“Welcome back to NGTV news, where today’s news is tomorrow’s history. I’m Dan Vaapit, bringing you the newest info on what Ninjago has to offer us today.”
Dan flashed a bright grin at the camera and tapped the edge of his stack of papers to the table, “Our first story for today features none other than two of Ninjago’s greatest heroes, the ninja! Recently, a small channel on YouTube uploaded a video from the inside of a bank that had been held up in a sting operation around ten o’clock in the morning that same day. The poster was a hostage in the situation, but managed to capture a blurry video of the ninja as they fought the criminals. The video, though very pixelated, shows a clear image of what looks to be horns on top of two ninja’s heads, and a tail whipping behind the Green ninja himself.”
On the green screen behind him, a clip of said incident began to play. The noises of gunshots and other fighting noises were muted by the shuffling of fabric and the crying of a baby among the hostages, but the video shakily zoomed in on the Black ninja’s silhouette as he delivered a high kick to the leader’s temple, knocking him unconscious. The Black ninja then cried out in pain as a stray bullet clipped his shoulder. The focus switched to the Green ninja as he started to undo all the binds around the hostages' wrists, and his position close to the camera made the twitch of his tail behind him all the more obvious. The video cuts off there.
“We have Gale with the two ninja in Ninjago city square right now, ready to answer a few of our questions about this footage. Gale?”
“I’m Gale Gossip coming to you live from New Ninjago City. Right now, folks, we are faced with the oddest of dilemmas. It seems that our very own Ninja have added some features to their new looks, and no, they aren’t what you would expect. The citizens of ninjago have all been dying to know: what exactly are these new oddities? Well, I’m here with the ninja to find out the answer to that question.”
She nodded her head and the camera shifted to the left to reveal a nervous looking Green ninja. His tail whipped anxiously back and forth behind him, though Gale paid it no mind, “Lloyd Garmadon, also known as the Green ninja. Please tell me: what exactly are these new developments that you and the Black ninja, Cole Brookstone have added to your costumes?” Gale all but shoved her mic towards Lloyd.
He jumped, but quickly cleared his throat and righted himself. His voice was smooth in a way that came from years of dealing with public speaking and interviews, “They aren’t part of our costumes, ma’am. I won’t say much here, but Cole and I are scheduled for an interview on Late Night Ninjago tomorrow where we’ll be answering questions.”
Gale pulled her mic back with a pout, “But surely you can spare a few details beforehand for your loving fans, right?” Her voice was sickly sweet. Anyone watching could tell she knew how to pry information out of someone.
“Um-“ Lloyd didn’t look like he knew how to respond to that, “I don’t…I don’t, uh-“
“Alright!” A louder voice called out and the camera turned just in time to see a mass of black and orange scoop Lloyd onto his good shoulder in a fireman's carry.
Lloyd floundered and pushed against his shoulder, “Cole!”
“Not right now, Green bean, the adults are talking.” With a solid pat to his companion’s back, Cole leaned down towards a stunned Gale Gossip and spoke into the mic, “Hi guys, Cole here- oh, hey dad,” he waved (or tried to- it was hard when one arm was trapped in a sling.) at the camera with a sharp-toothed grin, ”I’m coming home next weekend and I’ll give you all the details then, sorry if this is how you found out about all this. Anyways-“ he had basically taken over the interview at that point. “I’m sure you’re all curious about everything, but I’ve gotta take Lloyd home before he spoils the surprise. That, and I’ve been informed by Nya that there’s a car chase on second street. Later!” With that, he turned around and started running in the opposite directions towards his bike. Lloyd pounded his fists on his back before eventually giving up and allowing himself to be manhandled like a limp green noodle.
“Well, uh- there you have it,” the camera refocused on a frazzled Gale Gossip, “All of our questions will be answered tomorrow night on channel 8’s Late Night Ninjago talk show. Be sure not to miss it! Back to you, Dan.”
“Thanks Gale. Now to Fred with the weather.”

