Percy went silent again.
Annabeth watched his entire expression change.
The teasing disappeared first. His smile faded into something quieter as his eyes settled on the little silver bar. He leaned closer without seeming to realize he was doing it, one hand braced against the mattress beside her hip. From this distance, Annabeth could see the faint freckles scattered across his nose from the summer sun, the little crease between his eyebrows as he concentrated, the way his curls brushed his forehead when he ducked his head.
His eyes traced the exposed skin above the waistband of her shorts before returning to the piercing.
Annabeth suddenly became very aware of every breath she took.
“You've seen jewelry before, right?”
“Shh.”
Her eyebrows raised up. “Did you just shush me?”
“I'm concentrating.”
“On what?”
Percy looked up. The answer was written so plainly across his face that Annabeth almost regretted asking.
“You.”
(or, Annabeth gets her belly-button pierced as a gift to him for his birthday, and Percy actually can't handle it)
