Chapter 2

Summary:

“You sound like a rabid steroid induced dog…” Kim Dokja huffs, pushing at his chest when he wanted to squeeze it instead. “You were cuter as my Puppy.”

“I am not a puppy,” Yoo Joonghyuk frowns, ducking down to nose at Kim Dokja’s neck. “Kim Dokja. Live with me.”

Kim Dokja, who has no self-preservation instincts, agrees without hesitation.

Chapter Text

Despite Yoo Joonghyuk’s previous protests of transforming in front of a mere human, he shows Kim Dokja his true form after their reunion when Uriel and Han Sooyoung left. He cages Kim Dokja in by the wall, his firm arms blocking his way, preventing his escape as if the werewolf couldn’t outrun him easily. The human swallows, clutching his phone close to his chest as if it was a shield.

Being this close to the protagonist, Kim Dokja resists the urge to touch him. The Puppy he held in a bundle of his clothing when he was young had matured into a fully grown man who looked like he was sculpted by the gods. He looked like he could manhandle Kim Dokja with ease.

Yoo Joonghyuk’s frown seemed permanently etched on his face, and Kim Dokja found that sexy. Is this bestiality? Am I a monsterfucker? Kim Dokja muses. There were no illustrations for the novel, since it was a novel that only had a reader. He often had to imagine what the characters looked like, but Yoo Joonghyuk… looked unreal.

When Kim Dokja tries to duck under his arms to escape both the man of his dreams and his thoughts, Yoo Joonghyuk growls.

1.

There are several times when Kim Dokja finds Yoo Joonghyuk, the gigantic werewolf that grunts and growls at everything that moves, cute. He would never admit it to it, but the party has seen Kim Dokja clenching and unclenching his fists, trying not to pet Yoo Joonghyuk (more than he already does) which means it must have been as clear as day.

Kim Dokja bites at his nails until Yoo Joonghyuk smacks his hand away from his mouth.

“Focus,” Yoo Joonghyuk gruffs out. He chops away at the onions at extreme speed. Kim Dokja was worried the first time he saw this weird (and handsome) human with furry ears and a tail in the kitchen, wondering if he would burn down the entire place.

As a human, he had different… tastes from the pack, so Yoo Joonghyuk took it upon himself to make food that could feed an entire family. Kim Dokja continues spacing out, out of spite, and Yoo Joonghyuk’s tail that was curled around his waist leaves, leaving that part of his body strangely bereft, now cold and lonely. Huh. Strange. “Get out.”

“Wait what? I didn’t do anything!” Kim Dokja huffs and shoves at Yoo Joonghyuk’s shoulder as if a mere human could even lay a finger on him. “I want to see how you prepare my food, what if you poisoned me, huh?”

“Kim Dokja. You have been eating my food for a month.” Yoo Joonghyuk sighs, closing his eyes and setting the knife aside.

“Maybe it’s the slow kind of poison. It will slowly eat away at my insides until-“

“Kim Dokja. I am a werewolf, not a witch,” Yoo Joonghyuk pinches the bridge of his nose exasperatedly, but Kim Dokja only smiles cheekily, having successfully gotten on the werewolf’s nerves once again. How did the sweet human boy who saved him turn out to be like this? Yoo Joonghyuk murmured under his breath and Kim Dokja snorts. “Leave. I will bring you your food.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.” Kim Dokja bows mockingly, ducking out of the way when Yoo Joonghyuk reaches out to choke him. For some reason, he has a weird obsession with his neck which made it difficult for him to cover up on the way to work.

Yes. He was living in a werewolf den but was still stuck at a corporate job. Life wasn’t all rainbows and sunshine.

After sitting at the dining table for some time, Yoo Joonghyuk starts setting the table like the housewife that he is. Kim Dokja gives in and pets him when he is done, as a treat, “Good boy.”

Surprisingly, Yoo Joonghyuk never resists his pets, even in front of the party. He leans into the touch and closes his eyes, which in Yoo Joonghyuk’s language translated to “I am a very good boy deserving of all the pats in the world”. Kim Dokja feels like he has an overgrown pet dog but given that he’s the only human living among a pack of werewolves, perhaps he was the pet here.

