Summary
He isn’t sure how long it’s been, the moments he’s been waiting, how long he’s been aching and hurting and smiling all the same. He’ll wait forever, he considers, if that’s what is asked of him. Or even if it isn’t-- he’s not really a clever man, after all. He may hold a title and he may hold the respect of some, but when he sits on his engawa alone the only thing left of him is his foolishness. A shadow that only the sea understands.

Summary
“Let no one who loves be called altogether unhappy. Even love unreturned has its rainbow.” ― J.M. Barrie
-
When Ginko passes through the village by the sea, he finds his friend playing host to a strange and unknown mushi. It sits like a crown of flowers upon the doctor's head, and like a bed of thorns inside his chest. Adashino, for his part, will never speak of what nests in his ribs, and he follows Ginko in search of answers he may already have.

Summary
“What we do see depends mainly on what we look for. ...Though we may all look at the same things, it does not all follow that we should see them.” ― John Lubbock, The Beauties of Nature and the Wonders of the World We Live In
“I told you it was a good cafe,” Tanyuu says to Adashino's skepticism. She takes another sip of her iced drink and mirrors his contented hum. “They do a lot of custom orders.”
Adashino considers, taking another sip of his coffee. “Like a Starbucks secret menu?”
His own comment gives him pause, as he realises he doesn’t actually know what this cafe is called. Or if they even have a normal menu. Actually, if he considers, he’s not even sure he knew this cafe existed before he stepped into it, before Tanyuu brought him in. He turns over his shoulder and looks through the front window, frowning, tracing the snow outside and the street he knows. The street he’s walked down dozens of times before— he’s sure of it. And yet he has no idea where he is, what the street is named, nor does he have any memory of following Tanyuu here.
"What is this place, really?"

Summary
“That you’ll never share this, of course,” Adashino says drunkenly, pressing a finger over his lips. He sounds delighted. “You can’t tell.”
Questioning his better judgement, Ginko nods slowly. “I won’t. I promise.”
Adashino smiles, a picture of inebriated, innocent glee. “Good. I’m only telling you because I trust you, you know. I need someone to tell, but it wouldn’t be good if you found out.”
The mushi-shi turns back, slowly, his eyebrows pinching. “If I… found out,” he echoes. His mouth is far too dry.
Adashino nods in return. “Yes, it’s the most important part.” He smiles, far too broad, too kind, too intoxicated. Too open. "You can't ever know this secret."
