“Did I do something wrong?” Shane asks, his voice cracking on the last word. He detests being vulnerable and asking for reassurance, even from people he’s comfortable with. And he would probably describe this situation as literally anything but comfortable.
He bites his lip and hopes the blood he draws will distract him from the stinging in his eyes.
“No, Hollander,” Rozanov answers. “It was not you.”
“Okay, well, if it’s not me, will you at least look at me?” Shane snaps. “You don’t kiss me all night, except for that one time in that disgusting fucking bathroom, you don’t want to talk to me in bed, and now you won’t even look at me anymore. How am I supposed to think that that’s not about me? Do I really mean that fucking little to you?”
Or: What if Shane actually sends the text in Vegas?

Hauling his bag over his shoulder, Shane stared around the room, one more glance at the men he’d given the best years of his career to.

“For fucks sake Ilya, will you just let it go?”
“No, I will not.” Ilya rounded on him, and in a single second Shane was being spun around to face him, hands firm and a little tight as they clasped his skin, fingernails pressing into his forearms. “You passed out Shane.”
Shane shook his head, eyes burning as he found an interesting spot on the ceiling.
“No, listen to me,” Ilya shook him. “You are stressing about something, you are barely eating, you are exercising too much. You FUCKING FAINTED in the gym today. Do you not get that? You were down, out completely for several seconds, if Luca hadn’t found you....”
They stared at each other for a few moments, Ilya’s chest heaving, eyes shining bright with something heavy as Shane just glared back at him.

Shane joined the Centaurs a few months back, and god he loves this team. But the eyes of the Hockey world are sitting there, waiting, fingers at the ready to accuse him of losing his edge, now that he can be distracted by Ilya. The weight of it all has him scrambling to make everything right again, to give him back the control that’s steadily slipping away.

“We can’t be seen together,” Shane hisses. A bottle girl parades a flaming champagne bottle above their heads and sidles between them, blocking Ilya’s wide, frantic eyes for a moment.
Ilya crosses his arms, his voice breathy. “You know, if you wanted to be treated like shit, Hollander, you should have just said.”
Shane freezes. “My relationship is none of your business.”
“Really?” Ilya questions. A vein pops out of his neck, a greenish wire that looks purple under the strobe lights. “I saw it. She hit you.”

Where, months after Shane's post-tuna melt panic, Shane and Ilya lock eyes across the dancefloor - only this time, Shane’s “new girlfriend” isn’t Rose, and she’s nowhere near as kind.
