Summary
Shayne sits on the edge of his bed, hands curled in the blankets at his sides. There's a look of profound resignation behind his eyes, a deep sort of sadness that hits Spencer in the chest. He gets like this sometimes, especially as his father has gotten sicker. As if preparing for some terrible fate to befall him – as if Courtney would let it, Spencer would joke.

Matt had first imagined the falling being metaphorical, but God has a sick sense of humor sometimes. Later into the evening now, she swipes the card into the shared hotel room. Slightly winded from the stairs up to it, she's distracted. Distracted looking for Kenny as the door opens, and feeling sorry for herself, and in pain. She isn't paying attention to her surroundings, and an old fancy rug that's color fades into the floor gets caught up under her sneakers edge.
The self deprecation slams out of her mind when hitting the floor jostles her whole being in a moment of white-hotness. The thud echoes through the empty room and she's suddenly really glad Kenny hasn't arrived yet.

He doesn’t let go of his arm as he goes to rifle through his overfull backpack next to his bed. Matt grumbles, but makes no move to pull away, sitting down next to him. He’s not sure what he expected out of his brother's weapon of a backpack but when he pulls out a bottle of clear glitter nail polish he knows it wasn’t that.
Matt must be staring at him like he's finally lost it because he lets go of his arm dramatically throwing his hands up in the air. “Don’t-” “Look at you like that? Well sorry if I’m a little lost, dude. What's your big idea?”
