They were too late. The Mark of Mastery Exam ended in disaster and Riku is left horrified with the conclusion that he had failed to protect his closest friend.
Except...after his Dive to revive his friend, and Riku himself lacking the memory of his final, desperate Dive, Sora is still there, completely unchanged. Blue-eyed and energetic, looking for all the world as if nothing had gone wrong at all. When tests showed no signs of possession, Riku wondered if maybe they had fought off the worst, and Sora remained true to himself even under pressure from overwhelming darkness. It wouldn’t have been the first time that he managed to beat the odds.
