Tommy startles when he looks up from his carving—a new hobby, picked up at Maria’s indication that he’s been getting a little too doting—to see Ellie silently staring at him from the doorway.
“Hello,” he ventures, already considering where he can acquire bells for the front door to prevent future situations such as these.
“You’re not Joel,” she accuses, to Tommy’s amusement—it’s almost as though she wants him to apologize.
“I’m not nearly so old,” he confirms, but she looks genuinely confused, glancing around the room as if he might have his brother hidden on top of the bookshelf.
