Work Text:

I looked up at the diner clock. There was only half an hour left of my shift and I couldn’t wait for it to end. Darry had been working hard lately, trying to make money for his brothers. He never complained but I could tell that he was exhausted. Today I had decided to race home and make dinner for the gang, seeing as Darry normally did. My daydreaming was suddenly interrupted by the sounds of both laughing and yelling. I turn my head and see Two-Bit howling at my coworker.

“Two-Bit!” I call over, trying to help the poor girl.
“Oh hey Y/N, come look at-“
I cut him off by offering something that no one in the gang could resist.
“Do you want some chocolate cake? it’s on the house.”
Two-Bit immediately turned away and walked over to the counter, distracted by my offer for food. My coworker sends an appreciative glance before going to clear a table. The end of my shift goes by fast with Two-Bit making me laugh the whole time. Before I know it, it’s been half an hour and Two-Bit offers to walk me to the Curtis home.
“Can’t have the socs getting to a pretty girl like you.” He says, only half joking.
It was pretty dangerous to be a girl, especially a greaser girl, and the boys always wanted to protect me.

Two-Bit and I walked towards the house while I told him about my plan to surprise Darry.
“Wow Y/N, you’re gonna cook and everything for us?” He asks, seemingly in amazement.
“It’s the least I can do for Darry. I mean he does everything for us.”
Two-Bit thinks about it for a second before breaking out into a wide grin
“I wouldn’t mind you cooking for me forever.” He winks and I roll my eyes before walking into the house.

Immediately after entering, I start preparing the meal. I have to finish quickly before Darry gets home. This meant I only had forty five minutes. Luckily I had chosen an easy recipe.
Everything was going along great, Two-Bit had turned on Mickey and I was actually enjoying cooking.
At least, until the door opened.

Steve, Sodapop, Johnny, and Ponyboy walked into the house and immediately it was chaos.

“Hey Y/N, what’s going on?”
“Two-Bit! Didja’ go to school today?”
“Any cake left?”

I sigh before setting the supplies on the counter. There was only twenty minutes until Darry would be home. Dinner had to be made soon. Johnny sauntered over quietly to where I was standing, leaving all of the ruckus behind.

“Whatcha doin’?”
“Cooking dinner for the gang before Darry gets home, you wanna help?”

The boy nods slowly before getting plates and cutlery to set the table.
Twenty minutes go by, me cooking as fast as I can, and Johnny finding small things to do. The rest of the boys had gone outside to let out their energy.

“Hey Y/N, where does this go?” Johnny asked, holding up a spatula that he had just cleaned. I start to point, but am interrupted by the sound of the door opening once again. I turn around, ready to scold whoever bothered us, but instead I am met with my boyfriend, Darry. He has a small smile on his face when our eyes meet. Johnny looks uncomfortable and takes his leave.

“I-Imma go with the guys.” The poor boy practically runs outside. Now, with no one around to invade this personal moment, Darry glides over to me and holds my face gently with one hand. He looks around at the nearly finished meal.

“You did this for me?”
“We’ll i would’ve done more, I wasn’t expecting you to be home this early.”
My boyfriend looks at me gently and smiles.

“I was coming home to surprise you.”
He drops his hand and we grin at each other before he opens his mouth to speak.

“I’ll finish up here, you go get the guys?”
I say my thanks before walking into the madness outside.
