In his mind, Kojiro was enough. More than enough.
He never really sat down to think about why Kojiro was it for him. It was as if Kaoru seemed content already with the knowledge that Kojiro was his constant no matter life's curveballs. That it had become a sort of knowing, the way someone's presence can engulf itself into the threads of your life by accident one day, stitched over and over until whatever wound torn open is sewn shut.

“It’ll be fun, he said.” Kaoru muttered lowly, loud enough in the quiet corridor. The employees must have turned down the horror music on purpose to scare them. “We haven't gone to a haunted house in years, he said.”
“I can hear you, you know?” Kojiro turned back slightly to flash Kaoru an annoyed roll of his eyes.

If Kojiro was brave enough, he would have told Kaoru then and there that he had always liked seeing the way his golden irises reflected in the sunlight. That he could always tell if Kaoru was in a room from the lingering scent of cherry blossoms he seemed to emit everywhere. That he had fallen deep, deep in love with Kaoru since high school and would have followed him anywhere in the world.
But that was stupid.

On cue, there was a groan beside him, followed by incoherent mumbling, followed by a much more coherent, “Holy shit. You’re awake.” He whispered, quiet, unsure, and so so excited that he almost got excited by proxy, noting the growing smile and the way he gripped the sheets in his hands. “How are you feeling? Do you need water? God I missed you, I was so worried—“.
“I’m sorry.” He managed out, because it was the only thing he could think to say, feeling a tad guilty at the overwhelming confusion on the man’s face, but he couldn’t exactly pretend he knew him, could he? “I— I don’t want to sound rude, or anything,” and that only worsened the confusion, somehow, “But who are you?”
Silence.
