Summary
She's whiter than sin and beat to hell, blood crusted up under her nose and around her mouth when he gently lifts the poorly stitched together sack up and away from her face with hands that don't feel like his own.
All of maybe seven or eight, if he had to guess, kids somehow looking both younger and older than they're meant to these days.
She looks like a baby to him, her features all soft despite being so damn thin.
With an odd sense off detachment, he rolls up her sleeves and checks both arms before moving onto her legs in search of any sign that's she's been infected, but the tell-tale climb of Cordyceps is nowhere to be found, no bite mark to mock him. Not on her back that's a swirl of blackened bruising and bumpy spine or on the hollow of her stomach that's just as tender and hard to look at, the cut of her ribs striking.
There ain't a thing on her outside of a list of hurts that's a mile long and etched into her skin.

Joel stumbles on Ellie at the bottom of a pile of dead bodies meant for the burn pits, one shallow breath and a steady heartbeat is all it takes to undo him. -

Summary
Joel doesn’t remember anything beyond the outpost.
All he knows is that he was there, he lost consciousness and then he was all the way back in 2010. He woke up to his old, shitty apartment in Boston and the overwhelming feeling that he'd lost something.
Ellie. All those years leading up to and after finding her. Seemingly erased. Or yet to happen.
He doesn’t know how.
But he knows he has to find her.
OR
Joel is somehow transported into the past, well before any of the events of the Last of Us Season One take place. Armed with the knowledge of everything that happened the first time around, he makes it his mission to find four year old Ellie, reunite his family and find a safe place for them in the Wyoming wilderness. Once he establishes himself as Jackson's leader, he gets to work giving Ellie the childhood and the family she deserves.

Summary
Ever since Sarah... well, ever since Sarah ten years ago, Joel's stayed as far away from kids as he can. Just the sight of one is practically enough to send him into a panic attack.
But then Tommy signs them up for a contracting job at a high school as a favor to an old army buddy.
And then there's a little girl in the front office, who somehow appears in the coffee shop Joel visits because the motel's coffee machine is shit.
Most damning is when Joel goes in to do some work at three in the morning and that same goddamn little girl is asleep in his construction zone and, when he wakes her up, says she's homeless.
Next thing he knows, she's asleep in his motel bed and he's filing foster parent paperwork.
What the fuck just happened?
(Foster parent AU! Featuring Joel Trying His Best And FailingTM, Ellie annoying local man and his friends & family into adopting her, and Tess/Joel as a lil treat for the masses.)

Summary
Joel stares at her. Her eyes are bright, so youthful it hurts, but with a shadow of maturity that feels uncomfortable on her juvenile face. She’s still waiting expectantly, still dripping a puddle onto the floor as she grips the grab rail with one hand, fingers jittery against her jeans on the other. Who is letting her ride public transport alone like this? Who is letting her get lost and have to ask a man she doesn't know for help?
Joel forces down the thoughts racing through his head, rapid beat to a butterfly’s wings. This girl is none of his goddamn business.