“Thank you, Joonghyuk-ah,” Kim Dokja digs in and as usual, Yoo Joonghyuk simply stares at him with his head tilted like an actual dog, waiting for his comments. “Your cooking tastes amazing as usual.”

“Mn.” Yoo Joonghyuk replies lazily, his gaze darkening as Kim Dokja feasts like a king. Kim Dokja thinks it’s adorable that the werewolf is so eager to keep him full, wondering how he can repay Yoo Joonghyuk for his amazing hospitality.

Sometimes, Kim Dokja wonders why he likes the werewolf so much when all the guy does is insult him.

Huffing, he bends over with his hands on his knees as he pants, “Why do you need to train with a sword when you are a freaking werewolf?”

“It’s a good workout,” Yoo Joonghyuk wipes his sweat with the hem of his shirt. Usually he trains shirtless, but for the sake of Kim Dokja’s virgin eyes, he had refrained from doing so. “Your stamina is terrible.”

“I’m an office worker??????” Kim Dokja’s face was red with exertion as his sword falls on the ground, long forgotten, “I’m a human being???”

“So? I’ve seen humans in better shape and form,” Yoo Joonghyuk looks at him from head to toe, and Kim Dokja feels exposed.

“You bastard…” Kim Dokja tackles him and Yoo Joonghyuk sighs before pretending to fall on his back like he does with Yoo Mia pretending to “defeat” the big bad werewolf. Straddling him, he wears a triumphant smirk as if Yoo Joonghyuk didn’t just slowly get on his back in front of him with a straight face.

“I have finally defeated my Puppy,” Kim Dokja announces with a fist in the air and Yoo Joonghyuk nods solemnly. The former ends up lying down on his werewolf in the middle of the forest and using him as a pillow. They stay there in silence for a while.

The fact that Yoo Joonghyuk plays along with his antics makes his heart warm. It’s adorable, in a way.

3.

“Yah, Joonghyuk-ah,” Kim Dokja whines, sleeping mask over his eyes as someone forces their way into his bed and under his blankets. “’m trying to sleep…”

“Then sleep.” Yoo Joonghyuk wraps an arm around Kim Dokja’s stomach, his firm chest pressed against Kim Dokja’s back.

“You aren’t a puppy anymore…” Kim Dokja places his smaller hand on Yoo Joonghyuk’s, relishing in the touch. He’s touch starved, but he won’t admit it. He has never had someone so eager to touch him (in a non-bullying way), “We can’t snuggle like before anymore, it’s inappropriate…”

“Says who.” Yoo Joonghyuk deadpans. Kim Dokja points to himself with a pout. “You are thinking too much. Fool.”

“Do you have any friends who are fully grown men, who cuddle in the same bed regularly?” Kim Dokja asks with a shit-eating grin. “Platonically?”

“I do not have friends,” Yoo Joonghyuk mentions. Then as an afterthought, “I am not a man. I am a werewolf.”

Kim Dokja is speechless, his mouth wide open.

He regains his bearings quickly, especially when it comes to Yoo Joonghyuk, “Who am I then? Uriel? Hyunsung? Heewon?”

“They are my companions.” Yoo Joonghyuk announces with a straight face. Kim Dokja’s eye twitches.

“How about me…?” Kim Dokja prods, elbowing Yoo Joonghyuk repeatedly. The latter gets annoyed and eventually pins his arm down with his own.

“My human,” Yoo Joonghyuk nods after his grand declaration. Somehow, the fiery passion seeps into his tone of voice. Kim Dokja trembles at the imagery of Yoo Joonghyuk deciding he has had enough of Kim Dokja’s teasing, dumping his body in the middle of N’Gai Forest for other werewolves to feast on.

His human to kill when he was done fattening him up…? Kim Dokja shudders, but when Yoo Joonghyuk snuggles closer to kiss his bare shoulder gently, he thinks that it’s all worth it for this adorable man who brought meaning to his life. If he wants to end his life, then so be it.

