Chapter 1: The First Steps towards and Unlikely Future

Chapter Text

Izuku walked away from the store, his mind drifting as he followed the beaten path through the forest that led to the UA dorms. He had been sent by himself to pick up some last minute supplies for movie night, and now, he was just hoping that they waited to play his favorite movie when he got back.

The sun faded into the horizon as he heard movement coming from the trees above him. He set the grocery bag down, quickly lowering himself into a fighting stance as he analyzed the trees surrounding him.

A loud shot startled him from his analysis as he looked for the source of the noise. He felt a pinch in his neck, and as he reached his hand up, his fingers snagged on the small dart that had embedded itself into his skin.

He ripped it out, but seconds later he fell to the ground, fighting sleep as a hand gripped his arm. “Don’t worry little hero. The boss just wants you out of the way, so we’re going to send you back before you were born.”

Izuku swears he heard the man say something else, but he couldn’t fight the sleep overtaking his body as he went limp, and the man released his arm.

Izuku woke up with a start, feeling the sun on his head, frowning as he saw where he had slept. He looked around, relieved to find his wallet and phone still in his pocket, yet the grocery bag was missingil. A quick check around the forest told him that he was in the same location as where he’d been jumped, but something felt off as he moved towards where he knew UA was.

He smiled as he saw the familiar UA building in the distance. Other students seemed to be walking onto campus to start their classes for the morning, and Izuku frowned, pausing behind a tree near the edge of the forest.

“Since when do students arrive on campus everyday like this? We haven’t had to walk onto campus since the dorms were built.” Izuku whispered to himself, watching as students continued to pour into the campus.

“Who are you talking to?” A bored voice spoke up behind Izuku, causing him to jump and look back at it’s source.

Izuku nearly had to do a double take as he took in the person in front of him. His dark hair was cut short, and his eye bags weren’t nearly as pronounced, but Izuku could recognize the bored expression on Aizawa-sensei’s face, even if it was on a teenager.

“Well? Are you just going to stare at me, or are you going to answer my question?” Izuku blinked, realizing that he had just been staring at the other boy.

“S-Sorry! I uhhh, I was just talking to myself…”

The other boy raised an eyebrow, but nodded a bit. “And, why are you just standing here watching everyone? Are you a new student or something?”

“I umm, I am a student, kinda…”

“What do you mean, ‘kinda’? Do you have your student ID on you?”

“Oh! Yeah, I do!” Izuku grabbed his wallet, pulling out his student ID to show Aizawa, barely noticing the other ID fall to the ground. The black haired teen picked up the fallen ID, looking it over along with the UA ID as his eyes grew wider.

“Izuku Midoriya… You’re a first year? How do you already have your provisional license? Wait… Why does it say ‘Issued in 2445’ on your IDs? That’s not for another 15 years…”

Izuku’s eyes widen and he goes to grab the IDs back, sighing softly as Aizawa dodges. “They’re not fake, if that’s what you’re wondering. I uhhh, I think I just got sent back in time…”

“Seriously? Do you really expect me to believe that? How stupid do you think I-“

“Your name is Shouta Aizawa.” Izuku cut him off, watching his reaction before he continued. “Your quirk is Erasure. It’s activated by staring at someone without blinking, but it gives you dry-eye if you overuse it. You wear goggles to keep your eyes protected during fights, and you use a capture scarf to aid in your fighting technique. Some think it’s because you’re weak, but I know it’s just an assist when you can’t use your quirk to affect your opponents, like with those who have mutation quirks. I’m not entirely sure how your capture scarf works, but my theory is that whenever you use Erasure, there’s an excess of energy and that is stored into the capture scarf, which is interwoven with your dna to make it respond to your movements as if it was an extra set of limbs. The extra energy is also what causes your hair to stand on end when you use your quirk. You started out as a gen-ed student, but you moved up to the hero course after your first sports festival. And I know you’re not stupid, because you’re the one who’s been teaching me since I started at UA.”

Shouta was, surprisingly, keeping his cool throughout Izuku’s entire explanation, waiting for the other teen to finish before he nodded. “Come on. You need to talk to Principal Nezu.” Shouta grabbed Izuku’s wrist, dragging the other boy onto campus, ignoring the looks he got from the few stragglers that hadn’t gotten to their classrooms yet.

Izuku followed, slightly surprised when the gates didn’t stop him from entering campus, but he was too distracted by the fact that Shouta was basically dragging him to Nezu’s office. By the time they got there, the door swung open and Shouta walked in, still gripping Izuku’s wrist.

“Ah, Aizawa-kun, I see you’ve brought a friend! And who might you be?”

“Me? Umm, I’m Izuku Midoriya.”

“He’s here from the future, Principal Nezu. He knew things about me that not even Yamada knows… That, and he’s got a first year student ID and a Provisional License that are dated in 2445.” Shouta drops the IDs on Nezu’s desk.

Nezu looked over the two cards, smiling. “How interesting! If you don’t mind my asking, what is your quirk, Midoriya-kun?”

“My quirk? I uhhh…” Izuku thought for a minute, knowing it was important for Nezu to know the truth, but unsure how much he should share. “Do uhhh, do you know All Might?”

Nezu blinked before smiling even wider. “Indeed I do! What is your favorite number, Midoriya-kun?”

“My favorite number? I-I’d have to say n-nine, but my Nana was always p-partial to seven…”

Aizawa watched the strange exchange, confused. “What the hell is going on? Principal Nezu, you asked about his quirk and now you’re talking about your favorite numbers?”

