Pilots didn’t retire, often. All bang no whimper, lived like a rockstar until they played it all out on the stage. And Eddie saw it in Steve, in the way Robin watched him sometimes.
Steve was a meteor, a flash of light, quick burst and gone. Eddie had known there was no getting over him either.

“I’m not dead, am I?” He says to the ocean. She puts a careful hand on his shoulder, just out of sight so he can’t see the way her fingers go thin and dark at the edges. It always scares people, her hands.
“Not yet.”
He rubs his face, rolls his shoulders forwards and claps his thighs. “Well, better odds than I’ve had in a while, gotta say.” He laughs as though this is funny. “Eddie’s going to be pissed I didn’t make it back for dinner.”

Summary
Mom is smiling again, she’s looking at the buttons on his shirt and fussing with them to lay the lapels flat. He’s not sure he can feel it. Is he excited? Nervous? Horrified by the slow conveyor belt he’s found himself on? He can’t argue with them, he’s fourteen and he knows what the world is like, but that had always been something far away. He has basketball tryouts in two weeks, he’s starting High School.
“Wonderful,” his dad sighs, clapping his hands together. “Well, I’m sure you understand that we told him it would be our honor to have our son join up, and that he would make us proud.” There’s an implicit ‘understood’ there, a steeliness behind the words. Steve instinctively straightens up like he always does at that voice.
“Of course, dad,” he smiles, dead behind the eyes, looking somewhere else. “Sounds great.”

Years before, before Eddie and before Robin, before he'd nearly died and miraculously returned. Before Billy and before the hole that made his thoughts sink down deeper to where almost no one could find, Steve had met Jonathan.
The problem really had been, the way it always happened to Steve, that he hadn’t only met him the once.
