Chapter 1: Chapter 1

Chapter Text

A year after defeating the collector and fixing the portal door, things were relatively quiet at the owl house. Luz had come to stay for the summer and between classes at hexide, Eda continuing her random ventures, and Raine coming around a lot more than they or Eda admitted was out of the ordinary, everything was more or less- normal!

So when Eda woke Luz and King in the middle of the night saying she was going on an impromptu trip and to watch the house for the next couple of days, Luz was suspicious.

“Can’t you tell us where you’re going?” Luz asked. This was weird.

“...No.” Eda responded, stuffing things into her bag. “So, I’ll be a couple of days, a week at most. Remember to feed Hooty, although I doubt he’ll let you forget-”

“This isn't a trip for another elaborate con is it?” King asked. “Because those don’t really work now that you're even more famous for helping save everyone.”

“Ooooh! Oh my god,” tried Luz, “Are you and Raine going on a romantic vacation??” The two of them had been spending a lot of time together lately… “Who do you think’s gonna pop the question?” Luz whispered to King, who’s tail started wagging excitedly.

“No, no!” Eda sighed. “Okay, if you have to know, I’m actually going to the human realm. I have some unfinished business to take care of there.”

Woah. That was a curveball. Hundreds of questions immediately popped up in Luz’s mind. What business? Was this drama from before or after Luz had shown up in the isles? What would ‘taking care of it’ entail?  Luz opened her mouth to voice the most prominent question when Eda interrupted, looking resigned.

“You’re going to ask to come with me now I’ve said that, aren’t you?”

“Yyyyes…” There was no hiding it.

Eda sighed. “Fine. But King, you have to stay here buddy, we can’t pass you off as a dog like that one time we tried. And HOOTY BETTER NOT THROW ANOTHER HOUSE PARTY WHILE WE’RE OUT!”

“No promises hoot hoot!”

...

Bags were packed, ear covering headband was applied, and the repaired portal was walked through. Luz popped by her house back in Connecticut to say goodbye to her mom and explain about their mystery trip. Eda then asked Camilla for a ride somewhere.  “The airport?” Luz questioned, full to bursting with curiosity at this point.

“How far exactly is this trip?”

“Oh, not that far.” Eda said. “We’re just flying to Oregon.”