The opening theme of the talk show played while an opening credits animation took up the screen, eventually dissipating to show a relaxed talk-show set. Cole and Lloyd, both dressed in casual clothes that allowed their supernatural appendages and other oddities to comfortably breathe, sat on a brown leather couch beside a red armchair and a decorative end table with waters on it. They both looked comfortable, but to the trained eye it was visible that they were nervous about this interview. The host, who sat in the armchair, flashed the camera a blinding smile and threw out his arms energetically. He wore a crisp blue suit with a white undershirt and purple tie. His mustache was meticulously well-groomed, and he radiated the energy of a severely caffeinated theater kid.
“Welcome back to Late Night Ninjago! The show where we delve into all the latest gossip New Ninjago City has to offer. I’m your host, Patton Wilkes, and I’m joined by two reoccurring guests, Cole Brookstone, the Black ninja, and Lloyd Garmadon, our very own Green Ninja!” The audience, all dressed in very elaborate and fancy clothing, cheered and clapped as the camera panned over them. The ninjas waved, looking underdressed compared to everyone else in their open jackets and jeans. Cole had a free pass due to his injured shoulder, but Lloyd had never liked suits anyway, and no one was going to judge one of the saviors of Ninjago for not wearing formal clothing.
“Hey guys! Great to be back, Pat.” Lloyd smiled with practiced ease, “I can already guess what today’s episode is gonna be about, huh?” Lloyd pulled his legs up underneath him to sit cross-legged, “Lay it on us.”
“Right!” Patton coughed into his fist, “So, after you, Cole, had been gone for around two months and Lloyd, who had been seen the previous day without anything unusual about him, both appeared at the scene of that bank robbery with your fellow ninja in tow, I’ve been dying to know: what the heck are those?” He pointed at Cole’s horns, since he sat closest to him.
Cole stared at him blankly, “…horns?” The audience laughed.
“Well I know that,” sputtered Patton, “But they look so lifelike! Why is it that you’re wearing them? And Lloyd, how did you create a tail that moves so realistically?”
Lloyd and Cole shared a look that seemed to hold an entire conversation behind it. Cole was the one to drop the giant bombshell, “That’s because they’re real. They aren’t any sort of new addition to our costumes or anything like that.”
It was silent for a moment. A long, agonizing moment. It only ended when Patton shot an urgent look off-screen and a pre-recorded laugh track played. Patton chuckled, “Oh, Cole. You’ve always had such a strange sense of humor.”
“He’s telling the truth.” Lloyd sighed and rubbed the bridge of his nose, “Listen, I know it doesn’t sound very believable, but we’ve been finding out some shocking things ever since the Oni were defeated.”
Patton nodded, “Ah, yes. The dreadful Oni.” He over exaggeratedly shivered as if in fear, “The beasts from another realm that brought terror and destruction to our beautiful city and turned nearly every citizen to stone.” Patton leaned towards the Ninja on the couch, “Tell me, what have you found? Perhaps a way to vanquish these dastardly beasts so that they may never step foot in Ninjago again? Or the secret of their power so that you can learn how to undo it?”
As Patton continued to talk, both Lloyd and Cole grew increasingly tense and threw numerous looks at the other.
“Well,” Lloyd continued nonetheless, “It’s nothing like that-“
Cole cut him off, “Patton.” He looked up at the host with a somber expression, “We came here today to cut off any misconceptions or theories before they come to pass. That, and because I want to live openly. I’m not gonna hide in the Bounty anymore.”
Lloyd snorted, “You make it sound like you’re coming out again.”
The Black ninja shoved his shoulder, “Oh, come on. I’m trying to have a moment here.” He turned back to the camera with a controlled, anxious expression, but with an undertone of hope behind his eyes. It was similar to the look he wore when he was still the leader of the team, “Listen close, Ninjago. You want answers, we’re here to give them to you, just like we said on the news yesterday.”
Patton actually seemed shocked by their words, but adjusted to the more serious tone with grace, “Alright then, this is a talk show, after all. So talk, ninja. The floor is yours.”
