Sometimes, Jason wished he wasn’t as stubborn. Sometimes, he wished he would just give in. Sometimes, when it was dark enough outside that he didn’t have to look his own shame in the face as he thought it, he wished he would get hurt badly enough that something else would take over long enough for his feet to find their way to the Manor by themselves.
Sometimes, he wished that he would go right up to death’s door and wait there because he was pretty sure that Dick Grayson would come screaming to drag him away from it.

Summary
Red Hood rules Crime Alley, shoots the bastards who need shooting, and mostly stays out of the Bats' way. It's not pretty - Bruce is still prone to several disapproving looks and a lecture whenever Jason and him cross paths - but it beats getting the shit beaten out of him by the Joker, or being sent to Arkham or Blackgate, so their uneasy truce is more good enough for Jason.
The Bats don't know any details of what happened to Jason - they still think he faked his death, for God's sake - and Jason plans to keep it that way.
And then fucking Scarecrow wreaks havoc on Gotham with his hideous Fear Toxin, and a rebreather can only do so much when you're drowning in Fear.
Some secrets have a way of getting out, even if Jason wants nothing more than for them to stay hidden.
