Jean’s partner gets dumped at his feet when he’s thirteen and Nathaniel is twelve. Jean never does find out where exactly Nathaniel came from with a broken nose and a swollen eye. Knowing what he does now it could have been anything from him running his stupid mouth to Tetsuji or a parting gift from his father.

It’s the hoodie that Andrew notices first, bright white and loose with a fluffy hood pulled over auburn hair. The only spots of color being the pink pocket on the belly and the pink insides of the two floppy ears attached to the hood.
Next is the thighs, lean, honey brown and peppered with freckles. Andrew’s eyes catch on a thin white scar slicing through the soft skin of his left inner thigh. Andrew can’t see any pants. Is he not wearing pants?

Summary
Neil has spent the last 2 years numb and floating through life in a drugged haze, forced to run from his father with his mother since he was 8 years old. At least he was with his mother, now he's on his own in the suffocatingly small town that is Millport but of course it wasn't quite small enough.