A sigh echoed throughout the studio before Lloyd spoke, “In the time when everyone was turned to stone by the fog that covered the city, my father, the same one who tried to conquer Ninjago, and I were tasked with venturing inside Borg tower to destroy the realm crystal, which the Oni were using to travel into our realm from that of Oni and Dragon.”
Patton opened his mouth to ask something, but Cole shook his head, “Any questions you’ve got are probably gonna be answered. Just hang on.”
Lloyd shot Cole a grateful look as Patton closed his mouth before continuing his story. He leaned deeply against the back of the couch, “There is a legend about my grandfather, the first spinjitzu master, and how he created this realm. The land of Oni and Dragon is the first of the sixteen realms, and was inhabited by both of the species. They were trapped in a never ending battle, with the Dragons having mastery over the ability to create,“ he paused.
“…and the Oni, the power to destroy.” He let out a deep sigh before continuing, “They each embody the balance of good and evil, creation and destruction, and from that balance came the first spinjitzu master.”
Patton leaned against his fist, “Fascinating.”
“Yup,” Cole spared a soft grin for Lloyd, “I wasn’t there when he was told this story, so I’ve only got the general gist of it, but it gets even better from here… or worse, depending on how you look at it.” With that unsettling statement, Cole turned back to Lloyd and signaled for him to continue.
“The first spinjitzu master was half Oni, half Dragon, and was constantly being pulled by both sides so that he could help them win the war against the other. Finally, he had enough, and traveled away from the first realm and created Ninjago using the four elements of creation.” This part of the story was well known, so he skipped ahead a bit, to the part that would make or break the public’s opinion of him- of them.
“The first spinjitzu master is my grandfather. Anyone who passed their fifth grade science class-“ Cole snorted, “-will know that means I, his grandchild, am a fourth Oni and a fourth Dragon by blood. I am not entirely human.” All sound in the recording studio simply stopped. It was as if the master of sound had silenced the room itself.
The silence was broken by Lloyd as he all but flopped into Cole’s side with a deep, relieved sigh, “Grandfather, did that feel good to get off my chest.” His tail wagged back and forth against the couch cushions.
The audience muttered amongst themselves; “How can this be true?” “This has to be a prank.” “I don’t think this could be anything other than the truth. You saw what the Oni could do.”
“Can we still trust him? The Green ninja?”
Patton, on the other hand, gripped the armrests of his chair with white knuckles and a gaping mouth, “Wh- How did. I’m-“
Lloyd, after having explained the worst of it, started to grow more comfortable in explaining, “Someone close to me revealed that I’m part Oni and Dragon not too long before the whole SOG takeover. I spent a lot of time during the resistance movement slowly sprouting a tail.” He tapped a clawed finger to his horns, “I think the Dragon in me showed up more than the Oni, which I’m kinda glad for.”
Cole nodded while Patton continued to look as if they had told him his mother had been diagnosed with stage four breast cancer. He kept looking off screen like he was asking if the crew could hear this. Cole chuckled, “Yeah. Mine went a bit like that, too.” It was once again time for Patton to look at the ninja like they were crazy. His mouth opened and closed as if he wanted to say something and then thought better of it. His eyebrows had practically disappeared behind his hair.
“I guess I should start like Lloyd did.” Cole paid no mind to the stares he received. He had grown up around actors, so he knew how to keep a calm front when attention was on him. “There was an accident caused by some reversed wiring on the Bounty while we were rescuing some reporters and anchors, and I got dropped into the fog. I broke a few ribs and messed up my leg and arm pretty badly breaking through a skylight, though that probably slowed my fall enough to save me.” The last part was muttered to himself, but the boom mic off stage managed to pick up on it.
Patton somehow shook himself out of his daze and realized he was still a host on a well-known network and had to attend to his job, “Well- yes. We are fortunate that you survived that landing.”
