Summary
Dennis and Robby's paths cross at a barrel racing competition where Dennis is competing, it doesn't take long to realize they don't want to part ways
-
“I know you grew up on a farm but you’re not really what I expected.”
“Oh yea! And what did you expect.” The young doctor said.
“I don’t know, I knew you were a farm boy, but I thought you were more runt of the litter I guess… sorry that’s mean, I don’t know more hang out with the animals, pet the cows, I guess. I didn’t expect you to be like a real cowboy, hat and all. I don’t know… sorry.” Robby could feel his face was turning red.
“No I get it, and I was… you know runt of the litter, at least till I got into barrel racing, I was better than my brothers, really the only thing I was better at, so after that they let me help out more, then I became more cowboy I guess, rather than farm boy.” Dennis said.
“So, what do you think of cowboys?” He said after a minute, looking at Robby with that fuckass grin again. He didn’t even hesitate.
“I really like them… Haven’t seen one that wasn’t hot as shit.” He said sipping his beer.

Summary
When Dennis agreed to cover shifts for Dr. Mohan on the night shift, he didn't think he would ever end up here. Kidnapped from the ambulance bay, his head pounding, and having to save the life of a man with limited medical supplies. That was supposed to be it. Somehow, he finds himself snatched up off a sidewalk, in the stables, in front of his home. There were no sacred spaces when you proved your worth.
In the middle of it all, Dennis is confused by the way Dr. Robby and Dr. Abbot are circling him. The way they'd reach out and brush their fingers against his skin. The way they made sure he ate, got rest, and stayed safe. It made him ache with something he hadn't felt in a long time.

Summary
“If I don’t come back you get a swingin’ bachelor pad”
These words, said so casually and humorously, freeze Dennis to his very core. When he can finally move again it’s almost on autopilot as his thoughts spiral, and through the ringing in his ears he hears a voice.
“You okay, kid?”
It’s the gruff voice of one Jack Abbot who takes one look at him and drags him to an empty stairwell. Dennis doesn’t even wait to ensure they're alone before he spills everything to a grim Jack.
Jack Abbot has known that Robby’s sabbatical was a herald of doom from the way he has been acting throughout the day but seeing the haunted look in Dennis’ face as he relays what is basically a confession of his intentions on not returning is when Jack decides to put his foot down.
-
Or Jack Abbot enlists the help of Dennis in doing everything in their power to stop Robby from going on his sabbatical. With the clock ticking and only a few hours left for them to act they both throw caution to the wind.
Basically, Jack flirts with a “shy” and “wide-eyed innocent” Dennis all over the Pitt so that Robby’s protective instincts can overpower his need to fuck off to who knows where.

Summary
When Whitaker finds out that Dr. Robby has been riding to work without a helmet, he begins to suspect Robby isn’t planning to come back from his sabbatical. Robby all but confirms it when he hands over the keys to his house.
After Whitaker calls Robby’s bluff and brings in the cavalry (i.e. Abbot and Dana) to stop him from hurting himself, he has no idea what the future holds. Worse, if Robby will ever speak to him again.
Or: Slow(ish) burn Hucklerobby getting-together fic, starting after the events of s2e09 “3:00 P.M.” and diverging from there. Featuring angst, yearning, Jack Abbot being Robby’s unlicensed therapist, Trinity Santos doing her best, and gratuitous references to the great state of Nebraska.
Rating changes from M to E between chapter 1 and chapter 2. Epilogue TBD.
