Summary
Thomas Greene would take that memory to the grave.
The memory of that bat coming down on his best friend's leg. The memory of two grown men grabbing his beaten, thrashing body, dragging him off and away, giving Thomas no time to look at his face for what very well could have been the last time.
The face that sent butterflies swarming through Thomas's stomach and spewing from his lips, into the world around him like a forbidden song. He'd run for the hills to catch them, and when he did, he'd hide them away in a rusted tin can. Yes, he'd hide them. He'd hide those beautiful, disgusting, violent, gentle, pure, blood-stained butterflies, and with them, he'd hide these feelings he felt from everyone, himself included. That way, the pain on his face at this moment would not make itself known. So he wouldn't be next.
