"Oh, please tell me you haven’t had an argument with your mother in front of the whole family".
"Worse" Lisa muttered, suddenly looking very interested in the floor. "I lied".
"You? Detective Sergeant Lisa Swain, pillar of truth and justice, told a fib? Colour me intrigued. What did you say?"
"I told them I was already dating someone."
Carla let out a sharp bark of laughter. "No! Brilliant. Who’s the lucky imaginary lady?"
"Mum went into absolute overdrive. She didn't even pause for breath. She immediately declared that if I’ve been seeing someone, they have to come on the family holiday. I started panicking, trying to make up excuses – said she was busy, said she hated the beach, said she had a terrible phobia of flying. But they wouldn't have it. Mum was relentless. She demanded to know her name".
"And? What did you tell her?”
"I said Carla"

“Carla Barlow, Peter Barlow’s wife.” DI Thompson steps away from the board so everyone can see the photo she’s pinned up.
Alright, admittedly, she’s more than just quite pretty for a wrong’un. She’s bloody stunning; she’s smiling in the photo, her perfect white teeth standing out more than anything else. Her cheekbones are high and sharp, clearly defined and, quite frankly, striking. She doesn’t look like the type of woman that would be involved in something like this, but neither had Becky when she’d left the house every morning in her PC uniform and her harness.
Looks can be deceiving, she’s learnt that much for free.
(It wasn’t free, it almost cost her her sanity.)
(Still might. Jury’s still out on that one.)
“Swain.” DI Thompson stops her from spiralling again. “This is where you come in.”
Her jaw almost hits the floor. First day, doesn't even know where the flippin’ bathrooms are yet, but apparently she’s about to have a pivotal role in an ongoing investigation. Great…
