Work Text:

“So let me get this straight,” Jungwon leans further into Sunoo’s space, eyes squinted in confusion. There’s a hint of cream on the corner of his lips from the strawberry cheesecake he just had, and Sunoo decided to wipe it off for him. However, his actions didn't phase Jungwon, and the boy continued interrogating him.

“You’re ignoring Sunghoon-hyung.”

“Yes.”

Their leader sighs, and Sunoo was reminded once again that despite Jungwon being Sunoo’s literal ride or die, he could be quite a menacing leader (if it wasn’t for the fact that he was being stared down at this very moment). Jungwon takes a breather for a second before continuing, eyebrows still furrowed.

“You’re ignoring him because he left you on read?”

Sunoo hates how things always sound worse when they come out of Jungwon’s mouth, but he stands his ground and agrees anyways. He’s petty like that. He plays with the ring on his index finger, twirling it around until his name that was engraved so carefully was in full view.

Yes.

God, hyung, you’re the pettiest person I’ve ever met.”

Jungwon looks at him in disapproval, but doesn’t do anything to stop his friend. Because if there was one thing that Jungwon knew about Sunoo, was that the older boy never did things without reason. And he’d go to the ends of the earth just to defend him if he had to.

“How long are you going to keep this up?”

Sunoo could only shrug in reply.

Relationships are bliss, though sometimes Sunghoon digresses. Because as much as he loves Sunoo, and the fact that he’s so enamoured by the boy – it simply doesn’t change the fact that relationships are a two-way street. It requires two people to make it work, and should operate on constant and good communication.

Which is why Sunghoon was pacing back and forth inside Wonyoung’s dressing room, 10 minutes before they were set to go on air.

“He’s been ignoring you for a week straight and you don’t know why?”

Exasperated, Sunghoon throws his hands up in frustration. “ Yes! And he won’t tell me. All he’s done is raise an eyebrow, and tell me to figure it out myself.” Really, all Sunghoon wanted to do was to cuddle with Sunoo again, and he hasn’t been able to do it since the younger boy started ignoring him.

Wonyoung rolls her eyes at him, careful to not mess up her hair as she stands up and dusts off the baby pink skirt she had on. She had an inkling of why her co-Mc’s boyfriend was ignoring him, but it seems as if Sunghoon was just too dense to figure it out himself. “You know, maybe if you actually back tracked on what you did, it would help you realise it. Because I think the fact that you don’t even know what you did just annoys him even more. Trust me, I’d be annoyed too.”

“But I don’t know! Seriously, I haven’t said anything to him that’ll piss him off, nor have I accidentally thrown away his favourite mint choco snack.”

At this point, Sunghoon was already sulking, and if any outsider were to look at the two of them, it would seem as if Wonyoung was the oldest between the two.

She smiles sympathetically though, patting Sunghoon on the shoulder as she gracefully walks out. “Well, good luck with him, oppa. I can’t help you if you can’t figure out why he’s pissed at you.” Wonyoung winks at him playfully, on the verge of laughing at how ridiculous Sunghoon looked.

Sunghoon wonders if her smile was truly genuine, or if she just wanted to taunt him.

Sunoo misses him. Of course he does, and no matter how petty he was feeling, Sunoo wants to just throw himself into Sunghoon’s embrace. But he can’t, because Sunoo’s particularly petty (and for good reason too!) and doesn’t want to cave in.

Right now, however, all he can do is stare longingly at Sunghoon, and wonder how much longer it would take before the older boy finally figures out why Sunoo was pissed in the first place.

“Hyung, stop staring at him like that.”

Niki playfully flicked Sunoo on the back of his head, rousing the other boy back to his senses. “Sorry. I just want my cuddles right now.” Niki made a gagging noise in response, face ridden with faux disgust. “Then just get it? I don’t know hyung, why don’t you do that instead of staring at him like that?”

“I can’t! I’m meant to be pissed at him!”

The younger of the two scoffs, “still?” Sunoo nodded, fiddling with his fingers. “Why not just talk to him?”

Honestly, Sunoo knew Niki was right. This whole thing could have ended ages ago if he had just talked to Sunghoon in the first place. But for some reason, it really baffled Sunoo how Sunghoon could act so nonchalant about it all after that night, considering Sunoo sat at home worried sick.