Cole nodded, “I’m the fortunate one, but I’m glad you think that way. I’ve been dead once before, and I don’t want to go through that again.” The audience chuckled at that, remembering Cole’s ghost phase.
“I don’t think Ninjago, at least, those of us who aren’t your enemies, would want to see you dead either.” Patton was getting back into the flow of things, but his eyes constantly drifted towards their horns and claws and razor sharp teeth. To Lloyd’s tail and slitted eyes and Cole’s black marbled hands.
Cole continued, “The smoke found me not long after and my communications were offline, but I managed to call the Earth Driller from somewhere else in the city and get in before I suffocated.” He still had nightmares about that- about his fading vision and hands around his throat, “I didn’t think anything of it until about two months ago.”
“This is when I mentioned how I believed he could be part Oni due to how he didn’t turn to stone in the fog.” Lloyd sat up straighter, though he was still pressed into Cole’s side, “It didn’t take long before we figured out this whole metamorphosis thing is triggered by the person’s realization or idea of their bloodline.”
“Do you remember when I almost made Jay faint because I lost a bunch of teeth at dinner?”
“All I seem to remember is you growing aggressively possessive over a plate-“
Someone cleared their throat for attention, and both guests turned back to Patton, “What I’m wondering is, if Lloyd found out about his ancestry during the Oni scare, which, correct me if I’m wrong, was quite a while ago, then how did he manage to conceal his…” he gestured vaguely to Lloyd’s, well, everything.
Lloyd seemed to understand, though, “Truthfully, I was informed of my ancestry back when my father took over the city as Emporer.” Lloyd stuck his tongue out at the notion, “Either way, Oni are masters of deception. Not that I like deceiving anyone, but…” he closed his eyes and exhaled. In a puff of golden smoke, his scales, horns, and tail disappeared, leaving him looking like a fairly normal teen if it weren’t for the fangs and slit eyes, “Shapeshifting is something they are good at, and I was lucky enough to have another Oni to guide me. It gets itchy if I hold it for too long, though.”
Patton’s eyes widened at the transformation and turned to Cole, “Can you-“
“No, I cannot shapeshift.” He sighed, “I guess great-granny Gertrude didn’t pass on that gene to me. It’s why I had to make all of this-“ he gestured to himself, “-public knowledge so I could get back on the field. Not that I had much intention of hiding who I am.”
Patton nodded, “You made that very clear when you came out a few years back.”
Cole nodded, “Yeah, and now I’m doing it again.”
Patton grinned, “Well, it seems that we have got ourselves quite the story here, folks.” His gaze was turned to the camera. His confusion and anxiety was evident in his eyes, “So we’ll be here to answer more of your burning questions after a few short messages!”

The video jump-cuts to the pristine, white floors of a craft store as the cosplayer picks up multitudes of styrofoam, paint (which was mercifully on sale), armature wire, black dye, fabric, various wood scraps, and nylon skin-tone leggings like the fake socks they give you at shoe stores. “Y’all are lucky I just got promoted at work, otherwise I’d have some trouble getting this stuff for cheap.”
The video cuts to a montage of the cosplayer with goofy music on top and a voice over that explained what exactly he had done, “Okay, so I decided to use styrofoam and the bendy wire for the horns- you can see me carving them out here- and I attached an old headband to the inside of Cole’s wig so that I could securely attach the horns to the outside- removable, so that my Leo cosplay isn’t completely doomed. Here’s me testing it out.” The video version of the cosplayer whooped with joy while the prototype wig and horn thing stayed on his head, “And here’s me giving it the shake test,” cut to the cosplayer rapidly shaking his head back and forth to assess the security of the horns.
The video cut to a view of the cosplayer’s hand throwing various paints at a paint-stained desk, “Then it was painting time!” The video returned to a timelapsed side view of him carefully painting the styrofoam, “I covered it in a few layers of clear-coating after this to keep the paint from chipping and keep the styrofoam from being damaged. And with that, the horns were done! Part two where I do Green’s horns and Black’s arms will be up immediately- follow for more cosplay content!”]

