“This is all too much.” He intended to let out a small laugh at the end, but he’s too busy catching his breath to make the delivery less damning.
At this, Caleb's hands are quick to retreat and he sits upright. His fingertips ghost at Essek’s biceps but do not commit to grabbing them as though he’s not sure the touch is welcome. He could not be more wrong. “Then we’ll stop, or do something more desirable instead.”
“I’m– No, that’s not–” Essek has never been so caught unaware by his lack of clarity in his life. He feels like a breathing dichotomy. “I’m just apprehensive,” is all he can think to say. Brilliant use of language. That word does absolutely nothing to get his desired point across. He should consider writing a damn book with such riveting eloquence.
Blessedly, Caleb seems to get it anyhow. “Talk to me, liebling. What do you need?”

Summary
As Essek and Caleb grow closer in Aeor, Essek is forced to confront the challenges that their differing sleep schedules present.
Caleb views this less as a challenge, and more as an excuse to have his way with Essek in the middle of the night, before returning to sleep until morning.

“I should clarify,” said Essek, when Marion returned with the box. “We have experimented with intoxicants before, with initial success and subsequent failure. Recently, we have used enchantment, though Caleb hesitates to become reliant on it for ethical reasons, and I for practical ones.”
Marion raised a brow. “You don’t wish to condition yourself to come in your trousers every time he makes to cast?”

His body feels strange. There had been many scenarios vivid in his mind when he had woven his Teleportation spell with shaking fingers, but he finds himself realizing that somehow, all of them had included Caleb putting his hands on Essek’s shoulders.
Caleb, concerned and serious, a tenseness to his brow as he reinforces his wards and asks Essek if he was followed. Caleb, frustration in the set of his jaw, asking Essek why he had not come sooner. Caleb, soft-mouthed, guiding him to the closest chair.
When the room instead is quiet and dark, and then keeps staying quiet and dark, he finds it suddenly difficult to keep standing.