“I don’t know, Niki. For me, I can’t believe he can’t figure out why I’m so annoyed.”

At least Niki tried to look sympathetic for a bit, though Sunoo knew that the former just couldn’t understand why he was being like this. Because to him, it’s not really a big deal. And as much as Sunoo wanted to say that it wasn’t a big deal, it was to him.

Why wouldn’t it be, when he literally paced back and forth in their bedroom for hours thinking of the worst?

He just wants Sunghoon to try and see things from his perspective. Maybe then he’ll realise why Sunoo got so upset.

“To be fair though, he did leave you on read for hours. And even missed most of your calls.”

“Exactly my point! And then the dumbass has the audacity to slide into bed with me and cuddle as if nothing happened!”

Sunoo snuck another glance at Sunghoon, turning away immediately when the latter’s eyes were already on him. Instead, he played it off as him simply looking around (Niki had to applaud Sunoo for being able to make the four corners of their dorm seem like the most interesting place out there. Netflix should definitely send him an acting contract). He picked up his phone, switching it on, only to be met with his lockscreen wallpaper. It was still the photo that Sunghoon and he took to match each other on the night they got together.

A pang strikes Sunoo’s heart at that moment, but he ignores it, despite his entire being and soul yearning for Sunghoon.

Sunghoon doesn’t know what to do anymore. He hasn’t spoken to Sunoo for more than a week now, and it’s been taking such a huge toll on him. That morning, Heeseung pointed out the heavy eye bags under his eyes, and Sunghoon knew it’s from the lack of Sunoo’s touch.

He’s gone through everything he’s done that could have annoyed Sunoo, but none of them were enough to get the other upset. Clearly he was missing something, because usually whenever they have an argument, they resolve it pretty quickly. Especially since both of them hated going to bed mad at each other.

Yet this time was different, so Sunghoon knows he really fucked up.

The only issue was the fact that he still doesn’t know what he did wrong.

“Jay, what do I do? Sunoo hasn’t spoken to me at all and I miss him,” Sunghoon babbled like an idiot, head in his hands. Jay pats him on the back, somehow unaware of the inner turmoil his friend was suffering. Though, this really was on Sunghoon, considering even Jay knew the reason why (and personally, if Jay was in Sunoo’s position, he’d be pretty pissed too).

“You still haven’t figured it out?”

“No! I really don’t know anymore, Jay.”

Sunghoon looks as if he’s been through several wars with the way his face looks so sullen and beaten down. It must’ve been taking a huge toll on him, Jay supposed.

Flopping down onto Jay’s bed, Sunghoon groaned, still utterly clueless. “Hoon, I can’t believe you haven’t figured it out. Even I know why he’s mad.” This just makes Sunghoon groan even louder, and he almost started thrashing on the bed if it wasn’t for the pillow that Jay chucked at him.

“Oi, think back to the night you, Jake, and I went out. Then you’ll realise.”

“What?”

Rolling his eyes, Jay repeated his words, “that night. Think about that night again, and tell me, what’s the thing that Sunoo hates the most?”

Before Sunghoon could even let Jay’s words marinate within him, the door to the room burst open. For a split second, Sunghoon thought it was Jake, but he was shocked to find Sunoo standing by the doorway instead. The younger boy doesn’t say a word, and all he does is grab Sunghoon by the wrist and drags him out of the room.

Sunoo leads them to their shared bedroom, letting go of his hand and standing before him with his hands on his hips. Sunghoon gulped nervously, this is it, he’s done for.

His boyfriend looked just as bad as he did; eyes obviously tired and his face lacked the usual bright aura he donned.

“For the record, hyung, I’m still mad at you, okay? But I just can’t take it anymore and I really need your cuddles— or just you to be close to me. I’ll go crazy.”

Sunghoon’s heart flutters at Sunoo’s words, watching as the other turns his head away shyly. They stay quiet as Sunghoon manoeuvres them onto his bed, pushing Sunoo down gently and shifting until Sunoo’s head was comfortably on his chest.

Sunoo sighs in contentment, burying himself deeper into Sunghoon’s chest and curling his arm around his boyfriend’s waist. Somehow, this was enough to calm Sunghoon’s nerves.

