It's been years since the war ended, and the day that Murtagh and Thorn last spoke to anyone from Alagaesia. The mountains of the north are behind them, and the heavy sun hangs high in the hot sky above the canyons to the northwest. They've made a living traveling through the villages and larger cities lying outside of the world they used to live in, but it’s been too long since they've been away. They were happy, relying only on each other and the strangers they encountered, but Murtagh had a lingering feeling that wouldn't go away. They were in danger.

Summary
Murtagh's bones split with a sickening crack, but the sound was swallowed by the young man's screams. His skin itched and burned as his flesh tore and reformed under it. His eyes stung. Death would have been preferred to this. But, death was not a luxury he was allowed. His throat felt as though it was on fire and his mouth tasted of blood, the metallic smell filling his nostrils. Through his clouded eyes, he could see the stone floors pooling with it. Red seeping into every crevasse. Red filling his eyes. Red covering his skin. Red as a rose. Red as the baby dragon who had stood before him minutes ago. Red as the small, infant creature whose own wails had silenced at some point. Red as Thorn.
Or, in summary:
Galbatorix figures he can kill all his birds with one stone. Punish Murtagh for running away, grow the dragon out of infancy, make the perfect weapon against Eragon, and not have to control two creatures at once. So he uses his magic to fuse Murtagh and Thorn into one.

Mike grips the steering wheel and resists the urge to scoff. The kid is barely out of high school. The kid has deep rooted issues – desperate for approval and acceptance. Along came Walter, who probably thought he’d hit jackpot with a kid like Jesse Pinkman. Sweet, pliable Pinkman. It's tragic, really. Jesse never stood a chance.
