Summary
Once upon a time there was a bitter old woman who lived by herself in a dark hut in a dark wood in a dark, cold land. She had lived so long alone by herself that, even though she detested other people, she began to long for a child to be born to her to keep her company and to share her long, lonely life.
This old woman knew powerful magics, so one night she called upon the darkness itself to grant her wish and give her a son. Nine months later it came to be, and a lovely, dark-haired baby was born to her. She named him Alexander, but most often she called him Darkling.