“And just so we’re clear, just because I’m mad at you and I’m ignoring you doesn’t make me love you any less. So don’t think that I don’t love you anymore just because I’m being petty.” It’s like all the pent up worries that Sunghoon was mulling over suddenly disappeared, and even though he knows Sunoo is far from forgiving him, he still feels loved.

After all, the past few months that they’ve been together have been the happiest moments of Sunghoon’s life. He never knew love could feel like this, moreso even look like this; with Sunoo’s breath hitting the crook of his shoulder and neck, and the familiar scent of lemongrass and sweetness fills the air.

“I love you too,” Sunghoon whispers, and he plants a soft kiss on the crown of Sunoo’s head. “Whatever it is that I did wrong, I want you to know that I’m sorry. I’m trying my best, baby.”

“I know, hyung. I know.”

“What do you even call that arrangement? That’s like friends with benefits but on a different level.”

“Riki, what the hell are you even trying to say?”

Irritated, Jungwon shoves Niki away from him, the latter laughing heartily at their leader’s look of disapproval. “I have a point! See, Sunoo-hyung is mad at him, but he still uses Sunghoon-hyung to get his cuddle refill or whatever. Like friends with benefits except they’re far from friends.” Niki takes a moment to think, then brightens up.

“Lovers with benefits, I suppose.”

Sunoo dutifully ignores him, motioning for Jake and Heeseung to sit next to him as they enter the cafe. Upon hearing Niki’s words, Heeseung looked at him questioningly, rightfully confused. “Huh?”

“Don’t mind him, hyung.”

Heeseung nods anyway, tugging Jake down. “Is this about Sunoo and Sunghoon?” Jake steals Sunoo’s drink, almost choking when he finds out it was mint choco flavoured. “Aw yuck! It’s mint choco flavoured.” He pushes the drink back towards Sunoo, the latter staring smugly at him.

“This is why you always have to ask Sunoo-hyung what flavour drink he has.” Jungwon still looked unamused, but this time it was because of how Niki kept kicking him under the table. “Yes it is. Because I’m still not talking to him,” Sunoo replied to Jake, sipping on his drink as Jake looked personally offended by the flavour of it. Heeseung swivels his head around, until he was looking at Sunoo eye to eye. “What do you mean still? I literally saw the two of you draped around each other on the living room couch this morning.” His voice was laced with both shock and confusion. Sunoo couldn’t blame him though, considering how messy their current arrangement was.

“Lovers with benefits, I tell you.”

“Shut up, Riki! It doesn’t even make any sense! How are they ‘lovers with benefits’ when the benefits part is what couples do on a normal basis?”

Niki cackled loudly, getting a few heads to turn towards them because of how loud he was. Luckily, the cafe was pretty closed off to the general public, and everyone there were mostly idols. “You’re right. Let’s call it lovers quarrel with a hint of spice instead.” Jungwon could only sigh exasperatedly.

“Basically, hyung,” Sunoo starts, blocking off the little cat fight Jungwon and Niki were having from the corner of his eye. “I’m still mad at him but because neither of us can function without cuddling at least once, we’re allowed to initiate skinship. I’m just not talking to him until he tells me why I’m mad.” Heeseung makes a noise of approval, finding the arrangement quite odd. He doesn’t really want to pry though, it’s not his relationship to dictate after all.

“It’s going to take a while before Sunghoonie figures anything out,” Jake solemnly said, breaking off a chunk of the chocolate chip cookie he had and feeding the piece to Sunoo. “I know. It’s crazy, because if he hadn’t gotten caught by our fans that one time when he set me as his lockscreen, he wouldn’t have confessed to me at all. Even though I’ve been pretty obvious about my crush on him.” Laying his head on the table, Sunoo wonders why he decided to fall in love with perhaps the densest person he knows.

But he wouldn’t have it any other way. Sunghoon may be a little oblivious at times, but he’s honest and sweet, and so, so caring when it comes to Sunoo. And if Sunoo was being a little truthful, his obliviousness sometimes adds some kind of charm (and mainly because Sunoo finds it cute).

“Yeah, seriously, good luck. He’s not going to figure it out unless someone tells him.”

