Chapter Text

Wei Wuxian blinked awake, surprised that it was dark outside and his husband was still asleep. The pressure on his bladder explained why he was woken up so early. Carefully extracting himself from the arms of his husband, Wei Wuxian slid out of bed and went to relieve himself. He was still sleepy which is why he did not notice the change until he had finished emptying his bladder.

Wei Wuxian looked down and blinked once, twice. He rested a hand on the swell in his stomach that he swore had not been there the night before. A high pitched wheeze escaped from his mouth as he spread out his fingers. The bump was small but definitely there, covered by the fabric of his sleep robes.

“Lan Zhan! Lan Zhan!” A thud followed his call and soon Wei Wuxian’s husband was by his side – too fast to even be seen to be running.

“Wei Ying.” Wei Wuxian could hear the unspoken worries in his husband’s words and quickly reassured Lan Wangji.

“Here.” Embarrassed to be tearing up once more, Wei Wuxian took one of Lan Wangji’s hands and rested it on his stomach. His husband was as still as a statue for a brief moment. Wordlessly Lan Wangji dropped to his knees and pulled Wei Wuxian’s sleep robes open so he could look at his stomach clearly.

“Ah, Lan Zhan! How could you manhandle your pregnant husband like this?” Wei Wuxian laughed through his tears. Something about the moment felt joyous, and looking at Lan Wangji’s awed face he could see that he was not alone in that feeling. His husband’s fingers were tracing the swell of his belly reverently.

Wei Wuxian had to suck in a breath as Lan Wangji pressed a feather light kiss just below his belly button.

“Our baby is in there Lan Zhan.” He whispered, as if raising his voice would break the spell.

“Thank you.” Lan Wangji looked up at him. Wei Wuxian could not resist anymore and pulled his husband up into a kiss. He snuggled into Lan Wangji’s chest, his husband automatically wrapping his arms around him once he did.

They stayed in the embrace for some time until Wei Wuxian yawned and was promptly ushered back to bed by Lan Wangji, playfully complaining the whole way.

It was class time so Wei Wuxian walked through an empty Cloud Recesses, carrying a small stack of books to return to the library. He was walking quickly, hoping to get them back before Lan Wangji took a break from his work to check up on him. Wei Wuxian could already imagine the disappointed look his husband would give him for not asking for help with the books.

“I can carry four books by myself!” Wei Wuxian huffed to himself.

“Wei Wuxian!”

Immediately Wei Wuxian stood up straight and turned around to face Lan Qiren. The older man was looking at him with characteristic disapproval. Wei Wuxian quickly ran through all the rules he had recently broken, which was a lot – Lan Wangji was letting him get away with a lot nowadays – and prepared for some form of punishment.

Really he should have anticipated it, Wei Wuxian supposed, it had been far too long since Lan Qiren had doled out any sort of punishment or even a lecture for his improper ways. He had gotten too comfortable!

“Why are you carrying those books?” Lan Qiren asked severely.

“I am taking them back to the library?” Wei Wuxian trailed off as if he was asking a question. “I know I am not supposed to remove them from the library but…”

“Nonsense.” Lan Qiren snapped. He took the pile of books out of Wei Wuxian’s arms and sighed. “I will have words with Wangji about letting a pregnant person carry such things. He should be doing this himself.”

Wei Wuxian was sure his unattractive gaping resembled a fish in that moment. “I uh… I can carry a few books.” He sheepishly said.

“Unacceptable.” With that Lan Qiren stalked off in the direction of the library, leaving Wei Wuxian standing alone to do his best fish impression.

The day did not get any less weird after that. Wei Wuxian decided to spend some time with the youngest Lans (they reminding him of ducklings sometimes) and they very politely insisted that they go to the Bunny Meadow for story time. Of course Wei Wuxian obliged, but when he went to sit down a panicked cacophony of voices stopped him.

“No Master Wei!”

“Stop!”

“Do not do that!”

Wei Wuxian blinked and looked at the children who were protesting so severely and stood up straight. Did they want him to stand and tell them stories? Before he could ask the children formed a circle and started whispering amongst themselves. Wei Wuxian did not have the heart to tell them that he could indeed hear everything they said.

“Why did you not think of this?”

“You did not either!”

“What do we do?”

“One of us needs to go back.”

“I will do it.”

One child broke away from the group and sprinted back the way they had come and the rest of them looked at Wei Wuxian innocently.

“Sooo… I cannot sit down?” Wei Wuxian asked, confused.

“Not yet.” One of the Lan children said solemnly. So they all waited in silence until the other one returned with an armful of fabric that was so large it towered above his head. Wei Wuxian only found himself more confused when the children began retrieving pillows and blankets from the pile. A large pillow was set down on the grass and pointed to imperiously.

Wei Wuxian cautiously lowered himself onto the pillow and got an approving nod from the silent child. Another one carefully draped a blanket over his lap, while yet another propped up his back with more pillows. Soon Wei Wuxian found himself ensconced in a makeshift nest as the children circled and judged their creation. Finally they seemed satisfied and knelt in neat rows in front of him.

“Um, this is very nice. Thank you…” Wei Wuxian said and watched as their faces brightened at his words. “Why did you do all this?”

“It is important for the baby to be comfy!” One chirped, getting a series of nods from the rest of the disciples. Wei Wuxian looked around suspiciously.

“Did Hanguang Jun tell you this?”

“Grandmaster did!”

That… Was not something that Wei Wuxian was mentally prepared to explore any further. He shook off his own confusion and began telling stories to his captivated audience.
