He was wearing the usual attire she remembered minus the lab coat. The most striking thing about him was that he appeared healthy and even slightly tan. “What the hell?” she cried.

“Apparently so.” He placed the box on the coffee table and sat on the couch next to her. “When I initiate the avatar, it loads according to my specifications. There’s been instances where it stutters or the sensation feedback doesn’t work correctly, but this is the first time my appearance has been affected.” He sighed in annoyance. “This is just a wonderful addition to my day.”

He found it all fascinating.

She kneeled on the ground next to him and gasped. The fact that his mood could affect the avatar’s appearance was common knowledge, but what she saw almost made her sick.
He looked sickly again, but this time he had a stump in place of his right arm. Instead of flesh, there was metal from when Arachnamechs treated his wound using parts. It was the look in his eyes that got to her the most though. They were dull and focused on something far away. For the past few days, he was unusually quiet and would frequently stare into space. Of course she understood why. However, she had no idea what his reasons were when he decided on using the avatar. Seeing the stump must have triggered a flashback. Finding him in such a state wasn’t anything new for her, but now that they were a couple, seeing him that way broke her heart.

She was so completely genuine in her intentions and feelings that he couldn’t believe how he ever could’ve possibly doubted her. No, the issue was never with her. It had always been himself. She was always so patient with him. It was time that he showed her just how serious he was.
