“I could just put an arrow in your back while you’re walking away,” Katniss said quietly. “Wait out the others.”
Clove turned around, holding her arm close to her side as Katniss had instructed her to. Despite everything—the sling, the blood—she moved with a kind of savage elegance, like she hadn’t heard a word of the threat. She didn’t look back, like she wasn’t afraid of anything Katniss might do.
“I’m waiting,” she said, vanishing into the trees like she already knew Katniss would follow.

Katniss lunged toward the stove, snatching the pan off the heat just before it caught fire.
Prim squeaked and ducked behind her, giggling. “Oops.”
“That’s all you have to say?” Katniss muttered—half-laughing, half-flushed.
Clove leaned against the counter with a smirk. “She’s clearly your sister. Can’t even finish breakfast without turning it into a dramatic performance. Or a fire hazard.”
“Very funny. Shouldn’t you have been paying attention too? You’re the supervising adult here.” Katniss bumped her hip.
“Little Everdeen assured me she had it under control.” Clove caught her around the waist before she could escape, voice low against her ear. “And someone was being a bit distracting.”
Katniss stilled, breath catching—not from pain this time, but from the way Clove’s fingers lingered. From the way her words landed like a promise.

Katniss finally leaned forward and kissed Clove soundly, long enough to make her forget her mission. Clove hummed against her mouth. Tasting her lips, the traces of cake before licking hotly into her mouth.
A tug, Prim seized the moment to bolt, cackling, cake plate in hand.
Katniss broke the kiss and stared. “Prim!” Her little sister bolted with Katniss' cake. "Get back here! Don't you dare-"
Prim was already halfway across the room, waving with her fork. “Mother!” she yelled. “Katniss is threatening me-”
Katniss groaned. “If she thinks hiding behind our mother will save her from my wrath if she eats my piece, she has another thing coming.”
Clove wiped frosting off Katniss’ lips. “Only after I get a kiss.”
