Summary
Izuku and Katsuki are mermen in the same pod. They're best friends—partners in crime—and they do everything together. They even take up jobs guarding the pod's territory together.
When Katsuki presents as an alpha, nothing changes. Izuku expects that nothing will change when he presents, either. But then, he presents as an omega. At first, he doesn't mind. Why would anything change? Besides, maybe now that he's an omega, Katsuki would consider courting him.
But instead, Katsuki all but vanishes.

Sun cut across Katsuki’s face.
His body felt heavy, as if he’d swum too deep and the entire weight of the ocean was pushing against his limbs. His mind was sluggish, too. He stared up at the rock shelf above him, and blinked at the sun glinting through kelp leaves without understanding.
He was alone, he thought, and didn’t know why that surprised him. He’d been alone for as long as he could remember...
Katsuki gasped, and then sat upright so fast that his whole body seized in pain.
Izuku!