Cole: I wouldn’t call them ‘gifts’, per se. Overall, I just got a bit more possessive and nocturnal, and then all of my senses sharpened to the extreme.
Patton: Oh? How so?
Cole: Even right now, focusing on this conversation, I can still hear the buzzing of the overhead lights and it’s a little bright on my eyes now. I might have to get some sunglasses, and I have to carry headphones or earplugs wherever I go in case it gets too loud, and step out of the room if there’s too many conflicting scents. This isn’t even mentioning the touch sensitivity. It was worse when they first grew in, but the roucher patches of skin on my joints and my horns are pretty perceptive when it comes to touch. It kinda sucks sometimes, but other times it’s nice.

“And here we see a human-Oni hybrid in his natural habitat aboard the Bounty.” Kai speaks like a narrator for a nature documentary while he walks into the game room where Cole, Jay and Zane co-exist in comfortable companionship. Jay and Zane reside on cushions in front of the TV as they play video games and Cole watches them from the beanbag and scrolls through his phone, mindful of the claws on his fingers.
Kai continues, “When faced with overwhelming stimulation in the comfort of its large den, the hybrid will cocoon himself in a heavy outer coat for comfort. This coat is formally known as a weighted blanket.”
“You realize this kind of thing is why he growls at you, right?” Jay doesn’t even look behind himself to chastise Kai.
“It seems the humans that the hybrid has pack-bonded with do not take kindly to perceived threats. Humanoid-Onis tend to be very possessive, so it stands to reason that their pack-mates would be much the same.”
“Oh, [bleep] off.” Zane laughs at Jay’s curse, causing him to lose the match.
Kai ignores the ensuing whoops of victory from Jay to point the camera back at Cole, “The human-Oni hybrid remains oblivious to the chatter of his pack, having placed special objects in his ears to escape his loud, harsh surroundings.” A wire connects from Cole’s ears to his phone, and faint soft rock and indie music can be heard from the buds, “I am going to attempt to initiate contact with the creature.”
“Touch me anywhere I don’t like and I bite you” Cole doesn’t even look up from his phone, “It’s loud today, so make sure you’re quiet.” None of the ninjas have any reservations in showing physical affection in Kai’s vlogs anymore, and Cole shows this by scooting over to make space for Kai on the beanbag.
Carefully approaching with the camera turned on himself, Kai speaks softly, “The hybrid has accepted my presence as one of its pack-mates and feels unthreatened by my advancements.” Kai sits down next to Cole and slings his arm over his shoulder. Cole rolls his eyes but leans into him nonetheless, which looks a bit odd with how much larger he is compared to the vlogger. He hums contentedly and continues scrolling through his phone.
The camera picks up Kai’s fond look at his brother before he seems to refocus, “It seems that I am now trapped in the hybrid’s clutches. Fear not, Kai’s Adventures on the Bounty will continue after a few short messages!”
[The video cuts to a few ads, including an old one calling for the newly revealed Oni-ninja to step down as protectors of the city. It is quickly skipped.]

“Gale Gossip, coming to you live in front of the mayor’s office, where an alarmingly large group of protestors have gathered to protest the continued service of the Green and Black ninjas, both of which have been revealed to be part Oni last month.”
The roar of the crowd is deafening, even over TV. The crowd is held back by the police force’s blockade, but the tension in the air feels ready to snap. It’s only a matter of time until the situation ends up dangerous. Protesters wave signs depicting crude caricatures of the two ninja with Xs and words like ‘no more Oni!’. They chant like the clap of thunder, “Protect ninjago!”
“Despite the police commissioner's statements that they cannot do anything to make the ninja step down even if they wanted to, seeing as they are not formally employed as protectors of Ninjago, the people still demand retribution. It seems that their viewpoint stems from the Oni attack on the city a few years ago- in which almost every citizen of New Ninjago City was turned to stone by an ominous black cloud created by the Oni. According to numerous sources, including the Green and Black ninjas themselves, Oni are known as bringers of doom with a penchant for destruction. With both ninja being at least an eighth Oni, and the Green ninja having a similar amount of Dragon blood, the people are beginning to wonder: what happens if Ninjago’s protectors try to destroy them too?”

