Summary
Everything Changes in the time it takes for Dick to pick up the phone.
Jason had been tortured by the Joker.
Dick runs back to Gotham, back in the city he grew up in to help his family heal.
And to make thing worse someone is following him.
“You didn’t come home last night.”
Dick jumps at the voice, nearly dropping the juice, surprised to see Bruce standing in the kitchen staring at him with a furrowed brow.
“Hey B.” Dick greets, setting the juice on the counter. “Are you okay? You’re not normally up yet?”
“Why didn’t you come home last night?” Bruce repeats, ignoring Dick’s question. “Did something happen?”
Dick opens his mouth, about to tell Bruce all about his run in with Tim, to ask if he’d heard anything about the Drakes recently. Then he takes a good look at Bruce and the question dies in his throat.
Dark circles carved deep into his face, scruffy unshaven face, gaunt cheeks, and worry clear in his dull eyes. Bruce had been worried about Dick, worried another son had just disappeared without a word. The guilt felt like it could swallow him whole.
“Patrol ran late.” Dick lies. “I ended up crashing at one of the safe houses.”

Dick had always been good with kids; had always been the first one to scoop a kid into his arms. So, really, he wasn't bothered that he ended up being the main caretaker of the family behind Alfred. Really, he wasn’t.
Okay, so maybe he cared, but only when people called Bruce a father.
Maybe there was always a deep-seated grudge around Bruce being seen as the parental unit of the Bat Family. Maybe.
