“It seemed important,” the man said. He held it out. “Here.”
Reverently, with trembling hands he couldn’t hide, he took it. The weight was familiar—the curve of the ring, the coarseness of the leather, the small chip he brushed his thumb over instinctively. Instantly, he was remembering him, his smile, his laugh, the warmth of his touch; he, existing, as brilliant as the sun itself.
“Did you come from the mainland?”
He swallowed with some difficulty. He smoothed over the chip again. “Yeah.”
The man was quiet, for longer this time, some battle occurring inwardly. Then he asked, hesitantly, “What happened?”