The camera points slightly upwards at a crouched down Cole with his hood off, presumably on patrol. The sky is covered in light clouds and the sound of the general hustle and bustle of mid-town can be heard. Light-hearted music plays in the background. Cold grins, “You wanna touch my horns?”

The camera is now facing towards the little kid who walks forward on unsure feet. The ground is concrete and there are multiple storefronts spanning the sidewalk, a few of which are restaurants with patrons that stare openly at the ninjas.
“Be careful, try not to hurt me.” There’s humor in Cole’s voice. Kai, Zane and Lloyd can be heard giggling in the background.
The kid nods like this is an important mission, “Mhm, okay.” He walks forward to where the camera isn’t able to see his face anymore.
The camera cuts back to Cole’s face and the little kid who is reaching up towards his horns. Cole laughs and tilts his head so that the kid can reach.
“Woah.”
“I’ll take that as a compliment.” More snickering from the other ninja, “What’s your name, buddy?”
The kid’s eyes are transfixed on Cole’s horns, but he answers, “I’m- ‘m Jonah.”
“Hi, Jonah.” Cole pushes forward a fist. Jonah fist bumps him and Cole mimes a little explosion. Jonah looks at him as if he had hung the stars in the sky.
The footage cuts to an upwards angle of Cole to the side, who is presumably standing now. A female voice speaks a bit out of breath, “I’m so sorry about him, sir. He’s a really big fan and he ran off before I could catch him and-“
“It’s okay, ma’am, I don’t mind.” He speaks quickly to calm her fears, “I was actually going to ask, if it’s okay with you, of course, if Jonah wanted to walk around with us for a bit- like an honorary ninja.”
“Can I, mom?” Jonah sounds elated at the mere prospect, “I’ll be good, please please-“
She sighs, “Yes, honey. You can walk around with the Ninja, granted that I can come as well.”
“Yay!”
The next jumpcut results in one of the other ninja, presumably Kai, holding the camera. The other two walk in line with Cole, who has Jonah on his shoulders. The kid has a bright smile on his face and he grips into Cole’s horns like reigns. Cole laughs while Jonah turns his head left and right as if he were driving a motorcycle.
“Careful with the head, kid!” Despite his protests, Cole is smiling.
Jonah tugs again, “Faster!”
“You heard the little guy, faster!” Kai jeers from behind the camera. In response, Cole tightens his grip around Jonah’s legs and starts running in front of the group, making airplane noises to Jonah’s utter delight.]

Today around 9:45 AM in midtown square, Cole Brookstone, AKA the Black ninja, who was recently revealed to be partially Oni, was accosted and assaulted by members of the Ninjago Protection Movement, as they are calling themselves.
The Black ninja was supposedly on one of his regular patrol routes when he was pushed to the sidewalk and beaten in broad daylight. Witnesses say that the ninja had done nothing to warrant such attacks, but rather a group of people, all wearing red bandannas somewhere on their person, surged forth and overpowered him with bats and other blunt objects. The assailants also wielded numerous flashing handheld lights, speakers, strong perfumes, and other chemicals, which members admitted to using as a way to disorient and overwhelm the ninja, seeing as he was revealed to have extremely acute senses. The ninja did nothing to retaliate against the citizens.
The situation ended around 10:08 AM when the police finally arrived after being called by someone who said they knew the ninja personally. The usurpers were all taken into custody. The Black ninja was unable to give a statement about this event and was escorted away by the acquaintance, who wishes to remain anonymous.
“He just looked so confused.” Said one bystander, Alicia Doberman, when questioned on what she saw, “Poor guy. What did he even do?”

