Summary
Standing before him, just inches away, was a young man. He couldn't have been more than twenty, speaking haltingly with the vendor in broken Italian, his voice unsure, filled with pauses and missteps. It was obvious he wasn’t a native speaker—his accent dragged unfamiliar vowels, and his verbs were awkward, like someone who had learned the language from textbooks rather than the streets.
But it wasn’t the voice that froze Thomas.
The boy was beautiful. His black, gleaming hair caught the last golden rays of the evening sun that still bathed part of the square. That soft light gave him an almost unreal glow, as if he didn’t fully belong in this world. Thomas felt a twist in his stomach as he compared it, involuntarily, to his own thinning blond hair.
It was then that the young man, noticing the light collision, looked up—and their eyes met.
or: Thomas and Vincent meet in Rome as young priests, where they share a strange immediate connection that will mark their lifes.

Summary
He would have recognized that face anywhere in the world, in any crowd, at any hour of the day or night.
He had seen it in dreams for thirty years, recalled it in his quietest prayers, imagined it in the halls of the Vatican or among the faithful. Thirty years of absence branded into his memory like fire.
And now it was here.
Like divine punishment.
or: Thomas and Vincent reunite 30 years later at the conclave, after an agonizing breakup.
