But this is fiction. Noir novel type. And in this kind of novels the hero usually fights against a corrupt establishment, or against an equally corrupt world. Always without faltering, just because you have to do the right thing. Nothing more and nothing less. -

And maybe that was part of the issue. Because people weren’t gentle with Richard the way Camille was, people didn’t bother to look him in the eyes and believe in his ability to be a better person than he was, or that maybe right now he could be considered a good man.
People didn’t strive as hard as Camille did to make him feel welcome and at home back at his actual home, and there was a strange dissonance associated with that. When he remembers his home, the sensations are what he misses, but when he thinks of Saint Marie, it’s the people he loves.
or, Richard comes out as trans and it leads to quite a bit more.
