Summary
The last time Charles remembered seeing Jordan was right after he’d gotten out of his car after sprint qualifying. She’d been standing next to Max in the garage, holding his hand and waving at Charles when she’d spotted him. Naturally he’d waved back before walking off to talk to some reporters waving him over for a quick interview, wanting to get over with it as soon as possible so he could get back to his family.
The last time Max recalled seeing Jordan was right after Charles had gotten out of the car. He’d been wrapped up in a conversation with Charles’ race engineer, Bryan, when Jordan had tugged on his sleeve to ask if she could go over to see her other dad. Naturally Max had said yes without looking properly. Charles had been standing right there, just a couple feet away from them. Not much could go wrong, right?

Sorry!” Max rubbed a hand across his face, shooting an apologetic smile to Jordan, but she didn’t seem too impressed, the raised eyebrow staying right where it was. “I mean, he has a habit of ‘adopting’ fully grown men that do not need to be adopted because, as previously mentioned, they are fully grown men.”

“Ich fühle mich nicht gut…” She mumbled, her lips barely moving.
“Yes, sweetheart, I-I can tell-” Max hastily kissed her forehead, the salty taste of sweat sticking to his lips like a mocking reminder. “I think you’re sick.”

“I’m Jordan, it’s nice to meet you. Officially.” Jordan quickly shook the hand he offered her, before zapping through the crowd and right to her dad.
They went straight to the car. Max didn’t say a word until they were on the highway, so Jordan didn’t say anything either. She didn’t tell him about the man either, somehow guessing that if he wasn’t really interested in karting, he also wouldn’t care about this Jos that wanted to help her.
Or: Jordan desperately needs a trainer, so why would she refuse her grandfather trying to help her?

“There’s so many issues with that. Beginning with you calling our possible future project kid an ‘it’ and ending with the big mystery of how we’re going to get someone to give us their child ‘for a bit’.”
“Luckily,” Oscar sighed heavily and pulled Lando in by his wrist, tucking him firmly between the mattress and his chest. “We are pretty close to these t’o guys that have a daughter and would definitely be glad to have a couple days off during the t’o week break coming up.”

And Charles, the poor, hardworking, single father that he was, had to deal with it all by himself. He wouldn’t have had to if Max and that weak immune system of his hadn’t decided to get sick on a race weekend, leaving him to take Jordan with him on his own.

Summary
The car finally hit something hard and solid. The impact was so brutal it shook through Charles’ entire body, making him violently surge forward. The seatbelt dug into his chest and stomach like knives and, despite his best efforts to keep his arms crossed over his chest, one of them slipped and bashed against the dashboard. And, last but not least, he hit his head on something, the impact hard enough to send him into darkness.
The last thing that went through his mind was how fucking scared his husband and daughter had to be and Charles wished for nothing more than to promise them that he was fine.

Charles eyed her wearily as she approached, barely daring to take the phone when she held it out to him, but when she continuously brought it closer to his face, he eventually snatched it from her hand.
“Hello?” She heard Charles ask as she walked out the kitchen, then after a short pause, he whined, “Oh non, laisse-moi tranquille!”
