They called it a silent death. And Steve could see now how apt the descriptor was. His aching limbs flailed desperately, even as his mind knew there was no escape. Water had never felt so heavy. So cold. So lonely.
His head knocked against the ceiling of the jet. No way out. Not this time. This time there was only a metal coffin filled with too many bombs and one heartbroken man. And water. So much icy water. His shield glinted prettily beneath him. Still as red, white, and blue as it had always been. It would outlast him so easily. And that was okay. It was a nice shield. He’d been a nice shield. Right up until he hadn’t been. Right up until Bucky had slipped through his fingers.

Steve pauses for a moment and suddenly he’s somewhere else. The warmth of the water pressing in around him, the sun shining down and illuminating the den he grew up in. The forests of kelp and the shining scales of his kind.
“I…I want to go home.”
Bucky exhales shakily against the back of his neck, “You don’t mean Brooklyn, do you?”
She rolls over in his arms to look him in the eye, “I mean close to Brooklyn.”
Bucky nods slowly, “Okay. Then that’s what we’ll do. We’ll get you home. I’ll get a place near the shore, visit you every day.”
Steve bites his lip, teeth just barely too sharp, “I want you to come with me.”
Bucky freezes, considering, “...How?”
Steve shrugs, “Magic. Same way I got legs. You’d be…Christ alive, you’d be stunning in scales.”