In response to the xxxx protests against the ninja by the Ninjago Protection Movement, which came to a head when supporters of the movement attacked Cole Brookstone, the Black Ninja, for not being entirely human, and rather possessing an eighth Oni blood, the ninja hold a press conference to discuss their views on the current social climate.

[The camera sits in the front of the crowd facing a large podium, which is adorned with microphones, each boasting a different news station or blog logo. Cameras flash and illuminate the speakers with white light. Behind the podium stand the Green and Black ninja, pressed side by side with serious expressions, though the back and forth whip of Lloyd’s tail gives away his frustration and anxiety. He grips the edge of the podium and frowns.
Cole does a better job of putting on a brave face. He looks more relaxed and confident, but not overly so or in a way that conveys pleasure about the current situation. His left arm, the same that had been injured before, is back in a sling. He is covered in various swelling bruises, and his left eye is bruised shut under sickly purple skin. His arms, left exposed by his gi, are similarly bruised in a way that blends in with the black that creeps up from his hands, and covered with square bandages to hide lacerations. He moves slightly, and the camera is able to pick up the broken offshoot of his horn, which is wrapped in thin bandages. Despite surely being in much lingering pain, Cole stands beside his friend with dignity.
Lloyd clears his throat into the microphones and the crowd’s chatter dies down. The camera zooms in to focus solely on the ninja as Lloyd begins to speak.
“I am sure you all know why we are speaking here today,” his tone is level, “But in case those at home are not: My friend- brother, here-“ he gestures to Cole, who nods in recognition, “-Was attacked a few days ago by protesters who identified themselves as part of the Ninjago Protection Movement. A movement that was formed with the sole purpose of…” he has to take a deep breath, and the smooth quality of his voice breaks for a second to reveal the anger and despair underneath, “-the sole purpose of, in their words, ‘Removing those who hurt us from their positions of power, and putting control back into the hands of humanity,’”
Cole steps in, placing his hand on Lloyd’s shoulder, “It has been well known for months now that I am a fourth-generation descendant of the Oni. My great-grandmother, Gertrude Finch, was an Oni who lived peacefully in Ninjago and unfortunately died fighting on the side of humanity in the wars against the Serpentine.” He pauses for a second as the cameras click on, “Lloyd is the grandson of the First Spinjitzu Master, and as such is a third-generation descendant of the Oni and the Dragons.”
With an angry exhale, Lloyd speaks again. The back-and-forth of their speeches sounds practiced and fluid, “We recognize the destructive and violent nature of the Oni, but this does not excuse nor explain the backlash against us.” Lloyd is a bit worked up, and it’s easy to get the impression that if he had the ability to breathe fire like his brother, he would be. The official-looking people who must be hosting the event that had stood just behind the ninja now back up to avoid his tail, which swings back and forth and snaps like a whip, “We have done nothing but give our all in protecting this city and Ninjago as a whole!” If one were to listen close, they might be able to hear the low rumble of Lloyd’s angry growl. It is a well known fact that the Green Ninja cannot argue without tearing up, but no one is prepared for the anger hidden behind glassy eyes.
“Lloyd, calm down.” Cole squeezes his friend’s shoulder. Compared to his brother, Cole is the steady foundation that his element represents, “Let me take it from here.”
With a huff and one last frustrated look back at the swarm of reporters, all with cameras pointed at his temperament, he allows himself to deflate and step back to let Cole take over.
The Black Ninja steps forth and does not wither under the media’s full attention, “I’ll pick up where Lloyd left off in saying that his anger is justified.” A confused murmur passes through the crowd before he continues, “My anger is justified as well, seeing as I am the victim of the assault, but I do not fault the people of the NPM in their fear of me. I know that I am not entirely human, despite being raised to think that I was. I know that you all have been hurt by the Oni, and numerous groups before that weren’t human.”
