Summary
10 August 1792. France is on the defensive after a punishing summer of war, and the Duke of Brunswick and the Austrians are bearing down on Paris, with the threat to burn it to the ground if any harm comes to Louis XVI and the royal family. Old alliances crumble and new ones form as the city grows more restive under rising prices and scant food. Then Paris awakens to the sound of alarm bells being rung across the city. But is the danger coming from outside the city, or from within?
Two young Jacobins — one a law student trying to control a collapsing situation, the other a multilingual scribe who slips between factions — are forced into a vicious choice: stay with their section as the city arms itself, or break away toward the Legislative Assembly where words may matter as much as pikes and muskets. A decision made quickly and without consent will scatter them in different directions before dawn and leaves something fractured in its wake.
Now the city is arming itself to the sound of rising drums, and blood will be spilled before the sun sets for another day.
