The strings holding Taunie up snap, and she collapses against Paxton’s chest with a gasping cry. He fumbles as he catches her, swearing under his breath as panic shoots through him.
“Shit— okay, I’m here, I’m here, I’ve got you,” Paxton whispers it like a mantra as he gets his arms around Taunie, as tight as he possibly can without hurting her.
“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t— I didn’t think it would h-hit me that hard,” Taunie sobs, muffled against his clothes.
“It’s okay,” Paxton whispers. “Just let it all out, Taun.”