The noise of the crowd rises as they begin to shout questions at the ninja, but he raises a hand and continues to speak, “I understand your fear because I faced them, too.” His voice holds nothing but sympathy. He faces the anger and confusion of those who try to harm him with compassion, “We all faced our fears and risked our lives when we worked to protect humanity from threats many of you weren’t even aware of at the time. And…”
Cole sighs and lowers himself to rest against the podium on his elbows, “Can I speak for a second?” His softer tone catches the attention of the reporters, who are always hungry for a heartfelt story, “Not as the Black Ninja- or the master of earth, but as Cole. As a kid in his twenties and not the fighter you all see on the news.” The only sound for a moment is the shutter of cameras and quiet murmurs of civilians in the crowd.
“I’m scared. For me, yes, but mostly for what it means for the people close to me.” Cole brushes hair out of his face, “If this,” he gestures to his injuries, “is what happens to me, how am I supposed to feel about Zane, the White Ninja? So many people have tried to scrap him, and with Ninjago’s history with nindroids, I don’t know how he and Pixal have managed to deal with this much scrutiny all these years.” He allows a moment for the words to settle in the crowd’s minds, “And there’s the people who used to be our enemies but then became our friends, like the Serpentine or Unagami, or- heck, Lloyd used to terrorize villages for candy, if you can believe it.” He shoots his friend, who has his face buried in his hands to hide his embarrassment, and smiles while the crowd chuckles along with him.
Cole straightens and stands tall once more, “And this isn’t the first group that’s targeted us specifically, but it sure is the first to come after us for something other than revenge or for the fact that we simply get in the way of their plans.” He lets go of a breath before steeling himself. He delivers the conclusion of the conference’s opening speech with the determination and resolve of a leader:
“Each of the ninja has a reason to fight. Mine is the promise I made to someone very close to me, that I will always stand up to those who are cruel and unjust, and I don’t plan on letting anyone stop me.”
The mood has changed from somber to something more uplifting, and the crowd has long since picked up on it. Reporters holding notepads furiously scribble down notes as Cole drags Lloyd back to the podium and gives his closing statement, “No matter what happens, no matter what people think of us or how much backlash we receive from groups like the NPM, as long as we have fight left in us, I promise that the ninja will remain as Ninjago’s protectors now and forevermore!”
The crowd claps and hoots as Lloyd leans forward into the mic. Not even he is saved from Cole’s enthusiasm, going by his short laugh, “Alright- okay! Calm down guys, we’ll be taking questions now! You, in the blue hat!”]

In a foolish attempt to escape their cells in Kryptarian prison, members of the biker gang, the Sons of Garmadon staged a breakout around three in the morning today that was led by two of Emperor Garmadon’s close admirals in his short rule over ninjago. Many, if not all of the gang’s members participated in causing chaos in the prison yard, allowing for the two high-ranking members to escape onto the main road, where they overtook a police vehicle and attempted to drive into the Sea of Sands.

Luckily, two of the ninja appeared on the scene. Kai Smith, the Red ninja, took charge in assisting the police with the still-ongoing riot inside the prison. With his help, no one was seriously injured, apart from a broken nose and wrist on the ninja’s part.
Cole Brookstone, the Black ninja, went after the escaping members of the gang after dropping his teammate off at the prison on his bike.
“We had to be tactical about this.” Said Kai in a later interview outside the prison, “The Sons are tricky. My fire makes me better at handling crowds, while Cole had his bike to chase them. Plus, y’know, Sea of Sands- he’s the master of Earth. We probably should have called for backup, but I found it ironic for them to get a taste of their own medicine, with the whole Oni mask thing. I just wish I could have been there to punch one of them in the eye myself.”
The chase ended just before the prisoners reached the Scattered Canyon, where it is assumed they hoped to lose their pursuers among the rocky outcroppings. When the police managed to catch up to them, the Black ninja had already subdued the Sons of Garmadon by burying them up to their necks in the sand, and was nursing an injured ankle.
“I have to give it to them- if they had brought any more of their gang, I would have been toast,” commented Cole, “They don’t call Ultra Violet crazy for nothing!”
Luckily, it looked like Kai got his wish in a way, judging by the massive black eye Killow was sporting!
