Summary
Lars likes Driver's gloves.
He likes the way they wrap themselves snugly around each and every one of Driver's fingers, likes the way they caress the palms and backs of his hands, hug the lithe lines of his wrists. He likes the way Driver's hands flex within them; the soft creaking of the worn leather is as soothing to Lars's ears as a masterfully crafted, cloying lullaby. Lars likes to watch him pull them on, the way his fingers wiggle and settle into their rightful place, ready to do a job.
Their job—other than to hold Driver's hands while he drives—is to touch.

Summary
“I’ll wash your jacket,” Lars says, holding his hand out. The bottom half of Driver’s jacket is dark and stained with blood. (The blood goes all the way around, like it’s not only from Driver’s injury. Lars pretends not to notice.) It’s ripped, next to the zipper, from the knife that was in his stomach. Lars doesn’t think Driver should wear a bloody jacket.
Driver shakes his head, eyeing Lars warily.
Well. That’s okay. Lars doesn’t like when people take his blanket, either.

Lars finds the Driver bleeding in his car on the side of the road. A tentative relationship forms.

Summary
You can tolerate little things if you know they're coming, if you know it'll be over soon - you can shake hands without wearing gloves now. But that's just improving your pain tolerance. Learning to cope with the unavoidable, all the tiny moments of contact that come with being around other people. It doesn't hurt any less. You can take it, but you don't want it.