4.

“He… He’s going to be okay, right?” Kim Dokja swallows around the lump in his throat as Lee Seolhwa, Yoo Joonghyuk’s ex (according to the novel), was summoned. He refuses to admit that he’s bitter, because he’s absolutely not in love with that idiot who got himself hurt while on a hunt. He must have bit off more than he could chew.

Also, looking at Lee Seolhwa, Yoo Joonghyuk deserves better than a mere human like him. The werewolf said it himself, that he has seen humans in better shape. Someone who could keep up with his… werewolf activities…? Shaking his head to clear his thoughts, he leans over the unconscious Yoo Joonghyuk.

“Joonghyuk-ah,” Kim Dokja prods at his firm cheek. Usually, it’s his werewolf caring for him. Now that the roles are reversed, it is unnerving. “Wake up soon, okay?”

“He’s an idiot,” Han Sooyoung barges in, causing Kim Dokja to jump before cursing her under his breath. She ignores him and confesses, “He told me he wanted to get the biggest prey ever just to impress you. Imagine him dropping it by your feet like a domesticated housecat.”

“I don’t believe you,” Kim Dokja squawks. Was this some weird courting ritual?

“It’s true. I cornered him at 3 AM and asked him why he was leaving the house so early,” Han Sooyoung nods, snickering. “Otherwise, I would have told you all about his ugly past acting like a lover who lost his wife.”

“Ugly past…?” Kim Dokja rubs circles into Yoo Joonghyuk’s hand with his thumb. “I don’t care about all that…”

“I know. But it’s funny to threaten him with that,” Han Sooyoung has a sharp, piercing laugh that makes Kim Dokja wince. “…That idiot likes you, y’know.”

“…Really?” Kim Dokja perks up, eyes wide.

“You are telling me you didn’t realise how different he acts when with you compared to the others…?” Han Sooyoung walks over just to slap the back of his head. Kim Dokja whines, rubbing his head as Han Sooyoung continues, “You two really are a match made in heaven. You are both idiots.”

“Hey!” Kim Dokja huffs, turning back to Yoo Joonghyuk. After a moment of hesitation, “I… really like him too.”

“Good. Then one of you better confess soon, Uriel and I have placed bets. Even Heewon and Jihye took part.”

“I… I’ll try?” Kim Dokja sighs, moving to cup Yoo Joonghyuk’s face, stroking his (sharp!) cheekbones, “If he mauls me to death, I’ll haunt you in the afterlife.”

As Han Sooyoung opens her mouth to answer, Yoo Joonghyuk leans into his touch (like always), mumbling the words “Kim Dokja” with a small, almost unnoticeable smile. It’s so adorable Kim Dokja spontaneously combusts.

Han Sooyoung has “I told you so” written on every corner of her face as she leans back on her chair with a haughty smirk.

5.

Kim Dokja ends up asking for advice on how to woo the leader of the pack. It’s embarrassing, but it’s better than embarrassing himself in front of Yoo Joonghyuk, out of all people.

“Listen, you practically raised him-“

“I only cared for him for a few months!”

“Just say, ‘I love you’, kiss him, and you are done.”

“You suck at romance.”

Kim Dokja was never going to ask for romance advice from Han Sooyoung ever again. Not that he has the chance to, since after his confession, Yoo Joonghyuk would probably dump his dead body in the Han River.

“You could catch a large sheep for Master!”

“…And how would I do that?”

Lee Jihye sizes him up with her eyes, fingers on her chin as she nods.

“Yeah… you are too skinny to catch anything. In fact, you might end up dying which is the opposite of what Master wants.”

“That’s not what I meant…”

Kim Dokja wants to die. Kill him right now. Please. How is confessing so difficult?

“You want to woo Joonghyuk-ah?” Uriel’s eyes shone as bright as the stars in the sky. Kim Dokja was starting to regret asking her after remembering her announcement a day after they reunited, saying she was the number one Joongdok shipper. “I think he’ll like anything you do for him, as long as it’s you. So why not…”

She leans in with a mischievous glint in her eyes. Kim Dokja starts sweating profusely.

