“Bolt the door.”

Jamie let out an undignified yelp as his wife dragged him into the bedroom. Her eyes were fierce and warm, as she pushed him up against the closed door.

“What?”

“Bolt. The. Door.”

Unsure what was going on but unwilling to cross his wife when she was like this, he did as she asked and turned the key.

“Sassenach, what’s got into you? It’s the middle of the afternoon,” he said, voice low.

Claire smiled widely, her wild curls framing her face as she leaned in close.

“I have something for you,” she whispered in his ear.

The feel of her breath on his neck made his blood head south immediately. Before he could do anything though, he heard a rush of footsteps outside the door. Praying for them to pass by, he held his breath a moment, but it was to no avail.

“Mam! Da!”

There was no hope; they’d been discovered and it was now only a matter of time.

“Quickly,” Claire said. “Take it.”

She handed him something.

“Maaam! Daaa!”

The voice called out again.

“Sassenach, what the devil?” he hissed.

“Quickly, before we have to leave,” she repeated, frantically fiddling with her own object. “We were out at the shops and I managed to get it past her, but when I was putting things away in the kitchen she was helping and she found it. I managed to distract her, but I don’t think it’s going to work for much longer.”

Jamie looked down at what his wife had handed to hand him and nodded in understanding. In his hand, lay the one joy in his life he refused to share with anyone, even his wife: Cadbury’s Dairy Milk.

“Maaaam! Daaaaa!”

There was now a pounding on the door to accompany the ever more plaintive calling, growing louder the longer it lasted. Jamie looked back up at his wife.

“Thank ye, Sassenach.”

Quickly, he unwrapped the small bar and shoved half of it in his mouth. He grinned as he saw his wife do the same with her own bar. A few moments later, the mouthful was gone and he put the rest of his and Claire’s bars in the top drawer of the dresser.

“Maaaam!”

“Let’s go face the beast,” he said and Claire nodded, still frantically chewing.

Jamie unlocked the bedroom door and carefully opened it to reveal a small child with a head of riotous red curls. Her face was red with exertion.

“Daaaaa!”

“Hello, a nighean, what’s got you so worked up then?” he said, picking up the small child and holding her in his arms.

“Mam ‘n Da hidey-seek,” she said.

“That’s right, just a little game of hide and seek, Bree,” said Claire, peering at her over Jamie’s shoulder. “And you found us!”

“Clever girl,” said Jamie.

Bree looked up at her father’s face and gasped, offence showing on her face clear as day. One small finger came up and poked him in the mouth.

“Da! Bree too!”

Jamie laughed.

“What is it ye want, lass?”

“Chock-it. Bree chock-it too!”
