Summary
Thousands of years before Ichigo Kurosaki and his friends were born, before the Seireitei, there was the Land of Five Kingdoms. A land filled with constant conflict as the various kingdoms vie for supremacy. Noble champions duel in displays of skill and masters of magic wield Ki to decimate platoons of soldiers. This was the status quo for war as long as the histories record.
Everything changed with the newest revolution in warfare. "Soul Cutters," "Blades of Heaven," "Ki Blades;" Known by many names, the new spirit-iron-forged swords allow individual warriors to match battalions. All kingdoms claim to have invented them, but what matters now is they all have them.
Each kingdom recruits their own wielders, a force to wield against the others. In many places, a recruit's nobility is ignored in favor of taking anyone with sufficient spiritual energy to wield the new blades. In the Tanodonte Kingdom, the blades are called "Zanpakuto" and their wielders form the Thirteen "Court Guard Squads," named for the first duty assigned to them: the protection of the capital.
Members are drawn from all over the kingdom, and put through grueling training. Will it be enough? Or will they fall to the threats they face?
