Kaveh is not there when Alhaitham arrives at Lambad's Tavern at 5:59 sharp.
Alhaitham sits in their usual booth alone until the tavern closes, drawing concerned and pitied whispers from patrons and wait staff alike. It's clear that, despite his fame and status, their Acting Grand Sage has been stood up by whoever was supposed to be joining him for dinner and drinks.
Kaveh is not in his room either when Alhaitham returns home, confused and more than a little annoyed at being left alone for an evening meant to be shared.
The moon is high in the sky, Sumeru City is sleeping peacefully, and yet there is still no Kaveh.

That is why, when the Matra informed him of his roommate's failure to appear at a conference that morning, Alhaitham knew right away that it was no ordinary occurrence.

Before, Kirari had always been ambivalent to the colour red. She had never bled, but Sayaka often came in with cuts and scrapes forcing open her flesh like red teeth. This one was from an unruly student, she said, that one from an unlucky fall — but it was alright, she hardly felt them anyway.
Standing at the tower’s ledge, there was another red eye torn from Sayaka’s skin. It was on her forehead, bleeding like the confession from her mouth. Kirari had wanted to pluck the wound like a flower, and with it Sayaka’s mouth.
But Sayaka had chosen the wrong door. Kirari loved the colour now. She wanted it to dye her waters and poison her fish.
