Shen Wei’s hand, still holding his brush pen, pauses over the lab report he’d been looking over. “Hello, Zhao Yunlan,” he murmurs, and feels more than hears the answering sound of Zhao Yunlan’s voice rumbling through his whole body.

Summary
Inside, Zhao Xinci lets go of Zhao Yunlan’s shoulder and turns to face him with his arms crossed over his chest. The standard Disappointed Father posture, scowl and all. “Yunlan,” he says, “did you think the way you handled this case was appropriate?”
A few years ago, Zhao Yunlan would have lashed out right back. But college had wised him up to what his dad gets out of these little talks, and this first week as SID chief had been a crash course in paying attention to the subtle dynamics of every conversation. Now, he takes note of the way their body language can still be seen by their colleagues through the wood panels, how their conversation will carry if it gets too loud. Now, Zhao Yunlan knows to register the way his father positioned them so only Zhao Yunlan’s face can be seen from the dining room.
