win now. They have to.”

Summary
“He left you alone, Jason,” she says, softer now, but no less firm. “Hylla… Hylla would have never done that to me.”
Her voice catches slightly on her sister’s name, and Jason notices it immediately. It is small, but it shifts something in the air between them, like a crack forming in something neither of them is fully willing to look at directly.
Jason raises an eyebrow, not out of disbelief exactly, but out of something heavier. “Where is Hylla now?” he asks. “She made the choice to leave you. Just like Derek left me.”
The words come out sharper than he intends. More like a cut than a statement. He feels it the second they land.
Reyna goes still.

Summary
Jason glances at her. “I do not really know what I am doing anymore,” he admits. “I keep thinking about Derek. About how fast things changed. And I keep wondering how many people I actually know, or if I just think I do.”
Reyna walks a little closer, stopping beside him rather than in front of him. “That is a dangerous thought,” she says calmly. “Because if you let it spiral, you start trusting no one.”
Jason huffs. “Kind of already feels like I should not trust anyone.”
Reyna raises an eyebrow. “Even me?”
That makes him pause. He looks at her properly then. “No,” he says quickly. “Not you. That is not what I meant.”

Summary
Gwen, however, looks unimpressed by all of it.
“That’s not the point,” she says, turning back to Jason with more focus again. “Jason, I was there when you told Reyna ‘forever and always.’ Do you seriously not remember that? Are you really just gonna act like that doesn't mean anything?”
Jason goes still.
The room feels tighter suddenly, like the air itself is waiting for him to answer correctly. His fingers press harder into the edge of the table, grounding himself there because otherwise he is not sure what he would be holding onto. He does remember it. That is the problem. He remembers it clearly enough that it makes his chest feel worse every time he thinks about it.
“I didn’t go back on anything I said,” he says finally, but even he hears how strained it sounds.
Gwen lets out a short, frustrated laugh. “Then why does it feel like you did?”
- or jason gets a reality check.