Jungwon decides to chime in, finally having Niki in a headlock to keep the younger boy still. “Apparently Wonyoung’s been telling him to figure it out too. I was talking to her the other day.” Niki squirms underneath Jungwon’s grasp, but their leader is relentless. “Poor Wonyoung. She had to get dragged into this too.”

The doorbell to the cafe chimes as someone walks in, only for it to just be Jay and Sunghoon. As the two of them sat down, all of them watched how Sunghoon wedged himself in between Sunoo and Jake, but neither of them said a single word to each other at all. It’s like Sunoo wasn’t even acknowledging his presence; and the only way they were able to tell that Sunoo was aware Sunghoon was next to him, was from the way he leaned into Sunghoon’s touch.

They continue like that for the rest of the afternoon, not a single word exchanged but still showing a plethora of affection for each other.

Like clockwork, Sunghoon found himself seated on one of the chairs in Wonyoung’s dressing room. She’s used to it by now, patiently awaiting Sunghoon’s words. Though, it seems as if the older boy had something else on his mind.

“What Sunoo hates the most?”

He was deep in his thoughts, completely unaware of Wonyoung’s watchful eyes as she saw him turn the cogs in his brain. “Okay, tell me what’s on your mind?” She drags another chair from across the room and positions it next to Sunghoon, gently probing him for his thoughts. “ A lot.”

“Elaborate.”

Sunghoon takes a deep breath in, prepared for the onslaught of bullshit he was about to spew. Although Sunoo and he were past the ‘ no cuddles because I’m pissed at you’ stage, that doesn't mean that Sunghoon thinks that everything is okay. Because it isn’t, and Sunoo is still not talking to him.

“Jay told me to think back to the night we went out, and to remember what Sunoo hated the most.”

Wonyoung had an idea of how things were going to unfold, considering Jungwon told her how things had been going with those two. And if there was one thing she remembers Sunoo mentioning to her that one time they passed each other in the Mubank hallways, was that she clearly knew what Sunoo hated the most.

“Well, what does he hate, then?” She asks him this knowingly, her mind reeling back to their conversation a few weeks prior.

(“No, really, Wonyoung. It just annoys me a lot when people leave me on read like that, especially when I ask them something important.”)

Sunghoon stares at her, trying to connect the dots in his mind and–

Oh shit.

In a hurry, Sunghoon fished his phone out of his pocket, finding the contact name ‘ddeonu’ and scrolling through their messages. Wonyoung was looking over his shoulder now, raising her eyebrow at him when she saw the countless missed calls Sunghoon had from that one singular night.

“Oh you fucking idiot, 10 missed calls? Seriously?”

Slightly ashamed, Sunghoon’s cheeks turned a light rose, chuckling nervously. “I apologised to him for this one when I realised,” he mumbled, though he could tell that Wonyoung was not convinced. “I swear I did! I’m not that bad.” She just slaps his shoulder playfully in reply, gesturing for him to continue what he was doing.

He scrolled up for a little bit more, until he found the message he was looking for.

sunghoon hyung

are you okay?

hyung

hyung i’m seriously worried now

why aren’t you answering me?

sunghoon hyung are you okay? please tell me you’re okay

Sunghoon really fucked up. In all retrospect, he has no idea why he didn’t scroll up his messages with Sunoo from that night, only noticing the missed call texts that he received. This must be why Sunoo was so upset with him, and suddenly guilt flushed right over him.

Because if there’s anything that Kim Sunoo hated the most, was to be left on read whilst he worries about your safety.

“I need to apologise to him. God, I’m so stupid. How did I not realise?” Sunghoon rubs his hands against his face in frustration, albeit careful not to mess up his makeup (the last thing he’d want that day was to get yelled at by his stylist too). He looked so remorseful, evident that it hurts him to know just how much he caused his boyfriend to worry.

All Wonyoung could do was laugh in disbelief, feeling sorry for both Sunoo and Sunghoon. “How did this even happen?” She waits patiently until Sunghoon gathers his thoughts, the latter spiralling into the abyss of his own mess. “I think I had my phone on ‘do not disturb’ by accident, and at the time Sunoo was texting me, I must have left it on with my messages opened. I didn’t mean to leave him on read, I just never saw the notifications,” he croaked, visibly upset at what he did.

“Apologise to him, and make sure you talk. Things will be okay; you know he loves you, right?”