“Indeed. And with that small exchange, I know everything I need to know about Midoriya-kun’s quirk. Not to worry, Aizawa-kun. I am sure that when the time is right, you will know all you need to about Midoriya-kun’s quirk. In the meantime, all you need to know is that it is a energy augmentation quirk that will enable him to be faster and stronger than most other students. Does that sound correct, Midoriya-kun?”

“Yes Principal Nezu.”

“Perfect! With that out of the way, let’s discuss our next steps. Now, we aren’t sure how long Midoriya-kun will be here in his past. But, we need to take steps to ensure he does not run into himself.”

“Well, that will be kinda easy for now… I’m not born until July 15th of 2430.”

“Alright, that will give us 3 months to create a new identity for you, Midoriya-kun.”

Aizawa held up his hand, “Wait, a new identity? Principal Nezu, he traveled back from the future… Isn’t he supposed to go into HPSC Custody? So he doesn’t change the future?”

Nezu smiled, turning to look back at Aizawa. “On the contrary, Aizawa-kun, he needs to live his life to the fullest. The HPSC is horrifically behind on their protocol for handling time travelers, so if he were to go into their custody, he would likely be locked away for the foreseeable future. Midoriya-kun cannot change events that were always meant to happen, because time is not an open system. Rather, it is a closed system that cannot be altered by any force, whether internal or external. Now, Midoriya-kun, I would like you to think back on your time as a student, before you were sent back in time. Was there anyone who seemed odd, or out of place? I imagine I would have brought you on as a teacher, assuming you weren’t sent back before you made a full loop. Having someone with knowledge of the future, however temporary, on staff would be an invaluable asset.”

Izuku nodded, thinking back to his first year as a student, trying to remember if anyone seemed out of place. “There was one. The heroics teacher. He… He reminded me of my dad, but he had black hair and black eyes, and he never told us his actual name. Only his hero title, and even then, none of us had ever even heard of him. He said he was really deep underground, but he also talked about working with Eraserhead and Present Mic… Which always confused me. If he’s underground, I can understand working with Eraserhead, since he’s underground, but Present Mic is a spotlight hero, so working with him would draw him into the spotlight, and then he would…” Izuku trailed off as he realized Nezu and Aizawa were staring at him. “S-Sorry… I have a tendency to mutter a lot…”

Nezu nodded. “Not a problem. That can be an indication of a bright mind, you know. Too many thoughts to keep them all inside. In any case, Midoriya-kun, I think we may have found you in the future. Do you know what your hero name will be then?”

“Red Bolt. My hero name will be Red Bolt.”

Nezu nodded and began typing into his computer, pulling up the documents he would need. “Alright. We will need another name to call you here at school as well, Midoriya-kun. And we will also need to arrange your living quarters.”

“He could stay with me.”

Izuku and Nezu turned to Aizawa, both slightly surprised.

“What? By his description, he could probably pass for my brother later on… We could claim to be fraternal twins and say that the information about him being my brother only recently came to light. I’m living on my own, and I have an extra room, so it makes sense. The only people who would question it would be Yamada, Kayama, and Shirakumo.”

“Oh my gosh! That makes so much sense, Aizawa-sen-… Aizawa-san.”

Aizawa rolled his eyes a bit, sighing, “Just… Call me Shouta. If we’re going to pretend to be brothers, we may as well act like it.”

“Oh! Well then, you can call me Izuku. If I'm changing my last name, I don’t really need to change my first name, do I?”

“I don’t see any reason to. I’ll set up the paperwork and create the legal documents needed to enroll you here at UA. These should be prepared enough for you to start after the weekend. Aizawa-kun, why don’t you take Izuku to your apartment and help him get settled in over the weekend.” Nezu reached into his desk drawer and pulled out a card. “This will have plenty of money to cover groceries, furniture, and whatever else you may want, Izuku-kun. It is reloaded each month, as an allowance for students who are wards of UA, like Shouta-kun here is. He can tell you more about it, and get you set up with the online account tracking, but you each get your own card for your own purchases. Now, I’ll contact Shouta-kun when we’re sending someone over to alter your appearance, as well as when we’re ready for you to start attending UA. We’ll get a new school ID and uniform sent over for you. You will need to retake the provisional exam in order to gain a timeline accurate license.”

“Okay, Thank you Principal Nezu.”
“Thank you Principal Nezu.”

Both boys stood, Shouta leading them out of the office and back towards the front of the building.

“So, Izuku… Am I really a teacher in the future?”

“You are the best teacher. You always keep me and my classmates safe, and make sure we have room to grow as students, and as heroes. I don’t know if I’d have kept trying to be a hero if it wasn’t for you and All Might.”

Shouta nodded, “Speaking of… What was the whole deal with you mentioning All Might when Nezu asked about your quirk? Does he have something to do with your quirk? I get if you don’t want to talk about it or anything, I’m just sorta curious…”

“Oh, well, that’s a bit of a long story… I’ll tell you about it when we get back to your apartment… It’s uhhh… not something that should be discussed where anyone could overhear.”

“Fair enough. Is there anything you want to know about me? I can’t imagine being a very open teacher, so you probably don’t know much about me…”

“You’d be right about that, Ai-Shouta. But most of the questions I had for you will probably be answered with time. A lot of it was about your relationships and your quirk. But I guess I do have one question… I recognized Yamada and Kayama when you mentioned them… They both teach at UA when I start as well, but I didn’t recognize the name Shirakumo… Who are they?”

“Shirakumo is one of my closest friends… He has been since just after I started in the hero course.”

“Interesting that I never heard about him… I guess he just wasn’t someone you wanted to talk about much.”

“I guess so…”