“We put you in a Chinese dress with a garter belt, tie you up with a ribbon, put you in a coffin and send you straight to his room!”

“Why do I need to be in a coffin…? What’s with the weird outfit too…”

“We only have coffins here for our vampire neighbours, no Kim Dokja-shaped boxes, sadly.”

In the end, even Kim Dokja’s plans are thwarted. Yoo Joonghyuk beats him to it after driving all his companions out of the den with a single look.

“Kim Dokja,” Yoo Joonghyuk looks healthy, which makes sense considering the werewolf has always been a health freak. The few months with past him must have been hell for the werewolf. Lee Seolhwa patched him up well, better than anything Kim Dokja has ever done for the man in front of him when he was a child. “I heard you stayed by my bedside for three days straight.”

“Huh? No… whoever said that was lying,” Kim Dokja chuckles, waving a hand in the air dismissively before trying to leave. His wrist was caught in a firm grip.

“Why are you avoiding me then,” Kim Dokja tugs at the firm yet gentle hold. How could he say that he was avoiding Yoo Joonghyuk because he was spending all his time asking his companions how to woo him?! “Answer me.”

“Demanding,” Kim Dokja mumbles without making eye contact, “I… I didn’t want to see you.”

“Liar,” Yoo Joonghyuk leans in, his lips dangerously close to Kim Dokja’s. His palms start to sweat. “Be honest with me.”

After a moment of silence, Yoo Joonghyuk speaks up again. It’s rare that he’s this chatty, but Kim Dokja doesn’t mind listening to his deep voice like it’s a podcast.

“I like you. No, I love you. Ever since you picked me up in that alleyway,” Yoo Joonghyuk raises Kim Dokja’s hand in his grip and kisses the back of it. “I realised that you were the only one for me then.”

“You literally scratched and bit me multiple times the first time we met,” Kim Dokja gaped, because what do you mean he was the only one for him?! What about Lee Seolhwa?!

“I was… not thinking clearly before,” Yoo Joonghyuk coughs, his ears turning red. “Stop thinking so much, you fool.”

“Shut up…” Kim Dokja gets on his tiptoes, touching the red ears, awed. “Who would have known you had a cute side?”

“It’s only for you. So stop thinking about my supposed ex,” Yoo Joonghyuk clicks his tongue. Kim Dokja’s protests die down when Yoo Joonghyuk shuts him up with a pointed look, “Han Sooyoung told me all about her novel. We never dated.”

Damned Han Sooyoung, Kim Dokja grits his teeth.

“In my eyes, there is only you,” Yoo Joonghyuk strokes his head, before pressing his lips to his forehead, lingering for a second. “I love you, Kim Dokja, my human.”

A moment of silence for Kim Dokja’s poor heart that was beating so fast it felt like it would crawl out of his throat and go ‘splat!’ on the ground. After how adorable Yoo Joonghyuk has been, how could Kim Dokja reject him? Kim Dokja couldn’t even bring himself to be mad about the fact that he didn’t get to confess first.

With his heart bursting at the seams, he jumps into Yoo Joonghyuk’s embrace, teary-eyed, “I love you too, Joonghyuk-ie.”

-

Extra:

“You are telling me, you got together with Yoo Joonghyuk because… he was adorable?” Han Sooyoung gapes, throwing a tantrum like a five year old. “The leader of our pack? The one who could kill all of us in the room easily? The man who glares at everyone and never speaks like an emotionally constipated caveman? The one who still needs to be muzzled when out in public spaces because he might accidentally lash out and bite someone?”

“Um, yeah?” Kim Dokja, sat on Yoo Joonghyuk’s lap, nodded his head slowly. “He could be a 33-year-old, unemployed terrorist and I would still love him.”

Yoo Joonghyuk tightens his grip on Kim Dokja’s waist, hiding his smile in the nape of Kim Dokja’s neck.