Nodding, Sunghoon sniffled a little. “See? He loves you, and he’s even told you that even though he was mad at you. It’ll be okay, oppa. Just talk to him.”

He knows Wonyoung was right — Sunoo loves him so much. Yet it still doesn’t stop that nagging feeling on the back of his mind, and Sunghoon prays that things don’t go south from there.

Relationships, just like most things in life, are a two-way street. There’s always going to be that constant push and pull, because things are never going to be easy when a second party is involved. But when you make it work, it’s always worth it.

Sunghoon’s seated at the edge of his bed, waiting for the familiar scent of lemongrass to filter into the room. Earlier that evening, he told Niki and Jungwon to not come into their room, and to give them their privacy, even if it was just for a short while. They complied easily enough, to Sunghoon’s surprise.

It doesn’t take long until the bedroom door creaks open, soft footsteps thumping against their flooring. From a distance, Sunghoon could clearly smell the sweet scent of lemongrass; a little tangy, but so familiar.

Sunoo sits himself right next to Sunghoon, but he doesn’t leave a space between them like the latter thought he would. It eases his racing thoughts for a bit, so he musters the courage to gently grab Sunoo’s hands. The younger boy doesn’t pull away from this either, and instead he lets himself melt into it, finding Sunghoon’s warmth comforting.

“I’m sorry.”

Sunoo stays silent and lets Sunghoon speak, all ears open and his gaze tender. “I’m sorry it took me so long to realise why you got mad at me. Honestly I don’t know why it took me this long,” Sunghoon chokes out, feeling his eyes glaze over and a certain heat pool at the corners. “I didn’t mean to make you worry so much that night. And I’m not going to make excuses for myself either, because I should’ve scrolled up past your missed calls and seen how worried you were.”

“Sunoo, I don’t know how long it’ll take until you speak to me again, but I want you to know that I’ll never make you worry the same way you did that night ever again.”

A sudden weight collapses on top of him, and Sunghoon finds that Sunoo was a blubbering mess in his arms. There’s tears soaking his shirt, and hands clutched tightly at the very front. “You’re so dumb, ” Sunoo mananges to reply, althought it came out muffled from the way he had his face smushed against Sunghoon’s chest. “Of course I was going to worry about you. I’ll worry about you all the time , because you’re my boyfriend .” He wipes the tears off his eyes and cups Sunghoon’s cheeks.

“Did you know how worried I was? The only time I felt somewhat okay was when I called Jay-hyung and asked him how you were doing. I thought something bad happened to you.”

Sunoo looked at him gently, though there was a hint of frustration in his eyes and Sunghoon couldn’t fault him for that. “ Please, don’t ever do that again. I was worried sick when you wouldn’t reply to me or answer my calls.” Sunghoon just pulls him closer, hugging him tightly. “I promise. I’ll try not to be so clueless all the time too.”

The younger boy giggles at this, and then pulls Sunghoon’s face down so he could kiss him on the cheek. “You better not be. Or else the next time I get mad at you, there won’t be any more cuddles for a while.”

“Babe, are you sure you can handle that?”

“Shut up, hyung.”

“Sunghoon-hyung! I told you to act like you’re annoyed at me!”

“Sunshine, you know I physically can’t do that to you, right?”

Sunoo groans in annoyance as he plays back their TikTok video, trying to get Sunghoon to act according to his part. The latter finds it too difficult though, because there’s nothing about Sunoo that annoys him anyways (“You’re disgusting,” Jay tells him, kicking Sunghoon gently on the shin to get his eyes off Sunoo for once that evening). “Okay, okay! I’ll try to. For real, this time.”

Rolling his eyes, Sunoo props the phone up to where he last had it, making sure the timer was set correctly. He can feel Sunghoon staring at him, and he almost shies away from his boyfriend’s gaze. “Stop looking at me like that,” he says, trying to act nonchalant about it. It backfires on him though, because his cheeks were tinged with a carnation pink, though he plays it off as the blush he put on earlier.

“Hyung, just pretend as if we were fighting again.”

“Baby, you were the one that was mad at me. How could I act annoyed?”

Laughing, Sunoo beckons for Sunghoon to take his spot. “You’re right. But just try anyways.”

“If you say so, sunshine.”
